Acer griseum hybrid?

(1/2) > >>

Nik:
Among my Acer griseum seedlings I have this very interesting looking one. It appears to be a hybrid… or it could just be a mutant. Has anyone seen something similar?

Maggi Young:
I can't comment as I've never had good seed off my Acer griseums! :'(
And it's so long since they were seedlings that I can't remember! :-\

Nik:
Maggi, I understand that this is a common problem with Acer griseum. While most trees are prolific seed producers, very few give rise to viable seeds. The seeds for my seedlings were collected in a public urban area from a tree that has hundreds of seedlings underneath every year. They all get mowed down early on. The only other maple species in the vicinity are Acer truncatum and Acer platanoides. If my strange seedling is a hybrid, it will be with one of those two as the father. I will post more pictures when the leaves expand.

Nik:
Here are a couple of pictures a day later. It does seem to have platanoides features.

Nik:
Definitely a griseum progeny, judging by the pubescent leaf underside.
