The next birthday to celebrate is the 80th Anniversary of our sister society, The Alpine Garden Society. The AGS was founded in 1929, (a few years before the SRGC in 1933) and while 80 is a good age, most of us look younger! ;)  I say "us", because, of course, a large number - a very large number- of "us" are members of both organisations ( not to mention the umpteen others around the world!!).

I expect that all sorts of extra events will be planned to celebrate this birthday.....there may even be cake involved at some point.... (terribly hard to properly celebrate anything without cake, don't you agree?)

Fond congratulations to the AGS on their  anniversary - lang may yer lum reek!

This is the link to the AGS website-   http://www.alpinegardensociety.net     ..... there's no mention of cake yet.... keep hoping!

In Scotland , as a whole, it seems that  most of 2009 is destined to become one long party.... it has been designated the "Year of Homecoming" .......no, I'm not too clear about that, either, but it seems it's going to be "huge" as these event planning folkies say!  " All to celebrate Scotland's great contributions to the world" I'm told.

Over the weekend of 23rd-25th January events are planned throughout Scotland kicking off the 10-month national programme featuring more than 300 events.

The whole year of events is being driven by the 250th Anniversary  (another 250th.... the SRGC and AGS have a bit to go yet, then, being such young things..)  of the birth of the lauded Scottish Poet, Robert Burns.
Burns was a man who could see the beauty in a wee daisy as readily as in the face of a bonny lass, so for that alone he deserves a party 250 years after his birth.

Maggi,

There was a nice book published to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Kew Gardens, large format, lots of photographs, good last minute Christmas present. Just finishing reading it at present.

The AGS journal arrived in the post yesterday and there was mention of their online photographic competition I took a visit to their website and must say I prefer that of the SRGC.

It was great to see a photograph of Luc's garden was shown in the journal and it looked beautiful.

And, there's more, of course..............

2009 is the 200th anniversary of Scotland's national horticultural society - The Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society - the 'Caley' as it is affectionately known.

David, I was about to query the 200 years part of your post until I opened the link. 1809 and still going strong - that is pretty impressive.
