Corydalis gorinensis - seem to be the rarest Corydalis, known only from one hill ("bik") on Gorin-riverside. Unfortunately I have only vegetative progeny from single tuber and as species is selfsterile - only hybrids comes out from seedlings.

[attachimg=2]
Collection of Corydalis from section Leonticoides with perennial tubers, again increasing only from seeds, but easy hybridizes forming beautiful hybrids - but they are not true to name of species.

[attachimg=3]
Great surprise - the white seedling which appeared between seedlings of Iris willmottiana.

[attachimg=4]
Close up of Iris willmottiana white seedling - is it true species or hybrid?  I will pollinate it with blue ones.

[attachimg=5]

a couple more....

[attachimg=1]
During CMGG trip to Georgia organized by Georgian Institute of Botany our team was mainly interested in Galanthus, but I and Henrik Zetterlund from Gothenburg BG used day on huge field with Scilla rosenii searching for special colour forms. This one has violet shaded flowers.

[attachimg=2]
Very special was this one form of Scilla rosenii - white with blue tips of flower segments, but pure albinos were found as well.

Now for  some  of  Janis' Corydalis.....
"Now in full bloom are Corydalis. Of course - far from this glory, when I grew them in outside garden. In pots (now)  they are too crowded and growing capacity is much poorer. Stems are brittle and replacing of pots outside is not easy, too. This winter I lost some very nice things - from species they are ussuriensis, repens, fumariifolia, magadanica, bracteata (the last in greenhouse only, some selfsawn seedlings left in outside garden on Hosta bed) and few of my very first cultivars - Blushing Girl, Snowstorm, Zarja Povolzja and may be few others. They all were selected around 50 years ago and I think that it was age what bring death to them. Only propagation from seeds are renewing plant, but during vegetative multiplying (splitting) plants became elder every coming year and once comes end... That is why I recommend to....  buy all colour types and to allow them selfsowing in garden, in such a way keeping all colour types as renewed tubers."

[attachimg=1]
Sic transit gloria mundi - my Corydalis beds in outside garden 16 years ago...

[attachimg=2]
From Far East species my favorite is Corydalis ornata with its rainbow of white-blue-lilac-pinkish colours

Wonderful Corydalis!
Somehow my favourite from the unnamed is the first on 01-02, the smoky blue shade is very nice.
C.ornata is fabulous. I tried it once maybe 9 years ago, but it died the first winter (outside).
I'm sad to hear about Janis losing so many Corydalis this winter.

I'm sad to hear about Janis losing so many Corydalis this winter.

I think the  problem has been them not  growing  so well in pots now as they did in the  open  and he has less time  to  repot them.

It is too bad when good cultivars are lost; saddening to hear about their loss. Hope is that some will survive in people gardens.
I don't have a Corydalis favorite, I like them all :)

I wished many will read and trust what Janis recommends:
"That is why I recommend to....  buy all colour types and to allow them selfsowing in garden, in such a way keeping all colour types as renewed tubers."
It may hold true for other bulbuous/tuberous species.

edit  to add comment from Janis: " One of my customers asked me about locality where was collected Tulipa turkestanica Schachimardan. Unfortunately I not remember who asked me and now I try to reach him via Facebook. I got this tulip from Arnis and today met him and asked - where is this place. This tulip was collected on mountain pass at heights of river Schachimardan. More detailed reply I found after remembering about Allium schachimardanicum and in Monograph of Reinhard Fritsch about Central Asian alliums I found: (47) Allium schachimardanicum Vved., Opred. rast. Srednej Azii 2: 84, 317 (1971). —Allium "fetisso-vii" sensu Vved., Flora URSS 4: 263 (1935), p. p. min. quoad pl. Alaic. —Type: Kirgizstan: Alaijskij khr[ebet], bass[ein] reki Shakhimardan, ushch[el'e] Mashalang, v teni skal [Alai range, drainage of Shakhimardan river, gorge Mashalang, in the shadow of rocks]
So it was collected in Kirgizstan, Alai mnt. ridge, at place where starts river Shakhimardan. "

 "Yesterday I was too busy watering pots and I was going for bumble-bee family for pollinating my peaches and apricots, grown instead of bulbs (I'm shortening commercial growing) in one of poly-tunnels - the first flowers opened just yesterday - now no need to "play bee" with paintbrush. "...Now back to the flowers. Although cruel wind and hard for Gunite to work outside, it's easier for me in greenhouses. Researching microscope crocus leaves, pollinated, photographed and continue to bring out pots - yesterday Eurasian eritrons and cyclamens.

