Hi everyone,
I decided to add also few photos from my spring visit to Tatra mountains. I also plan to go for a bit longer than one day to Tatras in summer. I hope to see plenty of fantastic species and of course make hundreds of photos.

Photographing a meadow of very short-growing flowers like crocus or snowdrop is very difficult to do well, but you have managed it beautifully, Krzysztof. A couple of these would make a great front cover picture for a calendar. First class!

Thank you all for kind words. It wasn't easy to make these photos, because the sun shined only for about 1,5 hour just a minute before I went out from the bus. :] It had not been sun for about 4 days before I came and for about 2 days after I went back home. So I was SO LUCKY, that it is hard to describe. I was in seventh heaven! I run out from the bus, and lied flat on the ground. I did not matter that everyone were looking at me like on a weirdo. I was so happy to get my chance of photographing those Crocuses in sun. Also as I was told, they hadn't opened since that moment. So I had so huge luck to make some photos of them opened. Really it was a fantastic day.
Also I hope to share with you with some new photos at the beginning of July. (I hope I didn't make too much mistakes with the grammar. :D)

Okay my dearest friends. You better sit safely because you will have an extreme ride! I decided to show you in parts my photos, because there are so many species to show you, that it would be too much to put in one post, I think.
Firstly I would add that my train was late about 1,5 hour so from 9 planned hours in mountains I had only 7,5 hours left. I was really sad when I found that I was 15 minutes from the final goal. Also I couldn't make enough good and many photos of Viola alpina and Lloydia serotina. I took only few photos and thank goodness one of each was not blurred and enough good to show. Unfortunately I haven't seen Primula minima, which was growing only 15 minutes up. The whole track I made up in about 4 hours and down in not even 2 hours. I was running down, because I was afraid I will be late for the train. And I was right. I arrived just about an hour before it left, so I when to eat something because I didn't have any time on the track. Still it was a fantastic adventure. I was passing trough the snow I saw so many, many beautiful species. I was really in seventh heaven! I am afraid what will happen during my longer visit on the end of July... And now, let me present the photos!

I would love to live in a country that has views and plants like that.

Till now I was unable to go to Tatra moutains, because of the distance. It takes by train from Zary to Zakopane (the nearest coty to that National Park) about 14 hours. Also I have to change trains twice. From Warsaw I have a direct train and it takes about 10 hours, when it is not late.
I also wish to go there when the most of plants have seeds, so I could take some to germinate and propagate in future. There are so many beautiful plants that are very hard or if not impossible for ordinary grower to get.

Many years ago we visited a few times the Tatra (not in Poland, but in Slovakia), and now your pictures recalled nice days (but also with very much rain :'(). Thank you very much, Krysztof!

The pictures of the crocus meadow at the beginning are breathtaking, and those dark tipped Crocus scepusiensis are just so beautiful. Here's hoping you are able to share seed etc around..... something that beautiful deserves to be admired by as many people as possible!! 8) So many treasures in the rest of your photos too...... absolutely stunning!! :D Thank You!!

I will write shortly, because I am in Internet Cafe in Zakopane. Be sure that I will have seeds of Crocus scepusiensis to share with you. I am only afraid how I will show you 400 photos I made. :D I made much more of them, but there are at least 200 to show you. :) but that when I will be back home. Believe me, you will have what to look at. :D (Sorry for mistakes, I am in hurry.)

Hello everyone,
I got back. I did cleaning outside in my garden, inside in my room and in my computer with photos. I brought home 598 photos from which I put 363 photos on Photobucket. Have photos of about 80 species and I saw much more. Now it will be a very big problem... How will I show you everything and still not too much. :-\
Here is first part of photos. I finally got everything I wanted to see. This was really a fantastic trip. Still if I wanted to see everything flower I should visit Tatra Mountains at least again in the end of July and August.

Pedicularis verticillata - half parasite. In Poland it grow only in Tatra Mountains.

Linum extraaxillare - It could have more intensive colour, but still it is a great species. I cannot tell that it was much of it. I maybe saw 40-50 plants, not more.

