I am half German and all I can say is hello and goodbye, so Shelagh you would do better than I would.  Should have listened to my mum when she tried to teach me German  ::)

Good timing! I was actually looking at his site a month ago and wondering if I could see a preview of the inside. I took German when I was in college but I've lost 99 percent of it. :-[

Maybe of interest to Hepatica fans: Andreas Händel published a very nice article on new Hepatica selections and hybrids in the January 2014 issue of Germany's best gardening journal "Gartenpraxis". Apart from a number of beautiful photographs there is a list of new and very special selections of Hepatica which Händel considers to be the most exciting:

Hepatica nobilis var. nobilis (single): 'Blaue Elfe', 'Feuerkäfer', 'Fliederkind', Frühlingslied', 'Giselle', 'Indigo Blue Strain', 'Odette', 'Schneeballschlacht', 'Schneesturm JP', 'Tausendschön'

Hepatica nobilis var. nobilis (filled): 'Anderson's Dream', 'Maria Theresia' (extremely sought after since Christian Kress's mother plants were destroyed by a dredger... :-X), 'Marion', 'Rote Glut JP', 'Schwanensee', 'Sternenglanz', 'Supernova'

Hepatica transsylvanica: 'Blumenstadt Erfurt', 'Düvelsblau JP', 'Harvington Beauty', 'Melanie JP', 'Schwanensee', 'Sternenglanz', 'Supernova'

Hepatica x media: 'Avatar', 'Blaue Stunde', 'Blue Jewel', 'Mondsteinsonate'

Hepatica x euroasiatica: 'Gletscherschnee', 'Prof. Friedrich Hildebrandt', 'Rötgesbütteler Röschen'

Other Hybrids: 'Dark Star' (H. nobilis var. japonica x H. transsylvanica), 'Milstream Merlin' (H. acutiloba x H. transsylvanica), 'Pink Pearl' (H. yamatutai x H. transsylvanica)

including the name of the plant, its origin and a short description. Of course, Händel's own selections are rather prominent - but I think rightly so.

Mouth watering cover picture! But my German is even less extented than Angies. Will there be a Swedish version :)? If not, I could do with an English version. ARe there any plans about it,  Andreas?
Denmark´s "Mrs Hepatica", Gunhild Paulsen,  is coming to Sweden to give a talk in March, I am really looking forward to it, although she is much into the Japanese ones. Impossible to grow outdoor in my region.

Some good news for those of you who don't speak German: Händel's book will appear in English, too! I just talked to Andreas Händel on the phone and he says translation is in progress - John Massey of Ashwood Nurseries will read the proofs. However, it will probably take a couple years. Therefore, he will treat the English Edition as a 2nd edition to the German one and include new information.

Good news! I have no problem waiting. There are so many other interesting books to read meanwhile. I just ordered one about the high alpine ecology. And 2nd edition, it is even better...

I received Andreas Händel's Hepatica book by mail today and just spent a couple of enjoyable hours with it. It is very large and doubles as an expert monograph as well as a coffee table book.

Händel's style of writing is very enjoyable as well as deeply informed. It is obvious: Hepaticas are his life and are in his thoughts even in his dreams. The book contains a wealth of information about liverworts, the contents covering chapters about:
- History of Hepatica cultivation (with lots of stories)
- Description
- Species and cultivars
- Cultivation and care
- Good and bad neighbours
- Propagation
- Breeding and breeders
- Diseases and pests
- Botany

The first and the last pages are portraits with large and very beautiful photographs of different cultivars.
Lovers of Japanese Hepaticas might feel that these are insufficiently covered, but then the sheer numbers here probably made it necessary to portray a selection.

My one and only criticism is the lack of legends, so you need to search the text in order to find an explanation.

That's made the wait for the english 2nd edition so much harder!

Lovely illustrations, though. Can't vouch for the text. ;)

What plants are bad neighbours to Hepatica?
Title: Re: Hepatica Book by Andreas Händel
Post by: Anne Repnow on February 10, 2014, 06:24:24 PM
Andreas Händel lists as "bad neighbours":
- Ajuga reptans
- Asperula odorata
- Buglossoides purpurocaerulea
- Convallaria majalis
- Duchesnea indica
- Geranium macorrhizum, G. x magnificum etc.
- Glechoma hederacea
- Hedera helix
- Lamium maculatum etc.
- Pachysandra terminalis
- Vinca minor and V. major
- Waldsteinia geoides (I think he means ternata)

All plants that weave a thick carpet...

Thank you.
I thought it might have to do with that some plants dislike each other because of some chemicals or such, but I understand how some neighbours might run over the hepaticas. :)

Can't wait for the English version.

I have a German nephew-in-law but it would probably take longer than 2 years to get the text translated...especially as he has no interest in hepaticas. ::)

I have 'Millstream Merlin' in the garden & one by one the fat flower buds are being nipped off.....You wait ALL YEAR and then this happens  >:( >:(

Thankfully a piece broke away a couple of years ago I managed to get it to grow elsewhere in the garden & it has two fat buds showing colour, so here's hoping.............

Any news yet about the English version of the book? How long might "two years" be in a translator´s mind? It is just a little more than nine months since we got the good news about an English version...

It has now gone 4 years
If no plans of English version, is the German version still available?

Even with basic knowledge of German would be very hard to understand. I tried once a book, translating with a dictionary almost every other word; painfully slow and non-enjoyable.

See reply 7 earlier in this thread. Do we have a German speaker who would be prepared to contact Herr Handel to see if any progress has been made? Or perhaps if anyone knows John Massey well they might be prepared to contact him and see if he is aware if progress has been made (or hasn’t as the case might be).

