Title: Yes, I'm so happy, 2013!
Post by: vivienr on January 17, 2013, 09:05:50 PM
Or even....Yes, I'm so happy, July 2014!

Everyone around here is going bonkers after the announcement of the route for the Tour de France Grand Depart in 2014.
Anyone who wants to put their picnic blanket down on Holme Moss had better get there tout de suit (although it is snowing at the moment so you need to be well wrapped up 8) :)

Unfortunately not going through my side of Huddersfield so our potholes won't be fixed.

Three stages in England - how exciting!
We're BIG fans of the Tour .....     Is there any chance the snow will be gone by July, d'you think?

Went to see Paul Carrack in Plymouth last night, what a cracking gig, what a cracking musician and what a cracking voice. Even the nearly 70 year olds were on their feet jigging, singing and clapping at the end. If anyone get a chance to go to a show in your area don't miss it.

I can believe that was a good gig, David. Lucky  the weather hadn't closed in on you and kept you at home - I was surprised to hear you weren't digging your way out of a drift.

I'm having trouble being happy at the mo ...... and it's not just the weather .... I  cannot believe that I fell for all  Lance Armstrong's protestations of innocence all these years - the lying erk!  >:(

This made me chuckle:

This is soooo true.

EATING IN THE UK IN THE FIFTIES

* Pasta had not been invented.
* Curry was an unknown entity.
* Olive oil was kept in the medicine cabinet.
* Spices came from the Middle East where, we believed,
they were used for embalming.
* Herbs were used to make rather dodgy medicine.
* A take-away was a mathematical problem.
* A pizza was something to do with a leaning tower.
* Bananas and oranges only appeared at Christmas time.
* The only vegetables known to us were spuds, peas, carrots and
cabbage; anything else was regarded as being a bit suspect.
* All crisps were plain; the only choice we had was whether to put the
salt on or not.
* Condiments consisted of salt, pepper, vinegar and brown sauce if we
were lucky.
* Soft-drinks were called pop.
* Coke was something that we mixed with coal to make it last longer.
* A Chinese chippy was a foreign carpenter.
* Rice was a milk-pudding, and never, ever part of our dinner.
* A Big Mac was what we wore when it was raining.
* A Pizza Hut was an Italian shed..
* A microwave was something out of a science-fiction movie.
* Brown bread was something only poor people ate.
* Oil was for lubricating your bike, not for cooking; fat was for cooking.
* Bread and jam was a treat.
* Tea was made in a teapot using tea leaves, not bags.
* The tea-cosy was the forerunner of all the energy-saving devices that
we hear so much about today.
* Tea had only one colour, black. Green tea was not British.
* Coffee was only drunk when we had no tea….. and then it was Camp, and
came in a bottle.
* Cubed-sugar was regarded as posh.
* Figs and dates appeared every Christmas, but no one ever ate them.
* Sweets and confectionery were called toffees.
* Coconuts only appeared when the fair came to town.
* Black puddings were mined in Bolton, Lancashire.
* Jellied eels were peculiar to Londoners.
* Salad-cream was a dressing for salads; mayonnaise did not exist.
* Hors d'oeuvre was a spelling mistake.
* The starter was our main meal.
* Soup was a main meal.
* The menu consisted of what we were given, and was set in stone.
* Only Heinz made beans; any others were impostors.
* Left-overs went in the dog.
* Special food for dogs and cats was unheard of.
* Sauce was either brown or red.
* Fish was only eaten on Fridays.
* Fish didn't have fingers in those days.
* Eating raw fish was called poverty, not sushi.
* Ready meals only came from the fish-and-chip shop.
* For the best taste fish-and-chips had to be eaten out of old
newspapers.
* Frozen food was called ice-cream.
* Nothing ever went off in the fridge, because we never had one..
* Ice-cream only came in one colour and one flavour.
* None of us had ever heard of yoghurt.
* Jelly and blancmange was only eaten at parties.
* If we said that we were on a diet, we simply got less.
* Healthy food consisted of anything edible.
* Healthy food had to have the ability to stick to your ribs.
* Calories were mentioned, but they had nothing at all to do with food.
* The only criteria concerning the food that we ate were ... did we like
it and could we afford it.
* People who didn't peel potatoes were regarded as lazy so-and-sos.
* Indian restaurants were only found in India.
* A seven-course meal had to last a week.
* Brunch was not a meal.
* Cheese only came in a hard lump.
* If we had eaten bacon, lettuce, and tomato in the same sandwich
we would have been certified.
* A bun was a small cake back then.
* A tart was a fruit-filled pastry, not a lady of horizontal pleasure.
* The word" Barbie" was not associated with anything to do with food.
* Eating outside was called a picnic.
* Cooking outside was called camping.
* Seaweed was not a recognised food.
* Offal was only eaten when we could afford it.
* Eggs only came fried or boiled.
* Hot-cross buns were only eaten at Easter time.
* Pancakes were only eaten on Pancake Tuesday - in fact, in those days
it was compulsory.
* "Kebab" was not even a word, never mind a food.
* Hot dogs were a type of sausage that only the Americans ate.
* Cornflakes had arrived from America, but it was obvious that they
would never catch on.
* The phrase "boil in the bag" would have been beyond our realms of
comprehension.
* The idea of "oven chips" would not have made any sense at all to us.
* The world had not yet benefited from weird-and-wonderful things
like Pot Noodles, Instant Mash and Pop Tarts.
* We bought milk and cream at the same time in the same bottle.
* Sugar enjoyed a good press in those days, and was regarded as
being white gold.
* Lettuce and tomatoes in winter were just a rumour.
* Most soft fruits were seasonal, except perhaps at Christmas.
* Prunes were medicinal.
* Surprisingly, muesli was readily available in those days; it was called
cattle-feed.
* Turkeys were definitely seasonal.
* Pineapples came in chunks in a tin; we had only ever seen a picture of
a real one.
* We didn't eat Croissants in those days because we couldn't pronounce
them, we couldn't spell them, and we didn't know what they were.
* We thought that Baguettes were a serious problem the French needed
to deal with.
* Garlic was used to ward off vampires, but never used to flavour bread.
* Water came out of the tap; if someone had suggested bottling it and
charging treble for it they would have become a laughing-stock.
* Food hygiene was all about washing your hands before meals.
* Campylobacter, Salmonella, E.coli, Listeria, and Botulism were all
called "food poisoning".
* The one thing that we never, ever had on our table in the fifties …
elbows.

