Title: how to transport cactus
Post by: wildflower123 on November 02, 2015, 12:52:47 PM
Hey people!
I want to know how to transport the cacti correctly.
My sister have to move to a new house. And she asked me to help her with the move. She is abroad now, so I will do everything by myself. She has diffrent cacti, small and middel sized.
How to transport them? What to wrap it in?
thanks

 Hello!

I suggest  wrapping with bubble wrap - I'm hoping you know that name?   Very useful packing material when moving anything- but excellent for cactus.

Several layers round the sharp parts of the plant then all around plant and pot together should hold all nice and neat and safe  for the  move.

It's also good stuff to wrap a cactus to allow re-potting too.

Do the bubbles stand the sharp parts? I think longer spikes will still be problem.
I put them in cardboard boxes on a layer of crumpled newspaper.
When I have to put them into boxes, I stuff some crumpled newspaper into the pots and fix them with some masking tape. So the soil stays where it should. crumbled newspaper is my favorite, form a sausage like newspaper crumple to wrap around fixes as above, works too.
Its cheap too.

Polystyrene board put on the Spikes works also well for the more sturdy ones. So the cactus holds its own box.

Well, if you put enough bubble wrap  they will be fine.

Your  idea with polystyrene ( styrofoam)  sheets is a very good one I can see that would work well.

Thanks for great solutions! I liked the idea with bubble wrap. I have some in my garage. Also, my neighbor promised to give me more bubble wrapping material.
I’m going to wrap every plant separately and then put it in a bin, similar to this https://www.mrosupply.com/material-handling/storage-bins-accessories/2542043_1102571_lewis-bins/ (https://www.mrosupply.com/material-handling/storage-bins-accessories/2542043_1102571_lewis-bins/)
I hope, I will not damage neither plants, nor myself :)
