Title: AGS Caerleon
Post by: Palustris on February 13, 2013, 06:00:46 PM
No one seems to have mentioned the AGS Show in Caerleon this weekend (16th. Feb). Hope it is still on as the forecast is for a reasonable day to drive there,

Hope you are correct about the weather, Eric.
It's horrible here at the minute - heavy snowfall in Perthshire and  gales with wet snow here in Aberdeen.
It seems, as with you, that the forecast is better for the weekend - hope they are right - it's no fun shoving a large bus through a drift on the way to Dunblane!
Hope you have a great day.  Bob and Rannveig home from New Zealand so they'll be raring to go, I expect.  :)

Always a worry at this time of year for these early events.

It hasn't even been promoted in the news section on the AGS site, Eric ... let alone on this ... the SRGC ... forum!!!!  ??? ::) :'(

What! You expect the AGS website to be up-to-date with something?
I have watched Weather forecasts on BBC1, 2 ITV, Channel 4 and 5 and they all agreeon nice ish weather for Saturday. Bound to be a hurricane or something."Never known so much unanimity on a subject"
Now place that quote. (If it is correct, it is as close as I can remember).

Original quote was "Never known such unanimity on a point of law" from The Mikado.

Paul & Gill Ranson won the Farrer medal with Dionysia archibaldii.

Dionysia brimstone
Dionysia monika
Iris sindpur
Narcissus asturiensis

I didn't take any pictures of the coffee cake, it was very plain with no walnuts or icing this year.

There seemed to be fewer big plants that could be in the running for the Farrer, but generally the benches were well filled.

Jon Evans had a breath taking display of his work. He must have spent many hours doing composite images.

Jim McGregor got a certificate of merit for Crocus etruscus

The Galanthus goblet was won by a potful of plicatus Sophie North

Dionysia clarissa
Galanthus maidwell
Pleione humilis

Hopefully that gives a flavour of the show.

Some cracking plants there - thanks for sharing, Rob.

Isn't the pot of Crocus etruscus lovely? And the Cyclamen, which I thought might be  from Ian Robertson. 8)

And what about those dionysias from the Ransoms? Super!

Heavens I have not even got the camera out of its bag yet.
Agree though the show had fewer entries than some shows do but the standard and variety was as good as ever.
There were some fantastic Hellebore plants on Sale at Heritage Plants. Sadly my pocket money did not run to buying any though. :'(
We went on the The Weir Garden in Hereford on the way home. Thousands of G. nivalis in much splendour. Did not really see any 'specials' though. Mind my back does not allow for getting down to that level these days.
So, Loughborough here we come.

This has taken me ages. I forgot how to do it, such a long time since I made a web page like this. Age thing...............
Please let me know of there are any mistakes. I was getting very frustrated  with it.

Masses of photos showing what a sunny show it was- makes a nice treat for February events.
I think you were just rusty after the winter break, Eric!

A little blip: Primula Arduane  should be Primula Arduaine  :)

Thanks, the problem is also one of eyesight. The Web page making things has small text and I have never found a way of making it bigger.
Have managed to edit and put it right. Thanks once again.