And true for the 60's too. At high school in the '70s we had something called curry but it could best be described as 'green mince'.

We had curry in the 60s because, when we lived in Loughborough, my mother took in Siamese students as lodgers and they made lovely Thai green curries, I am assured.

On the subject of food I could not resist posting this.

A colleague of mine in chemistry recently retired and we had a presentation for him on wednesday this week. Some of our lab staff spent their weekend making and icing this periodic table of the elements in cupcakes (inspired by an idea on the Royal Society of Chemistry website). I work with the nicest bunch of people. Though it was pointed out that the element with my initials is Darmstadtium (Ds), which is extremely unstable and probably very dense.... >:(

The two ladies with the initials 'Hg' were expected to fight over the mercury cake but one of them has given up cake for Lent so we were to be disappointed.  ;D

Now that's my idea of a good send off - just hope none of the cupcakes were very dense  ::)  ;)

Darren - that has the potential of being the most superb teaching tool! Everyone has to describe the 'flavours' of the cup cakes they choose. My wife, who did Chemistry, can recite them very well, I just get hopelessly lost, but there are some brilliant books based around the Periodic Table.

Up again at 6 on the hockey run, then off to Bethlehem by 8.30. Two and a half hours on the road and what better than to listen to Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610. I'd listened to the first disc twice by the time I got to Katikati, then onto disc two for the Ave Maris Stella and Magnificat and it was there by 11. Chat and lunch with two lovely people, Bill and Willi Dijk, with a tour of the nursery. A great day, and I came a way with a load of goodies.