Very, very nice. There's that Anemone narcissiflora again!! ::) Seems to be EVERYWHERE these days. ;D That Phyteuma orbiculare is fascinating, to put it mildly. Glorious colour!!
Also nice to go back to the first page of this topic and be reminded of those wonderful crocus pics. 8)

Krysztof, my family background is Czech father, Slovakian mother---and I have spent time in the Slovakian Tatras close to the village where my mother grew up near the Hungarian border. The next time I go there, I will remember to try to visit Ciemniak peak in the Polish High Tatras...
Your pictures make my heart ache with longing...a sincere thank you for going and for sharing what you experienced. Your love of the plants shines through your words and photos.

Kristl, what's the name of your mother's village? My wife is from a village just outside Roznava and when we're there with the children we often get a bus to Poprad and up to the Tatras via Stary Smocovec.

Martin...it's a small world, for sure. The old (1233) and tiny village is called Mnisek nad Hnilcom. Gelnica district; Kosice region.
I was last there with my mother and aunt in 2003, and spent a wonderful few days in the High Tatra. We were so happy to finally get to our destination in the village, after being turned back at the German-Czech border (we wanted to go via Prague) because Canadians needed a Visa--which I did not realize--- and having to then backtrack and enter through Bratislava.

Once again stunning phots. Did you camp? How many days did you spend walking/climbing in the mountains - was it hard or would older people be able to do it?
I did not camp. I was leaving in a tourist house. The price was really fantastic. I played 28 zl (not even10 Euro) per day and I had a bathroom. Also I had great locality, because I had about 10-20 minutes to most tracks. I were 6 nights in Tatras, that means I waked 7 days in the mountains. It was hard, but I had very fast rate. Also I liked to wake up at 9.00 or 9.30 and do on the track at 10. :) The harder tracks took me 7-8 hours with photographing. As you see I took hundreds of photos and that take time to do. Maybe not all tracks would be for elder people, but most of them for sure.

Thank you for this wonderful collection of pictures taken in a wonderful mountain region.It is now many years since I was in the Tatra Mountains but this brought back good memories. Get yourself rested now so that you can go back next year to show us more plants.

Wow i didnt knew Aconitum grew like half aquatic in streams. All i know about that plant is that its highly toxic. Even though its beautifull!

I have another part of photos from for you. After I visited the Tatras Botanical Garden in Slovakia I staid a wile to see what new is flowering. It is really fantastic that in the mountains there is always something flowering. I am sorry for the photos quality. I went there after I passed my anatomy exam and I had no digital camera. I was afraid my mother to send me Canon so I pleased her to post me Nicon. How could I go to the mountains without any camera. That would be a sin.

That part of mountain range I was wandering is called in Poland "Czerwone Wierchy" = "Red peaks" and the reason why they are called so is their red colour in the Autumn. They just started to change colours.

You have a great skill with your camera & manage to produce photo's that really bring out the best of the plants.
I read your earlier posting about the Tatras Botanical Garden with regret - I say regret because I was at Tatranska Lomnica about 4 weeks ago, but had no idea that it had a Botanical Garden :(
A Polish friend had brought us over onto the Slovak side and we went up the Cable Car into the High Tatras where we saw some lovely campanula tatrae in full flower - I liked this flower a lot and am going to try to grow it here in the south of England.
The photo's that you have been posting make me want to go back again soon!

Chris, when I saw: "Drogi Krzysztofie" I was amazed that you know a bit of Polish. :) But since you have Polish friends everything seem to be clear. It is a problem how to explain where in Tatrzanska Lomnica is that Botanical Garden, but if your friends ask anybody in Polish, everyone will tell you how to go there. It is about 200m from the bus station so it is hard not to find it. It isn't big ans usually botanical gardens are, I would say, that it is very tiny, but full of interesting species. I was told, that they start to sell plants about end of May. I do not know the exact date, but going there in the beginning of July is the best time to do that. They should have all species they list. I even thought about buying more plants there once and try to sell them. The prices they have are funny silly, and the quality of most of species is really nice.
Probably I will be able to buy some plants for the users, but I will have to make a list first and it won't be big amount. I would not like to carry over 30 kg of plants again, it was really exhausting.

