Flowering Now in Denver, Colorado

Today, as occasionally happens, a cold dull day was cheered by the arrival of an email from Panayoti Kelaidis of the Denver Botanic Gardens in Colorado, USA. There was a jocular pictorial attachment to his email but he soon got back to botanical business, so to speak......
"On a more SERIOUS note, I counted over 20 things in bloom on a walk
around Denver Botanic Gardens today: a few of these are posted at

"They couldn't fit the various Corylus, Viburnum x bodnatense starting
up again, several different Hellebores, including oodles of H. niger,
the first drabas, another dozen kinds of crocus, Erica carnea cvs. and
of course Acer sacharrinum, which is blooming all over town and making
people miserable with hay fever. It's apparent we're due for another
cold snap!" Panayoti .

DBG is one of my favourite spots to visit, though I haven't been there for eight years! When I lived in the US I visited about 4 times which was quite a good effort as I was living in Louisiana at the time! Of course, my favourite area was the Rock Garden and Alpine beds.

Speaking of DBG and Panayoti, he made a very enthusiastic contribution on a Mesembryanthemum e-mail list I'm on, about a month ago.
He spoke about a remarkable new hybrid swarm of Aloinopsis x Titanopsis x Nanathus made by Bill Adams, proprietor of Sunscapes Nursery, CO. These plants are hardy in Denver and normally flowers in late winter. I'm very interested in hardy mesembs, (there are more than Delosperma), and tried e-mail Panayoti for more info, but of course he is a busy man. The nursery has a webpage with some pictures

Martin Tversted is a frienly guy running Northern Nursery in Denmark. He is currently checking the hardiness for a lot of mesembs in a climate perhaps more Scottish than that in Colorado ;)

Denver Botanic Gardens are justifiably famous and we were delighted to welcome Panayoti Kelaidis to the SRGC Discussion Weekend at the beginning of the month.
Panayoti is Curator of Plant Collections at the Denver Botanic Gardens and was the designer of its Rock Alpine Garden, one of the best collections of alpine plants in North America. An internationally known plantsman and recipient of many awards including the 2003 Award of Excellence from National Garden Clubs, Inc., Panayoti travels extensively to study and collect plants, lectures worldwide on rock garden plants, and is the author of numerous books and articles.
