I would be lovely to see these under trees here in Auckland, but for the fact that there is an ever increasing weed-free circle of bare earth under each one.

That is a fantastic photo, while I appreciate crocus it is nothing to seeing them in there native habitat.

On February 10th 2012 I posted a picture of a plant that I had labelled C.reticulatus. Discussion then ensued as to whether this was true C.reticulatus or not, other species being nominated. It was agreed that I would examine the bulbs and report back.

On Feb 8th 2012 I posted a picture of what I had as C. olivieri istanbulensis.

Discussion followed, and it was pointed out that it was highly unlikely to be true ssp. istanbulensis, as this was very rare in cultivation. Janis Ruksans kindly posted a picture showing a comparison between ssp. olivieri and ssp. istanbulensis, the difference being that the latter had some reticulation of the tunic towards the top of the corm. I agreed to check the corm tunics later which I have done today. It is apparent that my plants are not ssp. istanbulensis. Whether they are ssp.olivieri remains to be determined ( although the flower parts indicated this, the corm tunic is somewhat entire at the moment).
As I mentioned at the time the original stock came from a famous Botanic Gardens, through a third party, to me. The third party keeps a meticulous collection of crocus with detailed notes, so there could not possibly have been a mix up. I have been in touch with him and we will remove the ssp. istabulensis labels.
Just goes to show that if you're keen to have the correct name on your plants, always check out the distinguishing features for yourself. Even famous plants people make mistakes