I would like to be able to say that I know a lot more Polish - my wife and I have Polish lessons twice a week - but it is a very hard language to learn and it I think it will be a long time before we can have a conversation in Polish!

I wonder if Slodanellas makes crossings, because if they do, than it would explain why I had so many times problems to distinguis S. montana from S. hungarica. In some situations it was obvious looking on their leaves and flowers in some situations the flowers were more like S. montana, but leaves were totally not typical.

Undergrowth on the beginning of Koscieliska Valley, that was something I really haven't suspected to see. That Anemone ranunculoides, A. nemorosa, Primula elatior and Dentaria glandulosa all together made a perfect compositions of shapes and colours. And that amount of them, that is really unspeakable experience!

I am astonished at the colour of the viper .... so bright! Here our vipers ( adders) are quite dull brown and grey.... very hard to see in the heather :o This one from the Tatra is like a jewel.

Yeah, the Vipera berus was really beautiful. I have never seen this species in so bright and contrast colours. In my city I have found them much more dark, once I have found it brown, but I have never seen any one like those in Tatras. :) They were truly amazing. They were warming up in first warm, spring sun. They were very calm and fearful. They run away so fast, that I had real problems to make one good photo of them. The first one I tried to stop in one place, but it just run and run away, so I did not disturb it long and let it go.
In the past Vipera berus were very common in Zary but than in two years they extinct, I stopped seeing them. After four years finally (two years ago) I have found that one:

It is totally different animal.
This year if I will be able to go to Tatras again I plan to visit some new places in West Tatras, and make photos of some new species. Maybe I will go once or twice on the Slovakian site to see some species that do not grow in Poland any more, but they used to. I think, that I will have to go at least 3 more times to see everything what those mountains offer. :) But even than I will not resign of visiting that place. There always will be something new to explore. Next year if I will go there, I will try to concentrate on High Tatras where are also some unique species, that do not grow anywhere in other parts of those mountains. :)

Hello my DEAREST FRIENDS,
I come back to this topic again with loads of photos for you from Tatra Mountains. I was in the same places for third or more times now and still I find new fantastic species. I really love those mountains. :) Of course it would be impossible to see everything new each time, but it is really incredible, that in the middle of July you can still find the last Soldanella carpatica, Primula minima or Gentiana verna. Like before I went to West Tatras. I went all the same tracks I did the last time. All because of my cousin with who I was this year in the mountains. I wanted to show her all the magnificence of those mountains. I must say, that she was really and totally shocked how loads of great things one can find just on a singe track. Even my friend from Poland hardly beleive I find all the species on the track and I do not sheer off the track. But I really find all those plants only and just near the tracks. :) Unfortunately, not all tourists are like my and my cousin. They trample rare plants, they pick up flowers and throw them away when they fade, they destroy mushrooms without a reason. For the first time I found people smoking on the peaks, what was really horrible. You do to the mountains to breathe fresh and even herbs smelling air, not to smell cigarettes smoke. :( For the first time I was more sad than happy of what I have found. Because of that I have about 370 photos on my Photobucket album, I will show you photos in parts. Of course I will not show you all 370 photos, because that would be too much. Gladiolus imbricatus - it was the first plant that welcomed us in the Tatra Mountains. It was growing in front of grocery we made shopping every day. Fortunately, this one was not noticed by tourists, unfortunately some other nearer to the rad disappeared in two days... :(

Dactylorhiza maculata - instead of D. fuschii that one was really common. I found it almost in all valleys.

Pedicularis verticillata - still flowering in the lower parts and fully flowering on the peaks. I lobe that species. I decided to try to grow it on a Poa alpina, we will see if there will be any effects (I think about sowing the seeds).

Traunsteinera globosa - aahhh... :) On a part of 1 hour track I counted around 60 flowering plants. On the longer tracks there were hundreds of them. Unforgettable view.

