Title: Stirling Show at Dunblane 20th March 2010
Post by: Maggi Young on March 20, 2010, 08:15:31 PM
A lovely day, full of sunshine and friendly faces for the Stirlingshire show today at Dunblane.
Lots of Forumists about the place and some 'lurkers' who are promising to join in soon  ;)

The 'Glenrothes Greenfinger', also known as 'Secret Squirrel' but more  properly that maestro of the exhibition plant, Cyril Lafong won all manner of silverware and the premier award, the Forrest Medal for the most meritorious plant in the show. The Forrest medal plant was  Primula 'Broadwell Milkmaid' shown here with its companions , also from Cyril, in the main  three pan class.
This particular milkmaid was "well broad" as such charming rustic lassies often are and took a real trick with the judges.
The pot of Trillium rivale 'Purple Heart' must have run a close contender for the top honour, I would have thought... a super pan of this very pretty form. The third member of the group was Corydalis popovii, a comely threesome and no mistake....... not that the Squirrel is in the habit of making any mistakes!! ;D ;)
The BD was in charge of the one  camera we took and so the pix are down to him.... precious few people, I fear!

Quite a lot of 'stuff' to do here tonight so perhaps more pix tomorrow after work.

A few general pictures from Dunblane. The number of exhibits was down, as we all expected, but was still very respectable considering the recent (three months) weather.
Half an hour before judging starts the 'usual suspects' were looking concerned.
'Bulb' side of the display
'non-bulb' side of the display
appreciative visitors
A 'pan' of Eranthis 'Guinea Gold' from the Young's.
Iris winowgradowii from Peter Semple
Miniature garden from Watt Russel
The display from RBG Edinburgh
The finest exhibit of all!
 ;D

Show Secretary Sandy Leven staged this display of plants .....lots of snowdrops still fresh for the Galanthophiles to coo over and a super selection of other plants besides...... how he managedthis along with other show entries and duties, I can't imagine!
He was rewarded with a Gold Medal for his effort on this fine arrangement  8)

Thanks for posting photos of this splendid show - the Eranthis 'Guinea Gold' pan is stunning and Sandy Leven's display of plants looking so perfect is amazing, a well deserved Gold Medal indeed. Lovely general shot to tantalise, thanks to everyone  :)

Here are a few more pictures from the show.

Firstly the Royal Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh Display.

A few plants that especially took my eye were.
Gymnospermium albertii
A very fine pot of Narcissus cantabricus seedlings some of which had very long petals my favourite is the one on the extreme left.

And a pot of Dionysia curviflora x tapetodes.

Pity that the light was not very good in this corner of the Hall until the sun moved round as we were packing up.

I think that considering the winter this was a very good show judging by the pictures. You have to be a week or two behind us even here in Northunberland and as I know from E Lancs yesterday a weeks sun and warmth makes a huge difference. Cyrils three pan was magnificent, any of them would have qualified for the supreme honour, it must have been close between the trillium and the primula and on the day its what the judges can see to be the right plant....for sure there would be plenty talk

Thanks David, Ian and Maggi for kicking off !

Not even the fiercest of Winters seems to be able to beat Scottish growers !!  ;D ;D

Some gorgeous plants there... so difficult to choose a favourite.
I do think though that you should consider putting Cyril in a class of his own...  ;D ;D  - this 3 pan entry blew me off my socks !! (and that does take some blowing..  ;D)

Looking forward to (much) more pictures !

last few....

Anne Wright was pleased to see her raising, Narcissus 'Jim Lad' at another show... here is our wee potful on its first show outing, along with a pot of N. 'Ferdie' ... (thanks to dear Otto!!) ... we think they make a very nice pairing.
A repeat of Ferdie .
'Ferdie' was raised by Glenbrook  Bulb Farm  in Australia, before 1992. It is a very neat little hybrid  of N. rupicola  x N. cyclamineus

Watt Russell's super planted trough.....

and the last few....

corydalis selection
hallview
Peter Semple's Iris and certificates
Sandy's table of his mega-display; he says it all wnet in one car-load..... several folks are looking foir the contact number for the Elastic-Estate-Car garage. ;)

Saxifraga selection...... the winning two pan on the far right of the shot are from the Shows's most Southerly exhibitor this year....  the quiet charmer and fine exhibitor,Tom Green from Rowland Gill. Second to Tom in that class was local member Sam Sutherland.  Entries from those two plus Ian Steele and a.n.others!

Rhododendron leucapsis and white Daphne Mezureum.

You'll have spotted from earlier shots that both Ian Steele and Sam Sutherland were Stewards at the show.
These Show Teams are made up of a terrific set of skilled multi-taskers, don't you know?!!

Many thanks to Sandy and all his Team, particularly those working tirelessly ALL DAY in the kitchen to provide refreshments of the highest order to the hungry hordes and to the lucky Judges!
You gave us all a wonderful day, hot on the heels of having done it all last month forthe Early Bulb Day.... and  it is  very much appreciated.  :-* :-* :-*

Thanks Maggi and Ian for so many great photos and information on every aspect of the Show at Dunblane.  It really has brought spring to the mountain tops and there are so many wonderful exhibits the judges must have had a tough time deciding - very pleased 'Guinea Gold has a golden moment!' that it richly deserves  :)

Maggi, the Rhodo. is leucaspis.  Super to see all those lovely plants again.  Good to see faces with names too.  I know most of them by sight but I forget names too often.

Ian
on the bench 2 picture, there is a conifer left of the pine. Is this a Cryptomeria ?
Lovely pictures of the show. What a pity to be so far away?

Yes it is  :P

Is there an "expert" at the Stirling Show? Where happy to have a name for this diamond of a rock garden plant.
Because trees and shrubs are my job and so every new cultivar is a piece forward in the plant world.

Uli, I have just heard from Stan da Prato, who exhibited the Cryptomeria.... he tells me " it is C. japonica spiralis which I am told is sometimes called 'granny’s ringlets' "

Thank you for the answer Maggi, but this plant can not be 'Spiralis'. This is a upright cultivar, with sprouts of 10-15 cm per year. The plant in the show is a other dwarf species. Maybe it is 'Pygmea', but have not seen it by myself only on pictures.

Thanks, Uli, I'm sure the grower will be interested to hear this. It was the name under which he received the plant, I am sure.... another mis-naming! :-\