This morning I got a cheque for £118.82 in full settlement of my "pothole damage claim.
Feeling cheery and as it was a nice day we decided to go to Logan gardens.  Bumbling along towards Ballantrae I noticed a black BMW with blue flashing lights following me.  Result £60 fine and 3 points.  Fair cop, I was doing 76.5mph downhill on a 60 mph stretch !  My first traffic offence in 50 years of driving.  I am still £58.82 up on the deal! .
Logan was still about 3 weeks behind in flowering.  There were drifts of Narcissus in full flower with the Magnolias still flowering along with some scented Rhododendrons - not a combination usually seen.
When I checked my email tonight, I found that we had won a 4 days birding holiday with Heatherlea at Nethy Bridge.  We had filled in the raffle form at the Bird Fair in Edinburgh last Sunday and then forgot about it completely.  I must get a lottery ticket for tomorrow!

I didn't win the lottery last night, however, I did get ONE number correct.   I think I should get a prize for consistently failing to get any correct numbers at all.  My one and only win was about 20 years ago when I got £10.  I think I probably funded half the Olympic stadium with my selfless charitable contributions !

I have no idea, maybe it is just stopping over on route to somewhere else and as we have the longest runway in europe it would no trouble landing. We get some big ones occasionally for that reason. They won't give us any information until it is gone, you know the usual security stuff.

The aircraft does not need a 3000 metre runway.  Prestwick's is 2987 metres and the 225 was airborne at the 2000 metre mark.

I can remember the old TU104 taking off at Prestwick.  The only way they got airborne was by retracting the undercarriage.  I saw one just about taking the airport boundary fence off as it staggered into the air.  The golfers at Prestwick had to duck as it passed over !

The required runway length includes the ability to stop should you abort the take-off at the critical speed, hence a 3000m runway with lift off at about 2000m is about right, leaving 1000m to stop the brute.

The required runway length is also a function of take-off weight for the mission to be flown, air temperature and pressure altitude (note pressure not geometric), these last two affecting the amount of lift generated by the wings and the available thrust from the engines. Oh yes and don't forget to account for any slope on the runway.

Are you bored yet!

Boring some more !   - and also the wind speed down the runway..There is almost always a semi-gale blowing down the runway.

Talking about semi-gales , one of my meconopsis opened up yesterday, by this afternoon, half of the petals had been blown off,  This is in a sheltered site !

Angie,
It's a wonderful mix of wonderful plants -most of which we'd never be able to grow at home!
So nice to see a garden where plants are enjoyed so much. It was only a short visit but we saw so much. Thanks again, Michael, for your hospitality.
We then drove down to visit with Ashley and Helen in their idyllic country cottage and another garden full of amazing plants. More wonderful Irish hospitality - we've been looked after very well and hope to repay their generosity someday in Australia.
We're now resting up in Glengarriff and hope to get across to Garinish Island tomorrow.
cheers
fermi and Will.

Fermi I can imagine that they both have wonderful gardens. Mr Amazing has so much wonderful plants I cant imagine anything else.
I loved our visits to Ireland and like you say the Irish are so friendly. I hope you like Garnish Island, when we were there is was a wonderful sunny day and the seals were fast asleep on the rocks.
Tried to look for the pictures of the seals but couldn't find in file.
Hope to see some great pictures when you are back home and find the time.
Here are a couple that I took.

It was great to meet Fermi and Will, and they came with some amazing seeds including Russian pulsatillas from Olga, a Kazakh tulip, narcissus, brunsvigea and Australian calostemma - the two latter pre-germinated for good measure 8)
Thanks again both of you.  We hope you found your way to Gougane Barra today by the off-map road ;D, and enjoy Glengarriff and Garinish over the next few days.

Thank you too Olga for your very kind gift :-*   Please let me know if there's anything from here that I can send you in return.

Lovely pictures Angie; I first went there as a young boy with my grandparents and have such happy memories of the place.
When next you visit Cork and Kerry I hope we can meet.

Such a friendly and beautiful place. Hubby really liked Glengariff. Can you guess why  ::) I loved the scenery from there.

I moaned in March about our three year old Great Niece  who had tumours on both her kidneys and in her lung - but who was showing tremendous strength in the face of treatment, bless her.
Quote
Thanks for the comments and messages about little Christina.  We all feel so helpless in this situation when we would do anything to relieve her of this illness yet we are completely powerless.

The chemo is shrinking the tumours - that's fantastic news so far - but there is a long road to travel yet - literally and metaphorically - for other treatments she will have to travel to Glasgow . More direct stress for her and her parents. Her Father will go with her, of course - leaving her Mum to worry at home with her little sister- about whom we are now also  anxious, since Christina may have had the tumours since birth.
So much for our little Toot to go through.