Gymnadenia odorata - for the first time I found that species. From my observation it flowers about two weeks after Gymnadenia conopsea. Probably there are also crossings between those two species, but they are almost impossible to recognize. But I think I have found some more pale colour plants with that "tail" shorter... :)

Chamorchis alpina - very tiny orchid. I have found it when I almost touched ground with my camera. I photographed Astragalus and near by, low on the ground I see it. I was really paralysed with shock. I always thought that this plant is much bigger. But it is about 3-4 cm high. Hedysarum hedysaroides - I must write that I have bought that one in Tatrzanska Lomnica last year. I had seeds and now I have seedlings. :) I year or two I will be able to offer this plant to you. :) The same with Astragalus australis.

Gentiana frigida - that one was a real surprise. I thought it grows only in the High Tatras, but I was wrong. I have found three places near the track where were growing about 5-7 plants in each. As you can see it was still not flowering, but I intend to go to Tatras just to make a photo of this one. I really must see it flowering. :D For myself and for you of course.

Campanula trachelium - normally it is campanula violet/blue colour. There almost all plants of this species were pure white or with tiny accent of blue. Very interesting.

That is end of day one. Do not worry, I was 6 days in Tatra mountains so I will have that to show you. Each trip we took each day has something new to show. Lori, I know Hieracium auranticum very well, it is not that plant. I cannot find photo of this unknown plant in any of my books. It do not have any petals. It is not that it lost them, no, freshly opened flowers and they just didn't have any from the start. It is something else.
Robbin, my cousin did have great time with me. I cannot think about anyone else who would have showed here so many species, places, secrets and views... Gymnadenia odorata smells the same as Gymnadenia conopsea. Both smell very nicely and strongly during the day. I smelled both many times, I know. :D

Cliff, you are probably correct about the species. There is small problem, because on internet there were two plants for that name. The first one looked just the same as this one:

The second one I found in different place few days ago. Now here is the question. Which one is the species you wrote? Or maybe both are? Is it possible for a plant, to be so different wile being the same species? The first one had no petals. Is it possible that they will be produces some time after opening?
There is also another problem, because in my country grow:
Senecio integrifolius ssp. aurantiacus
Senecio integrifolius ssp. capitatus
I have no photos or drawings of those two species. Under the name Senecio capitatus I found on internet two different looking plants... I can say for sure that is it Senecio integrifolius, but which subspecies... Hah... that is the mystery.

Wile going down Whites Valley, we found a bouquet made of Dactylorhiza maculata and Gymnadenia conopsea. This sad view showed lack of manners and disrespect to nature, and simple stupidity of some tourists visiting these mountains.

Ranunculus altitatrensis is an endemic to the Tatras - similar I believe to ranunculus acris.
After long-term study (ca. 40 years) of the tetraploid populations of Ranunculus acris L. s.l. in the northern valleys of the Vysoké Tatry Mts and the diploid populations in other parts of Slovakia a conclusion has been drawn that a new species developed here. It has been formally described recently as R. altitatrensis Paclová & Murín. Full description, as well as karyological, taxonomic, ecological and phytogeographic evidence about this species is presented.

It was foggy, but rainless day. The temperature on the peaks was about 12*C and temperature felt was about 4* lower. It was really fantastic. I saw the track not more than 15 m in all directions. There were many tourists, although I could not see them. I felt like the were just mine. :)

This time not fog, but clouds. About 40 m lower fog was gone, clouds started to show themselves and sun blinked to my and my cousin from time to time. The weather went crazy. In one moment there was full sun in another it was dark from thick clouds.

Scabiosa lucida - it grows only in the mountains. If it was a bit smaller, it could be just right to a rock garden, but with that size, I do not recommend it.

Chris, more and more lovely photos of your trip - all almost to good to be true! However, I have to say that you have inspired me with your photo of:
Leontopodium alpinum - I have never seen more elegant clump than this one. Hard to describe, you have to feel it.
As I have tried growing this twice now in my rock garden and it sets seed perfectly but then the next year nothing - this year I have watched slugs and snails attack it and have moved my one plant to see if I can find the perfect spot but still it gets eaten. I would have thought the furry silver leaves were unappetising but I'm wrong - it's obviously a sought after delicacy ;D
Now from your photos I have another idea which is to push it tight into a rock crevice with no space at all for slugs to slumber and see if I can grow such an elegant clump as you have found. ;)

