Seen at Harlow carr
« on: May 23, 2022, 09:30:26 AM »
Saw this in the alpine house at Harlow Carr on Saturday but no label and no idea - even from the RHS guy.
Suggestions were - Heuchera or Saxifraga fortunei.
Does any one recognize this beauty?

A plant which I discover is also called  the Hi No Mai Velvet Saxifrage - which certainly relates to the foliage of the  plant  seen at Harlow Carr.......

I don't know the Japanese cultivar, but this looks an awful lot like the most common alpine species in Yunnan: Saxifraga rufescens. It's spring flowering, bone hardy, and usually has red markings on foliage as well as furry, red pedicels.

I got it from Edrom so it is possible that Harlow Carr got it from them too.
