Lancea tibetica sowing
« on: December 16, 2010, 06:55:11 PM »
I received some seeds of  Lancea tibetica today, after being on my wishlist for a couple of years.
So I was wondering if anyone here has experience with sowing this plant? If so, what would be the best way to sow these seeds?

I wouldn't know the best way of germinating these seeds, but I got good germination last year just by plunging ahead without information, and hoping for the best.  I chilled the pots in the cold room for 3 weeks, and then germination started in 4 days after they were brought into room temperature.  (Given the brevity of the chilling period, I sort of doubt that any chilling was actually necessary.)

The seedling were planted out in a tufa bed.  I'm eagerly awaiting spring to see if they survived.

I bought a plant in the spring. In late summer, I shared the plant in two, one for my sister and one for me. It remains to see if it will survive until spring.
A friend has had Lancea in a few years, she says that it grows well, but is difficult to get into flower.

Many thanks Lori and Ulla,

I'll go ahead and sow some at room temp and give some a chilling.

Lori, did you surface sow them or did you cover the seeds with grit or soil? I was thinking of surface sowing them since they are dustlike.

It should not be too difficult since it is said to be quite invasive - pls be careful.
It is also said to be very shy.
Cheers

Thanks for the warning about the invasiveness, Göte.
I didn't know it was that shy flowering!

I surface-sowed the seeds without covering (as I usually do with very fine seeds).

I didn't know it was that shy flowering!
That has been reported independently by two Swedish growers but it might have climatic reasons