Robin, I had problems with slugs last year. Very serious problems. They almost ate my Dianthus nitidus, which effect was no flowers this year. They totally ate to roots my Tanacetum alpinum. :/ This year I decided I will regularly use poison. I know that it may not be an elegant method, but I cannot loose plants because of the slugs. Last year I picked them from my rock garden and moved to the forest. I made so much effort not to kill them and get rid of them for good. Unfortunately, when I was gone for one week and I came back I was terrified. Many plants were severely damaged and as I wrote T. alpinum was totally eaten. It tried to produce leaves, but they were regularly eaten and all plants died. This year I put one plant into a pot so that way I will not have to get the plant again.
This year when I use the poison I find many dead slugs on my rock garden. Much more then I expected. I have no idea where they hide or from where they come. I know one thing. This year they haven't destroyed a single plant. Species that were damaged last year grown up very well. Maybe next year I will see them flowering and get seed for propagation.
One day, when I will have bigger garden I want to have a crevice rock garden. I want it to look as natural as possible. I will plant there species which look more beautiful when they are smaller. :) Soon I will add next part of photos. :) I promise you more interesting species. :)

For 5 years I've been asked to go to Slovakia to visit friends and go to the Tatras. I really have to. Thanks for all the photos.

Fifth day I decided to go searching for a very tiny and rare orchid, Listera cordata. Of course I had planned whole trip day earlier. I went through Chochołowka Valley in about 90% of its length and I haven't found this species. I was looking very carefully for this plant whole 9 km without success... You will know more after watching photos.
Onobrychis montana - we started with finding this parasite. In the mountains most of them are still preparing to flower. Before making this photo I tried to make one of a fly looking like a bumble-bee. It was in white, yellow and black stripes. I have never seen anything like it before. Sorry, I cannot show it to you.

Vanessa cardui - this year we have a "plague" of this butterfly. In past years when I found one or two it was something fantastic, it was so rare in Poland. I do not know why, but this year is is the most common butterfly I see. I do not complain. I like it very much!

Lilium martagon - with those photograps is related funny history. I was making photos of this species. A group of tourists with a guide was nearby. The guide asked me if though I know what I am photographing. I answered (in polish of course): "Yes, Lilium martagon." The guide made a surprised face. :) Probably the very first tourist who he met that know what is photographing... After that the guide asked his group: "Does anyone know what is this species?" Some tourist answered: "Lilium...." They heard when I was saying the species, but they couldn't remember the hard thing. In polish it is: Lilia złotogłów (in loose translation: gold-head). Than the guide asked his group again: "Can I pick the flower?" No one answered, so he did: "Of course not. It is protected by the law, because it grows in a National Park. But outside the National Park..."; "... you also cannot pick it.", I added. He made more surprised face and said: "You can." I said: "Fortunately, you cannot, because it is protected species". Guide opposed: " No it isn't". Than I: "Unfortunately, it is and even strictly protected, so one one can." The guide felt endangered by me and resigned: "I will not bet on that, because I do not like to loose.", and run away with his group as fast as he could. :D That was terrible, what knowledge guides share with tourists. If I weren't there, he would have allowed a quite large group of people to pick a protected species outside a National Park...

A bug. :D I am sorry, I didn't have enough time to identify this one. It was lying eggs. Some tourists were afraid of it very much, because of its "sting". But it is not a sting, it is used to lay eggs not to protection. There is also one that is fake, just to scare animals, and those less informed people. ;-)

Usnea sp. - hard to identify. I haven't got sure which one it is. It is the tiniest one, not those big, and easy to see. This lichen grows only in pure, crystal clear places, where is non chemicals are any pollution. It is the most sensitive of all lichen. That proves that this place is probably intact by pollution.

Wile going down - it is almost impossible, but there were hardly no flowers. This parts of Tatra Mountains are acid, there is no lime in the soil. It is amazing how those two conditions make the environment almost deserted by flowers. I have found 7 Campanula alpina. What is that in compare to hundreds, which I passed wile going on Ciemniak? But the sight were fantastic. The same mountains, but I felt like in totally different place.

