Bulb Log 11/04/07
« on: April 12, 2007, 10:19:23 AM »
Ian that collection of Erythroniums is totally amazing

I was at Margaret Glynn's on Tuesday. She too has masses of Erythroniums but never any hybrids. Any Idea why not?

Ian,

Fabulous erythroniums. Really enjoyed the photographs and will certainly continue to seek out some more erythroniums.

Regarding growing from seed - I have not been so successful with growing erythroniums from seed. They germinated well but I lost an unreasonable amount over the first winter. This was probably due to my inclination to overwatering, I imagine. However, last year I put out the pots of young seedlings into the garden. They have all come up this spring and are looking much healthier than those I tried to grow in the glasshouse.

Sorry, Luc,

You'll have to explain.

What is it that you do not see - of course, if you do not see it you might not be able to tell what it is you do not see.

In case it was Ian's Bulblog for the 11th of this month, here is the URL: http://www.srgc.org.uk/bulblog/log2007/110407/log.html

I only got to see it about an hour or so after I posted my message of despair...

This doesn't keep me from saying again what an unbelievably beautiful pics our BD has posted once more.  Thanks Ian !!!

Hurumph! My Erythronium sybericum had two flower buds on it before I went away and they opened and have gone over in the week! :(

That's sibericum, Anthony... and in the wildlife thread you had screeming instead of screaming... you are getting sloppy and since I've just been chiding Paddy, I'll have a go at you, too!  Though I reckon we're all pretty good (bad!) at messy typewriting.  Be grateful your flowers have just gone past in your absence... it seems as if beasties are chewing half of our flowers in front of our eyes, here. The garden is full of chomped flowers, holey leaves... can't remember when there's been so much pest damage. A lot of the damage is being done by caterpillars, Ian says they're of some kind of moth, though how he knows that when we can't find the ruddy things, I don't know!

Craigton Who? / What?  We use Craigton as a prefix ...there are frits, narcissus, erythroniums, corydalis...which one is budding?
Since you go on to mention Erythronium revolutum, then it might be E. Craigton Cover Girl,  E. Craigton Cream, E. Craigton Beauty....(Craigton Maggi isn't released yet! Fine, big, robust creature, she is, too!)
When you say 'in bulk' , how many are you talking about? Difficult to get erys in big numbers, they're slow to increase for the most part, so 'bulk' would be expensive as well as tricky! You get our surplus bulb list, I hope we are reliable!! ???

Of course, there's a reliable source of erythroniums at Craigton, Aberdeen  ;)
for a longer wait, there is always Ron Ratko who always lists loads of fantastic wild collected seed of many species and forms of Erythronium.  He doesn't have a website but will send an e-mail catalogue and accept orders by e-mail and payment by credit card which simplifies things.  I'm not sure whether I should list his private e-mail address on this forum, but can forward it if anyone wants it.

I spotted the spilleng mastike once I reread it, later. Too late. Too tired. No excuse.

Apologies for anyone wondering where the bulb log for this week 18th April is.... Fred Admin is away for a few days and will get it onsite when he returns. Someone phoned today to ask if because Ian was giving his talk "BULB LOG LIVE" for the AGS in Dublin tonight did that mean there was no Bulb Log online this week? No, indeed, normal service will be resumed soon! Many thanks to all who enquired about the Log, and about Lily and her eye surgery...nice to know you care! :-* ::)

That's why we have a "modify" button Anthony. I sometimes modify a week after I posted rather than have people think my spelling's that bad :)
