Monocarpic Meconopsis
« on: June 16, 2011, 03:41:10 PM »
Flowering now - Meconopsis paniculata 'Ghunsa Form'  a rather small plant with small flowers.  I did not think it was big enough to flower this year.

I did not think Meconopsis wallichii (white form - hopefully) was going to flower this year but two rosettes are showing flower spikes.
It's amazing how fast some flowers appear when you take your eye off the plants for a few days  ;).

Meconopsis wallichii has flowered at last.  One plant did not grow very tall and the flowers are deformed.  The other kept growing to well over 6 feet and as I am only 5 foot 3 taking a picture was tricky.  The first one is the day before it opened.  When it opened it was facing into my brother's garden next door so I had to take it against my house roof.  The following day it was facing my way and I was able to get a picture against blue sky and managed to avoid the electricity pole and bits of my brother's house and greenhouse which often form a background to my pictures.  The flower only lasted 2 days but there are plenty more to come.

Meconopsis wallichii is still reaching for the sky.  Three flowers open today.  I was a bit worried earlier that the wind and heavy rain would snap the top off but it has elongated more and no longer looks top heavy.
The foliage is getting very spotty. ?botrytis or some other fungus.  My other meconopsis do have spots on the leaves but wallichii is very bad.

What do you mean 'slow down when passing', Angie?  If you are passing, stop and come in!

Meconopsis wallichii is still flowering.  I hope it has set seed though I may need a stepladder to collect it  ;D.
The short one sometimes has white flowers and sometimes pink picotee ones.

I chopped down Meconopsis wallichii today.  It measured 9 feet from the base to the top of the highest seed pod.

Two Meconopsis wallichii flowering, both a lot taller than me, but no blue sky to picture them against this year.

No blue sky but still lovely flowers, Roma.  Chunky chaps, aren't they?