Again back to flowers. Regardless of strong and cold wind, in greenhouse working was easier than on open field for my wife. I'm still bringing out pots with bulbs which don't like hot weather. Last Thursday I brought bumble-bee family to pollinate my apricots and peaches which just started blooming in my former bulb greenhouse."

"Beautiful weather and so much to do that I haven't time to work on pictures, so this morning only very few from garden, not from greenhouse."

[attachimg=1]
Fritillaria raddeana in my outside rockery - the first bloomer this season

[attachimg=2]
Tulipa dasystemon - here were thrown out small seedlings which in two years grew up to blooming without any attention

[attachimg=3]
Another spot under birch and oak tree where used soil with some seeds in it and may be some bulb were thrown out - now turned to nice field with various Corydalis, Scilla and other bulbs

[attachimg=4]
This one is from greenhouse - one of my very first selections from from Tulipa greigii, made some 40-45 years ago and named 'Sunset' (Saulriets) - excellent grower and best increaser between pure T. greigii (not hybrid with other species).

"The flower festival continues, the culmination of tulips is just beginning, but other 'onions' ( bulbs) are blooming too."

[attachimg=1]
"Tulipa praestans from Hodji-obi-Garm, Varzob gorge, Tajikistan, originally collected in 1982 during 39 years it gave no one offset and no seeds up to 2010 when I got another bulb of this species and crossed both. Almost incredible longevity of single bulb, only one T. fosteriana bulb lives with me longer - 44 years."

[attachimg=2]
"The name Tulipa binutans means that this species twice bends flowers down - at first in buds, before opening and again after end of blooming. Quite unique feature and I can't understand those botanists who regard it as synonymous to T. biflora."

[attachimg=3]
It is the best form of Tulipa hissarica - here blooming in my collection - with undulated leaves and forming up to 4 flowers from bulb. Usually blooms much earlier than other forms, but this year - as the last from my Tulipa hissarica samples.

"This afternoon I decided to show few of the most famous cultivars raised by me - they just now are in full bloom."

[attachimg=1]
Incredibly gigantic and bright hybrid between Dutch cultivar of Tulipa greigii 'Lovely Surprise'(raised by Lafeber?) with wild T. fosteriana. Certainly polyploid, with very thick and strong stem around 60-70 cm tall, huge flowers and good increaser. Single "fault" by Dutch bulbgrower's opinion - makes too large bulbs and can't be packed in standard box sufficient number of bulbs... Named 'Akadēmiķis Saharovs'

[attachimg=2]
I raised it in Soviet time and named after famous dissident of soviet regime as 'Academician Sacharov'

[attachimg=3]
Another excellent increaser - Tulipa greigii aurea cultivar 'Saulriets' ('Sunset').

[attachimg=4]
Tulipa kaufmanniana hybrid with T. greigii named 'Latvian Gold' - 'Latvju Zelts'

[attachimg=5]
Close up of 'Latvian Gold' - really flowers are something more yellow shaded.

Janis: "My most famous daffodil cultivar 'Freedom Stars' ('Brīvības Zvaigznes') raised from cross between N. triandrus 'April Tears' and split corona 'Canasta'. Named after 3 stars on top of Freedom monument in center of Riga - capital of Latvia. Most often it bears 3 flowers on top of stem, but could be even 5."

[attachimg=2]
'Monument of Freedom in center of Riga after which I named my daffodil cultivar. Picture from Internet.'

[attachimg=3]
Narcissus 'Freedom Stars'

'To get this hybrid I pollinated 50 flowers of 'April Tears' and got only 15 seeds, 8 of them reached flowering and turned that 4 were ordinar split corona, 4 showed triandrus shape - two were split coronas and 2 ordinary looking. The first blooming was 8 years after sowing.'

On the day that we learn that the RHS is giving the  first Sir Daniel Hall award, in recognition of his significant personal achievement relating to bulbs, to Janis Ruksans  we have  some  more  of  Janis' photos to share. The RHS said that  Janis'  commitment to cultivation, exploration and education has produced an impressive collection of work that earned the RHS Bulb Committee’s commendation.
