I have seen Monotropa hypopitys locally with the red stalks and unopened flowers.
I have never seen it open or turned white; and didn't recognize it as belonging to Ericaceae. Now I will try to collect some and grow it with my other woodland Ericaceae. It grows in several locations less than a mile from me.
