Hello Everyone

I can just about claim this as our summer update even if the mornings are beginning to feel somewhat autumnal! While you have not heard from us for a while we have been busy putting together an interesting programme for the coming 2023-2024 session with a few changes which we hope will see more of us getting together. However as I am still waiting for some final details for some of our talks in 2024 and our September meeting is fast approaching I thought it best to share with you all the programme up to the end of the year. All of our meetings this year will be in our usual venue of the Conference Room at RBGE.

Tuesday 12th September  at 1930hrs we will have the pleasure of welcoming Willie Campbell, retired Head Gardener at Gargunnock House, Mr Scottish Rhododendron Society and Meconopsis Group stalwart with a talk entitled “Botanical Travels- In Search of Plants in Wild Places” Not to be missed!

Tuesday 10th October at 1930hrs we will have the greatest double act since Morecambe and Wise with our own Aaron Marshall and Josh Tranter enthusing over their three week stay at Munich Botanic Gardens outstation, The Schachen, 2000m up in the Wetterstein Mountains, Germany. Complete with thunderstorms, storm and fantastic plants!

On Saturday 18th November we will have an all day celebration of our group and the plants we love. Starting at 1030hrs we will hold our brief AGM before moving on to our three special speakers-

David Trudgill, former Head of Zoology Department at SCRI, introduced seed of the Lesser Butterfly Orchid to his wildflower meadow twenty years ago, beginning a journey which now sees fourteen species of native orchids thriving there, He will share some of his knowledge and experience in 'Creating an Orchid Meadow and its potential Conservation value'.

Connor Smith, well known to many of us from his time here at RBGE, he is now in charge of the Rock Garden at Utrecht Botanic Gardens and will talk about this fascinating and unique garden.

Alan Oatway, Show Secretary of the admirable Kendal Show, is making the long trek north to talk to us about his travels looking for Washington Wildflowers.

I hope these whet your appetite for the coming months and I look forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks!

Best Wishes,
Scott Cook
