Today we had a lot of rain, but thanks to the few sunny moments I could take some pics in the garden.
Helleborus lividus, the rare endemic helleborus of the Balearic Islands.
Asphodeline lutea - this orange form flowers always very early.
Iris pamphylica
Narcissus hedraeanthus
Iris persica
-
Lovely Hans, those Iris pamphylica pick up the purplish tones from your rock beautifully.
-
I love the Iris persica Hans. Beautiful.
-
Hans,
lovely images but Asphodeline lutea is realy early. The yellow form is flowering in June with me :o
My hippeastrum 'Naranja' brings some pleasure in the dull winter days

Really exciting plants Hans - I've never seen anything but the yellow form of Asphodeline, and here too it is summer flowering. Amost seems like it might be another species? The iris is absolutely exquisite and amazing to see growing outside like that - must be just the right environment.
-
A few plants flowering today. The Irises, Lady B.S. were planted at the same time, one lot in a bowl kept in the greenhouse and the other planted in the raised bed. They both started flowering at the same time despite rain and gales.
-
For some reason I could not post 5 pictures although less than 1000Mb - last pic. here

I like your Callianthemum Tom, any growing tips?

Beautiful plants Armin, Tom and Zvone!
Thanks for your comments Gail, John, Armin and Tim.
Armin and Tim I agree with you, I also was very surprised when this plants (seedgrown) flowered the first time so early here while the yellow form I grow will flower in a few months.
-
David
Not really. With most of my plants it is benign neglect. After flowering, I put it out in the garden and give it some liquid tomato fertiliser when I remember.
It stays out on the raised bench in its pot all year - including frosts -and I bring it in about early January when I see the buds appear, When the flowers finish, it goes back out. Last year I decided to plant its companion plant out on the raised bed - in front of the Irises in the picture, So far, there is no sign of it, so we will have towait and see if it has survived . Your climate is not dissimilar to mine as far as rainfall goes so this should work for you.
-
Thanks Tom, I'll give one a try.
-
David - I find Callianthemum kernerianum better in the open garden; it is already showing buds up here in the North East last time I looked; I must check to see of the flowers have opened.
I know two of our local growers have regular disagreements as to whether Callianthemum can be lifted for the shows - the Learned professor lifts them every other year, but Alan Furness does not like to lift them.
-
Given my climate, which is WET+++++, I'd be worried with one outside

Have to wait a while for spring here up in the mountains! Been away for a week on holiday at our cabin which sits in the subalpine birch zone at 1000m in S Norway.
We are almost alone here now at this time of the year. Not many animals to see either except a couple of flocks of ptarmigans and some smaller birds. However it is a lot of animal tracks: elk, fox, hare, marten etc.

As a follow on to post 6, here are Kath. H. and Lady B.S flowering today in sunshine.

Some hellebores in my garden this weekend.........
-
More........
Last but not least is 'Anna's Red' bred by Rodney Davey, in fact all the hellebore pictures posted this morning are his hybrids bought from his nursery this weekend, which luckily for me is only 40mins away from my home ;D
Well done Rodney.
Aren't they beautiful?
-
Forgot this beauty..........
-
Very nice hellebores, and your Hamamelis 'Jelena' looks to have a much 'fuller' flower than mine, which has small, thin flowers - maybe mine is just a baby and needs time.

They certainly are, Mike.
'Anna's red' and the last white are super. I like that the flowers all seem to be good and wide. The dark, rather mysterious colours of the ones in your first post are pretty special - this Rodney Davey ( who I hadn't heard of before) obviously knows what he's doing!!

Try the link above Maggi for more info.
I've known Rodney & Lynda for maybe 15 years or more. John Massey (Ashwood) visits their nursery & has taken a lot of interest in Rodney's work.
My reaction when I saw the original plant at the nursery was the same as Anna's.....WOW I've never seen anything like it!!
-
A super article from Anna Pavord- thanks for the link and the "intro" to Rodney Davey , Mike!
Those hellies are speaking loudly to me!
-
Glad about that Maggi...... ;D

Yes, it is, john. I like it a lot too! It's a very lovely Belgian selection, selected by Valentin Wijnen and named for his wife.