Christina went again on Sunday with her family to hospital in Glasgow . She
had another scan yesterday and today it is planned to remove one kidney
and as much of the tumour on the "better" kidney as possible.  This all
sounds terrible but it is tempered somewhat by the fact that the
chemotherapy she has been through these last few months has shrunk the
tumours considerably -  in fact the one on her lung is no longer visible.
The surgeon is hopeful that he will be able to retain enough of the second
kidney to allow a reasonable function but it all depends what he finds  in
the actual operation.
So we are all on tenterhooks at the moment.   It may be that the second
kidney will not be able to be saved after all and then she will have to
endure full dialysis as well as the  radiation which it seems she must
already expect. An awful lot of intervention for such a little person to
withstand.

We are told that she would have to wait at least two years after operation
to be eligible for kidney transplant, if that is needed.  That would
presuppose some other wee soul has been lost, so that's not something we can
face right now.

Tuesday afternoon 25th June :  Christina is still in surgery  in Glasgow but the surgeon sent out a message that he has managed to remove all the tumour from the second kidney - Good News!
I know there is still a long way to go, but this is great news so far.

Horrendous scenario all round.  Makes our troubles seem really feeble.

I'm so sorry to hear this Maggi, and wish little Christina and her family all the very best.
Indeed it is hard to be a helpless bystander.  Although young children may not fully understand what's happening to them, with their great courage and love of life they can inspire and fortify all who love them.

Thank you Ashley.
So comforting that forumists are sending their good wishes to Christina.
We are so proud of how her parents are coping with all this.

There is still a long way to go for Christina to endure more treatment but at least she still has one kidney which we must hope will function well enough.
This at least seems like a triumph today!

Title: Re: Yes, I'm so happy, 2013!
Post by: Maggi Young on July 12, 2013, 03:24:45 PM
We are very happy indeed!
Christina is home from Glasgow after the removal of one kidney and the excision of the tumour from the second kidney and the test results suggest that  there is no cancer in the lymph nodes and that only ten percent of the better kidney has been lost in the removal of its tumour.  She is doing remarkably well  when you consider how much she has already been through. Good news is that she will not have to have any radiotherapy (which would have meant more time in Glasgow for all the family and a daily "knockout" for wee Christina to enable the radiotherapy treatment).
Yes, she still has about 16 treatments of chemotherapy still to come but she can have that here in Aberdeen and, we hope, spend most of the time at home.
After what seemed a horrible setback yesterday, when a junior doctor told her parents that all was not well, the opposite of what the Glasgow surgeon had said and which caused a deep depression all round and we all wondered what on earth was going on - the Aberdeen oncologist has reassured us that all is indeed going  well, and this has been confirmed  by the world expert in this cancer (a very clever woman from Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, I'm told) who has reviewed all the test data from Glasgow that has already been reported on from the Welsh Centre where such work is done.
Goodness knows how this frightening false report came from - perhaps the results for some poor child who is not so lucky as Christina  :'( - no matter - it should not have happened.
Thank goodness that there is now real light at the end of this tunnel...

Extraordinary how many  medical people are involved in the case around the country - the doctors are as widely spread as the kind messages you have given for our precious great-niece.

From Christina and her parents- thanks for your kindness. I'm so pleased to be able to give this happy news.

That is good news Maggi. These little ones seem to take everything in their stride it always amazes me. Its good that Christina is getting the rest of her treatment in Aberdeen this will make it much easier for the family. What a worry this must have been to all the family you included. Hopefully soon she will be back to her normal self and can enjoy the rest of her childhood.

Today was Fun Day at Linlithgow Union Canal Society.  Main event was the cardboard boat race across the canal basin.  No waterproofing is allowed only adhesive tape/string to hold the sections together.  My son's team in their boat 'Cygnus maximus' won 1st for the fastest team round the course without sinking.  Fewer than half of the 20 boats managed to complete before sinking!

No help - all my own work, including LOTS of running up and down steps to pick up the little green clips which have a life of their own and have a habit of popping out when you are trying to place the next one in line. Time will tell whether it is robust enough for the velcro-closed panels covering the vents to actually work without ripping.
