Galanthus nivalis 'Grakes Gold' on the cover of  IRG 37 - January 2013

                             [attachimg=1]

A New Year and a new season begins for  the International Rock Gardener E-magazine - I’m sure we all have high hopes for the coming year!

IRG 37 - January 2013

This issue heralds the start of the European Spring Snowdrop Season with news from Valentin Wijnen, who has also provided the cover picture. Valentin will be familiar to many “Galanthophiles” from his talks at Galanthus events in several countries as well as his contributions to the VRV and SRGC Forum pages where  the Snowdrop threads seem very popular!

Taking us ‘out and about’ to the Swedish region of Abisko is Susann Nilsson who shows the natural habitat of many fine plants that are treasured by many of us in our gardens.
Susann is known for her Passion for Pulsatillas.

those yellow galanthus are stunning, but so are the scharlockii types. Does anyone know if sharlockii and its varieties are for sale? and of so where? I imagine they must be quite expensive?

As if the weather weren't bad enough now my want list has just increased by 16 snowdrops.   All lovely but must say I have always had a thing for Melanie S.

They are all lovely indeed John, I particularly like the peppermint striped scharlockii number 4.

The snowdrop article is called " Belgian Snowdrops: discoveries by Valentin Wijnen" - Valentin discovered all of the 'drops pictured in the IRG.

When I went to the Belgian Snowdrop Weekend at Kalmthout Aboretum in 2011. Valentin Wijnen had a sales table.  I don't know if he will be there this year http://www.provant.be/kalender/vrije_tijd/domeinen/arboretum_kalmthout/collecties/hamamelis/2013_02_09_sneeuwklokjesweeken.jsp?module=tcm:7-12959-4&referer=tcm:7-20462-64 (http://www.provant.be/kalender/vrije_tijd/domeinen/arboretum_kalmthout/collecties/hamamelis/2013_02_09_sneeuwklokjesweeken.jsp?module=tcm:7-12959-4&referer=tcm:7-20462-64)

In 2011 he only had a few of his own snowdrops for sale, so if you wanted to make sure of getting hold of a Grakes Gold, or one of the others, it would probably be best to contact him in advance anyway.

In the forum of the VRV you can find, that Valentin will be at Kalmthout this year. But also at The Boschhoeve in Wolfheze, Holland where he will talk about belgian snowdrops. www.boschhoeve.nl (http://www.boschhoeve.nl) I do not know whether he will sell snowdrops at the Boschhoeve. In earlier years he never did.
In Kalmthout there will be two talks:
One by John Grimshaw and the other by Stefan Vidts.
Stefan is a landscape architect and galanthofile.

Lina.