I bought a yellow Hellebore from Ashwood about five years ago, partly because I liked the colour but even more because of its outward facing flowers. I am pleased to see this seedling, flowering for the first time this year, has inherited the same characteristics.
-
I love these "hellie" threads!
Super flower colour and shape in your seedling there, Melvyn- and a very pretty portrait of it.
Off now to write 100 lines- imposed by the BD- "I do not have any more room for hellebores"..........
:-X :'(

Lol, Maggi, they can serve as an excellent backdrop for bulbs! ;D ;D

These rather nice seedlings were taken in Ashwoods propagation houses.

Found these fine Eranthis hyemalis in an old orchard near
our meadow garden and wondered why we did not discover
them before.

Wonderful, Rudi. I love those "wild" patches of winter aconite.
-
Surprising you had not found them before, Rudi - a good discovery.
For us such sights are very unusual so exciting to see them .

here I protect the Hellebores at night because its freezing, these are flowering in the greenhouse
-
Wouldn't it be wonderful to work at Ashwood growing all those lovely hellebores?
I would be in my element..............Hellebores, hepatica, galanthus & cyclamen 8)
-
Our Adonis open the flowers today.
-
Maggi and Wim, thank you for the friendly comments and to
Gerrit E.'s link to these fine stand in Belgium.
-
Fabulous adonis Karl!!
How do you grow them?
-
In the garden I grow them on a raised place where the soil is acidic, well drained and in spring there is in full sun, in summer there is half shade. At the same place I grow Trillium, Anemone, Cypripedium, Arisaema and a few other who love that kind of soil and light.
In pots; I grow them in a very well drained peat and have them on a table in a frost-free greenhouse.
-
Our Adonis open the flowers today.
Wonderful plants, Karl! :D
-
What a fascinating story from Anna Pavord about the marbled leaf hellebore and Lynda and Rodney's nursery; I only ever visited once many years ago and was intrigued by all the plants they were growing - a French nurseryman friend (Jean-Pierre Jolivot, Le Jardin d'en Face) named a purple-leaved Sedum for them I think. Great connections between nursery-people and such a wonderful gardening writer.
-
Our Adonis open the flowers today.
Beautifull :o Karl
-
Thank you Gert, Mavers and Wim
Three Adonis from today. All are from my greenhouse, in the garden they is just beginning to bloom.
-
Wonderful, Karl. 'Yamato' has always been one of my favourites!
-
They are so lovely Karl. Have you been importing from Japan?
-
A couple from me
Gymnospermium albertii which never seems to get bigger and a snowdrop
-
I love the casual way you introduce "and a snowdrop" Ian. That is a gorgeous clump. I thought I had lost my Primrose Warburg but it was just late getting out of bed and is only now emerging.

Hi Gail
Glad you liked Primrose. It is still a lovely snowdrop but most seem to be chasing "newer" variants. It's in my top 10 or maybe 5
Yours seems a little late I hope it's OK if not let me know and I can let you have a spare
-
That's very kind Ian but it seems fine, just slow. Ours is a cold garden, we're usually two weeks behind friends in Ipswich.

Hello Ian, I have the same problem with Gymnospermium, alive but not kicking!
Beautifull group of yellow snowdrops.

Beautifull group of yellow snowdrops.
Thanks Gert
It would be nice to hear from anyone who can grow Gymnospermium to any size. Coming from the area it does seem as though it ought to like to be dry in summer and is not to concerned about dry cold in winter.

Great to see the blooms starting in your troughs, Kevin. The first Saxifraga flowers are only just beginning here in Aberdeen. They are cheerful wee plants, aren't they?
-
Nothing wrong with ordinary Kevin, it means you have success! They are coming on nicely, well done.