Listera cordata - when we were going back, when I was sure we will not find anything. I have accidentally found this species 3 meter from the place when we took a different track. :) Amazing. If only I made few steps forward earlier, I would have found it than. It is very, very tiny orchid. I thought it to be about twice as big. The plants had about 4 cm in hight and their leafs were smaller than my finger nails.

This photo is artificially made with assistance of my cousin. She borrowed her feet. I decided to make one like that to show how many mountains plants end. Under someone's shoe. When I was making photos standing carefully on rocks, and not on the plants, a curious lady came to see what I was photographing. She didn't stepped on rock, no, she walked through plants... That was pitiful view... I didn't say anything, because I knew, that there might be wore effect, and she might pick a flower to show me that I do nothing about it. That is sad, but that hos the reality looks like.

On holiday in Wales at the end of May we too encountered a 'plague' of 'Painted Ladies' (the English name for Vanessa cardui) There were literally thousands in our camping field, blown in on the winds from the south. It was the same everywhere for a few days. I hear that it is a 'good year' for them, must have been a good winter down south too. Now we have the next generation appearing in our garden, 250 miles from our Welsh camp site and you have them in Poland. I suppose it must be the same all across Europe.

Chris, your impressions of the Tatra Mountains are very special as are the plants you find to show - I wonder who inspired you to be so passionate about Nature? It is a rare gift at your age and I think somehow you should help spread the word so others can be inspired too! My comment about Tourists is that without them the local economies could not survive - this is the situation here in the mountains in Switzerland - so surely the most important thing is, as you say, to inform people through enthusiasm, to increase their knowledge & understanding of the flora and fauna of a region and therefore enjoyment of going on walks in these spectacular landscapes that everyone should experience at least once in a lifetime :)

Chris, I was in the Tatras in '95 and in spite of the rain, enjoyed it very much. Only 1 lift at that time so a lot of walking up to ridges and down into valleys with picturesque mountain huts offering home-made soup and delicious meals. However, there was only a single Flora and it was in Polish - so thank goodness for scientific names! Are there any others now and with translations?
I have thoroughly enjoyed the pictures - you saw more plants than I did.

Weird Campanula hubride or form. This was only that spot where I found this Campanula. I do not think it is a specific species, but a selection, that is looking different from the other one in that place. For example the first one, growing in crevice was the main type growing there.

Chris, wonderful to have more of your super photos.
The only worry with the use of Photobucket is that at some point they may be lost.... this has happened with another Forumist some time. That would mean we lost the pictures from your superb thread, so perhaps it will be even better if in future you load the pix by the ordinary way from your computer in stead of photobucket ;)??!! It wouldmean that you are not able to post so many pix in one post, of course, but it will also mean that the page loads much faster for those people on dial-up or slow interent connections.

I will never delete those photos from my photobucket account. It is good that I can edit my posts even after very long time. That allows me to make changes in my photobucket and still be able to edit posts, so that the photos won't disappear. :) I think, that I have found almost everything attractive in West Tatras, it is time to go now to High Tatras and find such as species like Saxifraga retusa, Saxifraga nivalis and who know what else. :) I am sure the landscapes will be outstanding there.
To all others. I have so much pleasure walking in Tatras, breathing fresh air, seeing all those great species and of course making photos for you so that you can experience at least a part of that pure beauty.
Mark, so you have no other option, than visit your Slovakian friend. I am sure you will visit Tatranska Lomnica and its Botanical Garden, where you will buy loads of Tatra plants. They have really funny low prices. IF you decide to go in summer, than we might even meet, and than I will be pleased to show you the area I know the best. :)

Hello everyone,
it is hard to show anything new, especially when I almost found everything what was to find in Tatra Mountains. There are still few species I haven't found yet, but hopefully one day I will manage to see them.
This year I also was in the mountains, but I am not sure whether I will go there next year too. I also had to slow down with uploading photos on my Photobucket account, because it began to get full and I need it for other photos as well. I thought that it would be a good time to see something else. Probably I will got to Augustow search for rare and unique nature there.
For now I have some new photos for you. As always there will be some new species I found, some new photos I made of the old ones. I hope you enjoy them.
I will start my photo journey as it was in real time and the plants I fund each day on each track. I started everything with finding a single plant of Malaxis monophyllos (a good start) near my favourite bank not far from my accommodation. I have never seen it there, but it isn’t anything strange. This plant has about 5-7 cm high and when it does not flower it can be mistaken with many species for example Maianthemum bifolium, which also grows in many areas of Tatra Mountains. It was a good time for this species to flower, so when I found one I started to look after others in different Valleys. All will be shown later.

