Anybody experience with Nassauvia
« on: October 12, 2015, 09:18:58 AM »
Hello,

I'm quite interested in Nassauvia spec. Does anybody have some experience with this genus? I live in Germany zone 6b.
I would be very happy if somebody of you could share their experience.

Regards,

    Michael

Hello Michael, welcome to the forum.

Quite a few members are growing Nassauvia successfully, so I hope you may get some useful advice.

I have no experience with them in my garden but I have seen them in the wild (Neuquen, Argentina). They all seem to need very good drainage. You can see the habitat in the pictures:

Great pictures Hoy,

I wish one day I have the opportunity to visit their natural habitat.

I grew some species back in the 70s - didn't do too well. Grew some from seed for a few years also. I gave them fairly standard alpine house treatment but they were short lived.

I can see on the pictures that the soil is very gravely, but it seems that it is slightly wet.
I have expected that they grow in very dry conditions?

No, the soil was never wet. I think the important factor is drainage. Although the soil is very gravelly it also contains dust so after a shower it keeps some water.
