There has been a lot of interest in the Dryad Golds, and requests for them to be released for sale. As some of you will know, I have been trialling some of the varieties with friends and have been pleased by their reports, and the performance of the plants here in my garden. I think they are really special (doesn't every mother think that about their children?).
I have now named and registered some, and I hope the first 2 or 3 varieties will be available this summer, but there will be a VERY limited supply until I can bulk them up further.
After a huge amount of debate and consultation (you know who you are) the first releases will be on ebay next month (seller name: dryadzny), and I hope to have some in my summer list. Some customers have also asked that I auction some of my bulbs on ebay, because they can't be quick enough off the mark for the rarer things in my list, which usually go within half an hour of the list being uploaded.
There will be a maximum of 5 bulbs available this summer, of 3 varieties:
Dryad Gold Medal =clone 5
Dryad Gold Sovereign = clone 6
Dryad Gold Bullion = clone 8
Complying with requests to simplify my numbering system for my yellow seedlings, I've now got a simple consecutive number system. Please will those people who have been trialling for me ask me for the new numbers/names for their clones?
I hope there will be a short article in the International Rock Gardener next month introducing the new names.

I can confirm that the names and pictures of Anne's golden snowdrops will be published in the IRG for June 2015, to be online at the end of that month

Some new, super rare and delightful 'Yellows'...what wonderful news :P
All backed with the years of trialling and reliability assurance of Anne!
These will be going on Ebay at the end of June, is that correct Anne?
I have already loosed the 'Kraken' to make sure he bids, ;D with the small number available, relying on the list is just too chancy! I don't like using Ebay to buy drops BUT with the guarantee of source, it is a must ;D Thanks for the Ebay ID, could you give us a heads up when you are listing?

As you imply, there are some strange goings-on on Ebay, but when the provenance is secure it's a much happier prospect.

These will be top targets as they probably won't be available at Myddelton next year as Anne does not attend. That means I cannot even rely on the 'Young Gazelle' to deliver on the day ;D

Well, we have had a huge diamond caper this year, it looks like the 'Great Bullion Job' is on the way ;D We proably need to inform George Osbourne that the 'Propensity to Save' will increase in the short term ;D

Remind me, Anne, all the Dryad Gold Group derives from Wendy's Gold crossed with a (the same) nivalis Sandersii? Which was the male parent or did you do the cross both ways? I think you have told us this before (therefore I'm not trying to get trade secrets out of you).

It's no secret, Alan. The cross was 'Wendy's Gold' (seed) x sandersii 'Lutescens' (pollen). Haven't had much luck repeating the cross since, so I was very fortunate that time.

Thanks Anne and Maggi. Interesting to know that there was somehow an element of good fortune in that original cross. And as we might well not achieve the same good fortune ourselves should we try, we should start saving up for our own share of Anne's.

Hi Anne, during your extensive testing of the new yellows, have you seen them thrive in 'sunny' Scotland? A fellow Scottish member of the yellow team asked me as she has had problems with yellows in the Dominions ;D and wondered if these were the answer...
I naturally told her Gold Sovereign was more a Southern snowdrop ;D ::) ::)

Surely if you want a Scottish yellow snowdrop then 'Elizabeth Harrison' is your answer?
Most nivalis Sandersii Group snowdrops hale originally from the wild snowdrop population in Northumberland - which is not too far south of the border.
The yellow plicatus snowdrops come from near me in Cambridgeshire or even further south so perhaps they are too nesh for Scotland?

Yes, some yellows are not too good here, which has put me off them. Anne's place in Yorkshire is not exactly tropical, so the Dryad Golds are well bred for poor weather!

I've heard nesh mentioned when I lived in Yorkshire Maggi, so I don't think it's a southern thing. I think it means no good or something like that, I'm sure Alan will correct me if I've got it wrong ;D

'Nesh' was a regular term when I lived in Cheshire. It means someone who is susceptible to cold. I've not heard it mentioned in relation to plants.

Sassenach is a Scot's Gaelic-derived word which literally means Saxon. It was originally used primarily to refer to non-gaelic speaking lowland Scots but now is used to refer to "Southrons" (itself an almost redundant Scots word which was borrowed by Tolkien).

Just returned from our hols in Canada. We had a great trip, but it's nice to get back to chilly Yorkshire! And the bulbs all went dormant while we were away!

As promised, I have looked at your total list on the IRG. Having been drawn to the 'Dark Side' by 'Darth Ellis' I have become interested in the smaller drops, following him singing the praises of Philippe Andre Meyer. I have tasked the acquisitions team with 'Dryad Gold Bullion' but also like the look of 'Gold Nugget'.
I know it is difficult but do you have any feel for when that beauty will be likely to appear, are we a few years away?

Hi Ingrid - it will be this weekend! I've been hectically chipping daffs and 'drops (still ongoing) but have saved some chubby bulbs for ebay. I plan to list the first one on Saturday.

It is indeed very interesting Maggi 8) It is also difficult not to conclude that buyers are getting a very good deal, with regard to price, on these varieties compared to other yellows that have been offered :o

A very dull grey day here meteorologically BUT brilliant yellow sunshine supplied by Anne Wright and Dryad Nursery.

After much chivvying, I’ve decided, at last, to offer our final two named cultivars in the Dryad Gold series, following a number of inquiries about the larger clones. These two varieties, Dryad Gold Standard and Dryad Gold Sceptre, bring the total Dryad Gold family to 10 named varieties, which is half the number of clones we grow.
Also looking good just now, potfuls of Dryad Gold Bullion and Nugget. Never a show when you need one... ::)

Thanks for the link. I thought there was a pinned thread on this board where Anne demonstrated making snowdrop crosses. I followed her protocol for my early crosses, tho' I have now changed to collecting pollen on black plastic teaspoons and 'encouraging' the pollen out with an electric toothbrush!

You stated somewhere that you were releasing some snowdrops that took you nine years to develop.
Have you kept track of how many seeds you sowed to finally arrive at named ones?

I'm sorry I didn't reply to this, must have missed it.
An example, Dryad Blizzard came as a second generation seedling from seeds you sent me, Diane, of poculiform elewesiis in 2008 (7 seeds). In 2014 I recorded 5 clones, none poculiform,which I crossed together. 6 seeds were sown in 2013. I didn't record how many germinated, but one of them was the beautiful poculiform which I registered as Dryad Blizzard in 2022.
The Dryad Golds - sown in 2006, I didn't record how many seeds were sown either (it was a long time ago!) When they first flowered in 2010, there were about 20 clones, of which the first was registered in 2015, and the first sold in 2016.
