Pleione and Orchidaceae / Re: Pleione 2024

These Pleiones survived our last (mild) winter in the open garden. Left plant is P. formosana, middle P. formosana alba and at
right is P. limprichtii. Nothing special, but I like the anyway. Got the white plants from a late friend without name and origin.

It is strange how many names this peony cultivar has:
- Golden Temple
- Golden Temple of Nara
[...]
- Kinkaku
- Jing Ge
- Jin Ge

It's lovely, I grew it years ago, and I need to find it again! All the Japanese and Chinese names above are basically the same, 金閣, directly translating to Golden Pavillion.

The image is a reasonable reproduction of the true colour; the plant is possibly a little paler but not hugely. I would say this is more towards a purple than pink - maybe 'bright lilac'.
I bought 2 young plants of Lewisia rediviva from Susan Band when she closed Pitcairn down. This one flowered for the first time last year. I'm awaiting first flowering of the second one to see what its colour is - buds are well developed..... hope it's also a strong colour. Textbook descriptions include a colour range from almost white through deep pink and even carmine.
As you say utterly gorgeous!

From Wim Boens:
"Dear Crocus-friends,

I hope you’re all doing well and you’ve had a great gardening year thus far. Here enclosed you’ll find the letter with the request for donation of Crocus seeds and corms, and the info you need to participate in the seed-exchange.

! 2 remarks I need to make every year:

!! Non-donors have to request the list to receive it!

!! Please dehusk and clean the seed as well as possible, If I have to clean all the seeds that takes a lot of time!

All the best and here's to a great Crocus-year,

Wim Boens

It's that time of the year again, when I'm begging for seeds for the seed exchange of the Crocus Group...the mails have been sent out, those who are a member and haven't received an e-mail, please let me know! And those who want to participate in the exchange, just send me a PM.

It is strange how many names this peony cultivar has:

- Golden Temple of Nara
- Souvenir de Maxime Cornu
- Souvenir de Prof. Maxime Cornu
- Kinkaku
- Jing Ge

This cultivar was bred in 1907 by Louis Henry, it is the second oldest lutea hybrid - a cross between the species Paeonia suffruticosa and Paeonia lutea.
The problem with this very nice peony is, that the flowers are always hanging down, as they are so heavy (but also beautiful). The influence of P. lutea is not only visible by its yellow colour, but also that it has sometimes not only one flower per stem but a second one below from an leave axil.
I have mine since more than 20 years. It is meanwhile a large shrub of around 1m height and 1m in diameter.721400-0

Oh my, that Lewisia rediviva is absolutely gorgeous, David!  It seems to be a stronger shade of lilac/pink than the one I have seen or grown more usually.  Is it more to a purple shade or is it an effect of the camera?

A great welcome and day out at the show. Many thanks to all those who helped to make it so.

When I left home on the Friday afternoon the flower buds on this Lewisia rediviva were tightly closed. What a difference on Sunday morning......
