SRGC 90th Anniversary Talks 2023
« on: February 02, 2023, 05:45:16 PM »
SRGC 90th Anniversary Talks - Free to All!!
Online via Zoom
Link to be given later

The SRGC was founded in 1933, so in 2023 we celebrate our 90th Anniversary. Among the events the SRGC will be hosting will be four online Zoom Talks and the details of the first is shown below.[Details of the second talk, and two talks, which will take place after the summer, will be published later.]

Saturday 11th February 2023 - 7pm GMT for 7.15pm start

“101 other uses for an SRGC plant” with Sue Gill

We often choose plants for our gardens today based on their flowers, foliage or shape, their scent or autumn colour; but many of our plants have a history of human use stretching back many years, even millennia. In this talk we’ll explore some of these other uses with a particular emphasis on plants from Scotland or common in Scottish gardens. Discover unusual ice cream, which plant has the most common names and the oldest wooden tool known, as we look at the practical, the medical and the magical uses of our plants. You’ll never look at your garden plants in the same way again!

Sue Gill is a long term SRGC Member, who performs great service as assistant to the Membership Secretary - she is a dedicated, if sometimes frustrated grower - and this talk promises to be both fun and informative.

Maggi,

You are 8 hrs ahead of us; and 11 AM is very difficult! Is there any chance that the Zoom talks can be recorded so that we westerners can also watch them at 7 P.M?

Thank you Sue, for the wonderful talk last night. Very interesting and funny, I really enjoyed it.

About primroses as 'mayflowers'; I took this photo at Rubha Hunish, the northern tip of Skye, the first week of June 2016. It was basically at sea level, but on a north facing slope. I do not know if 2016 had a particularly cold winter or late spring, but that early June there were plenty of primroses in all stages af blooming, also in bud. But not only primroses, that place was a veritable rock garden.

About rowan; it features also in Norwegian folklore, much quite similar to what you described for Scotland and England. Specifically Norwegian is perhaps that you should never take objects made of rowan (tools or treen) on a boat; that was bad luck, and if you were fishing, at the very least your catch would suffer.  In Norse mythology rowan was associated with Thor.

It is not often the habit of SRGC to record talks, Marc -for many reasons - and the time was chosen to be as reasonable as possible for as many people as possible- 11 am for you  for example and  the likes of Dave Toole in New Zealand still having to get up rather early!  Without recording the talks it is hard to accomodate all time zones I'm afraid.  If the talk must be attended live, it means a better audience for the Speaker, of course.

The decisions were made by the organisers, of course -and that doesn't include me- I'm just passing on the word!

Second 90th Anniversary Talk- Saturday 4th March 2023  - open to all - zoom link here later

Ian and Carole Bainbridge - A Garden from Scratch - Starting all over again!
1900pm for 19.15 start

" A detailed look at the development of our garden over recent years. Starting with an almost blank canvas in moist south-west Scotland in 2010, we have developed a range of different habitats to accommodate a variety of plants. These include herbaceous, shrub and woodland beds, a rock gardn boulder bed, stumpery, severall crevice gardens, pond and scree areas, bulb meadow patches and a woodland wildlife bank. Alongside these are an alpine house and frames, troughs and a rock gardeners' chicken run! We will cover what we have done, how we have constructed some areas and the plants we have used. "

That was a wonderful talk by Ian and Carole on creating their new garden at Luckie Hargs.
Such an amazing range of cool climate plants that they can grow in their garden.
Though they call it their "retirement garden" they have done a ton of work to make it!
Hopefully one of these days I'll get back to Scotland and can see it in person
cheers

SRGC 90th Anniversary Events and Online Zoom Talks

Saturday 21st October 2023 - via Zoom, virtual doors open at 7pm GMT for 7.15pm start
"Gardening in the South Island of New Zealand" with Dave Toole

Dave (t00lie) is well known to many members and our website Forumists. He gardens in the far south of the South Island of New Zealand, in a climate very similar to Scotland.

Dave says:
'Our property 'Trillium Haven' is situated in a woodland setting and could be described as a garden of 2 halves …we will firstly stroll around shaded areas, home to numerous trilliums and the like, mostly raised from seed and then 'so called' sunnier spots viewing the results of converting existing plots into sand beds to accommodate an increasing collection of alpines.  At times I have been called a hopeless plantaholic , a title I wear with some pride so please be prepared for an overdose of greenery and colour. Sunglasses are optional!'

The Zoom link will be posted here:  https://www.srgc.net/add-90th-talks.asp on the day of the talk.

SRGC 90th Anniversary Free Talks: Saturday 25th November 2023 - via Zoom, 7pm GMT for 7.15pm start  - "The Dry Side... Rock gardening in the rain shadow climate of eastern Vancouver Island, BC, Canada"  with Paul Spriggs
Paul has extensive experience of plants and gardening. He has specialised in the development and construction of rock gardens and is joint author, along with Kenton Seth, of the excellent book ‘The Crevice Garden’ published in 2022. Paul was a key part of the team involved in the SRGC project to build a crevice garden at Inverewe Gardens, Wester Ross, Scotland in 2019.
We are pleased to welcome Paul to share his own experiences of gardening in Vancouver Island, Canada which again has a climate with similarities to that experienced by many of our Members.
-The Zoom link will be posted here:  https://www.srgc.net/add-90th-talks.asp on the day of the talk.
