Shrewsbury Flower Show August 2010
« on: August 14, 2010, 10:50:26 PM »
Shrewsbury Flower Show used to be one of the top flower shows in the country (some said second only to Chelsea) but that was in the days of Percy Thrower who worked as Parks Superintendent for Shrewsbury after he had gardened for the royal family.  These days it seems a poor shadow of its former glory.  Many of the specialist nurseries don't come any more, presumably they don't think it worth their while, and maybe a run of bad weather in the last few Augusts can't have helped trade.  However, it is still a good day out, and very well attended by many coaches from all corners of the country.

Thompson and Morgan put on a super show of vegetables

I helped to man the AGS stall this morning. Congratulations to Celia and Iain Wright who had put in a lot of hard work to produce an eyecatching display, made up of Information boards and lots of leaflets from Headquarters, plus some of their own photos and educative displays of troughs and crevice gardens. The troughs certainly were a focal point of interest and a good talking point, and showed a public interest in small scale gardening with alpines.  Not an easy time of year to put on a display, so full marks for making the effort.

I was there on Friday, and got wet through. I agree with Diane's comments it must be 8/10 years since we were last there and the Show isn't what it was. Very few specialist nurseries in attendance and I noticed that one bulb specialist had some  on display that I could purchase mail order from him at less than half the price!