Because, I already photographed most of Tatras species I didn’t waste time for making photos of those I already had photos. This is Androsace obtusifolia from the Ciemniak peak. I searched for it some time, but I knew it was right time for it. I found maybe 20 flowering plants. It is very rare plant in Tatra Mountains and I was happy finally to see it in the nature. Also thanks to Giles help I got this species seeds and I have this year 4 fine seedlings.

Senecio capitatus – I fund I nice population of this one between Kondracka Kopa and Malolaczniak. But still it was about 30 flowering plants. I also managed to buy this species in Tatranska Lomnica this year so I can also grow it. We shall see how it will go in lowlands. :)

Dactylorhiza fuschii/traunsteineri?? – to be honest I think it is the first one, but from my information in this place also grows the second species too. The problem is that the first one, wile being “starve” form can look like the second one. But it was a magical place. A cold water flowing through sphagnum moss. I was moving there on bare feet. It is hard to express that pleasure. I found there many interesting species. It was a real discovery this year. I was searching for Lingularia sibirica, unfortunately it probably extinct there.

Aah, yes. A mystic fog, well said Armin. It was really like some magic place when that dense fog appeared. In one moment you see the track, the people in front of you and another second they were gone. Just some sounds still reminded me they were there. Sometimes I hid nearby the tracks, so that I would not hear no sound. Everything was gone except of you and the mountains. You could feel their energy. It was a middle of a day and still it was grey like in the evening, quiet and peaceful. I could feel like I was the only human there. Freed from everyday problems, severed the connection with reality. Yes, that was something magical. Total silence. Surrounded by immaculate nature. I wish I could live that state again...

Bielovodska Dolina (Valley) in Slovakia - I took whole day track to the Slovakian site to find one very rare species that I knew was growing in Poland, but I didn't know where. As the climbing started after quite boring 2 hours of ver fast march, the trip turned into very nice discovery. I wished to go to the Polish Hight Tatras, but with thunders hitting the peaks all around and heavy raining I decided not to risk my life. :D

Geum reptans - after flowering it looks even more attractive than I thought. It young seeds group in kind of flame-shape fruit. Great!

Saxifraga bryoides - I recognized it, but unfortunately it wasn't flowering. I found one, unopened flower. This bad saxifraga is a real nightmare to make it flower. I didn't manage to do that yet.

Callianthemum coriandrifolium - This is what it was all about. :D Just enjoy this beauty. The whether was really ugly, it was cloudy and foggy so the white flowers of this plant are over shined.

The thread should be conserved, it is fascinating. Soldanella species cross, but the crosses are not fully fertile.
The images probably belong to Soldanella carpatica. You should always check the glands on petioles. In Soldanella carpatica the glands are nearly sitting, in other species occurring there stalked. http://math.muni.cz/~niederle/solpage.html (http://math.muni.cz/~niederle/solpage.html)

Such wonderful, moody and dramatic images from the Tatra mountains, Chris, and beautifully composed shots of the plants you found on your way in their habitats. Looking down on the frozen lake and up to the peaks with alpines nestling everywhere you give a real impression of the place that is fascinating and totally enjoyable, thanks.

seeing the recent posts gave me a chance to look at the entire thread AGAIN (as I have done a few times).
thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to share these with us (as your work is, i am sure) extremely demanding.
for those of us planning similar adventures in the future, could you let us know your favorite spot or hike with name of place etc....so we could conceivably find it on our own?
also i would love to know the name of your favorite accomodation and location when you go there.
and i also wonder if the thalictrum minus you posted is really that species?
