Leena, I have read that the japonica leaves are more shiny or glossy and the flowers have a scent.

Hmm, I will have to look at the leaves this spring. In pictures shiny or glossy doesn't show. Thank you.
As to scent, I think it is too cold here when Hepaticas flower and I haven't noticed any scent. It is the same thing with some snowdrops or even Viola odorata.
There is no scent unless I take the flowers inside (or to greenhouse, that is how I noticed the scent in Viola odorata for the first time some years ago) to warmth.

I think the leaves and plants of H.japonica are smaller than nobilis, but it is difficult to be sure and compare when the plants are small and young.
