White Plastic Plant labels
« on: June 27, 2016, 07:51:48 AM »
Does anyone know a source of white plastic plant labels that work properly ?  Twenty years ago such labels were fexible and durable and had a surface on which one could write with pencil. We still have some of these, albeit a little yellow by now.

Soon after the labels we buy from LBS or similar manufacturers changed to ones which can only be written on easily with a 'permanent' marker pen (which fades to illegibility in a year). These labels also are more brittle and become more so after exposure to sunlight.

Are the older, less shiny, more durable type still available ?

Have you tried dipping the end of the pencil in water?

The ones from LBS need to be rubbed lightly with wire wool before they will accept a pencil even if the lead is damp.
Not found that they go brittle any quicker than the older ones though.

The Anglo-Scottish ones in David's link are excellent and take pencil well. I've never known them go brittle either.

I have these ones from Wells and Winter they gave a rough surface for writing with a pencil and are UV stabilised.  I have used them for 8 years and are still in excellent condition

They also do other sizes

Many thanks for the suggestions of alternatice suppliers. I don't fancy treating 2000 or so labels a year to the wire wool treatment so the alternative suppliers sound like the better option. Just need to check out prices.

Gosh, I wish I'd known about these a couple of months ago - I ended up ordering some from China because I couldn't find these in the UK.

These labels look like the ones available at SRGC shows and also our local SW Scotland group did a bulk purchase to sell to our members. The postage from Anglo-Scottish seems a bit much at £12 though!

Actually I find the cheap ones from Wilkinsons as good as any. One side takes pencil better than the other to the extent that it is hard to remove when re-using the label.

I bought 1000 white plastic labels for about 15 quid on eBay this spring. They are not brilliant but work ok.