In another field of interest my husband and I make books in German, English and Dutch. The problem is not only the translation but also to find a publisher in England or America. Printing conditions there are extremely different from Germany and even German publishers who sell overseas are not really present in these countries.

If you really wish to have an English version you should first find a publishing company in England or America that can announce interest to the German publisher. Following my experience this is the most promising way.

Best wishes
Hannelore

Has anyone tried to use an online copy of a book; with something like Google translate? If it works it might be easier to persuade the publisher to put a copy online.

My local Chiltern group of the AGS had a recent talk on hepaticas by Samantha Hopes

She worked for John Massey at Ashwood Nurseries for 5 years and is now "www.hopesgardenplants.co.uk"

Very good talk. Recommended if you are interested in breeding etc.

Lots of good ideas, maybe someone from England will take initiative.
I don't have connections but I doubt any publishing company in NA would be interested in the deal; not enough potential customers interested in the subject, that's for sure.

Brian - Google translate works for small texts, I imagine it would be a bother to use it for a book. Then, German language has a complicated grammar (in my opinion), I can only imagine the twisted meaning of phrases.

Just a thought... there is one North American publisher that might be a candidate for taking on an English edition.... Timber Press http://www.timberpress.com/ (http://www.timberpress.com/)

I wouldn't know who to contact or how to introduce the subject to them but it might be worth a try.

Timber Press is headquartered in Portland where I live.  The editor Tom Fischer has been pretty active in the local Hardy Plant Society where I know some folks, including the office administrator.  I could probably finagle an introduction but I'm not sure how much good that would do without a copy of the Hepatica book.  Since my German is damned poor I don't really want to buy the book.  I guess this is a round about way of saying if someone wants to loan me the book I'd see if I could interest Timber Press in it.  The book would have to be mailed to me and then I'd mail it back (after drooling over the pictures).  At 60 plus Euros you can bet I'd insure it for the return journey.'

It would also be a good idea to make sure the author has not already approached Timber Press.

Anyway if anyone is interested we can talk further.

Thanks for posting the link to an online copy of the book. It's gorgeous and would be totally worth having if it were in English.  I have a friend I'm going to send the link too. She's gone crazy for hepaticas (and snowdrops).

Someone needs to contact the author (does he speak English?) and find out if an English translation is still in the works.  For all we know it's coming out soon.  Or it could be he couldn't find a publisher in which case we wouldn't want to contact places he's already tried.  Contacting the author is the first step.  Anyone have an in with him?  Can anyone provide an email?  Speaking of places to try has anyone contacted the AGS?  They also publish books and this would be right up their alley.  I am a member but I'd guess in person contact would be more effective.

Koko Koreda lives in the US and has offered to lend me her book to approach Timber Press but I won't be taking her up on her offer until the author and the AGS have been contacted. I think it would be better to show Timber Press an actual copy of the book.

You'd think he'd want his book translated into English.  I'm sure it was a labor of love but still a few bucks or pounds here or there never hurt anything.  I know Koko said she'd tried to contact him and never got a response either.

Rather frustrating.  The book looks lovely and like it probably has valuable information.

The book, as original (ie. printed in German) is offered for sale on Ashwood Nursery’s
Web Site and, as far as I know, no attempt has been made to produce an English version. If my German was substantially better than it is ( mainly non-existent) I would be asking the Author a number of questions viz:

Do you have plans to publish at some time an English version?
Does any legal copyright arrangement on the work rest with you as Author or with a third-party publisher.?
If not would you be interested in other parties preparing an estimated cost of producing an English version on your behalf?
Would you expect to receive a royalty payment from any sales so produced?

Thomas

Following this advice I asked Andreas Händel today (in Knechtsteden/Galanthus event). He told me that an English version of his book was in progress already. It will take some time until it will be released because he plans to  use 'crowdfunding'.
Sorry - I don't understand the procedure mentioned and there was little time to discuss in detail because Mr. Händel was somewhat busy because
a lot of customers were waiting on his stand.
I guess there will be some information available next time.

Many thanks for doing that Gerd, very helpful. "Crowdfunding" is a method of raising funds through various Social Media platforms by advertising that funds are sought, in this case to fund the production of an English version of the book, and people are able to subscribe amounts that they choose. Best explanation I can give and perhaps not a very good one!

Since some of us have nothing to do with Social Media I hope information on what, if anything, is happening, on this matter is fed here so that the
""Unbelievers"" who might wish to contribute are aware.
Title: Re: Hepatica Book by Andreas Händel
Post by: Hannelore on February 16, 2019, 08:10:46 PM
Since I've taken part in crowdfundings already several times, I can explain a little bit. In the www there are several "crowdfunding platforms" where you can become a member, that costs nothing.  I'm member of Kickstarter (worldwide, mainly America) and Startnext (for the German-speaking area). People who want to collect money via crowdfunding announce their projects there.

So we first should know which platform Andreas Händel is using. I'll see him next sunday in  Mannheim and I'll ask him.

Usually you can choose how much you wish to invest and depose a credit card number or bank account, which is stored safely by the plattform organization (who takes a little fee for its service). The announcer has to define a goal for his request, a certain sum he wishes to reach. Only if this sum is signed, you have to pay (and you're informed by E-Mail). If not, the whole project is gone.

The contributions are in steps and except the lowest you always get a little reward, f.i. a bookmark, a postcard with a related photo or a whole book. Surely the rewards don't have the same worth as your donation - the goal is to collect money, not to sell something.

You can inform yourself on www.kickstarter.con (http://www.kickstarter.con) or any other platform (some are specialized f.i. on sports or arts or . . .)
