Odontoglossum question
« on: August 22, 2011, 07:39:53 PM »
Hi,

I inherited this plant as Odontoglossum pulchellum. Without getting into the debate about whether odontoglossum or oncidium, those of you who know the plant, know what I mean.

I don't think this is Odm pulchellum. The foliage is all wrong, should be narrow and elongated, the pseudobulbs are also too fat and as for the flower, it's pretty but it doesn't look to me like what it says on the label.

Any thoughts? it could, of course, be a hybrid. >:(

Hello Maren,

It is not a hybrid but rather a close relative, Odontoglossum pendulum. The accepted name however is Cuitlauzina pendula.

Maren i think it is maybe a hybrid with Lemboglossum cervantesi or rossi,i like you think the pseudo bulbs are wrong as well as the leaves.

Thank you both. Given the choice, I think Ill accept David's answer. I have always wanted a Cuitlauzina pendula, killed two, and this is a welcome addition to my tropical collection. This plant looks quite healthy and I hope to keep it that way.

Pity I didn't know what it was; I should have let the flower spike hang naturally. In my ignorance, I staked it half way up, as one does. When the flowers developed fully, the stem broke, being rather too slim for the weight of flowers. I'll know better next time.
