Dear Sue,
There are many keen proponents of this type of compost in the UK, and you can get special gear for doing it too.
It was heavily supported by the organic movement here and there are details with both The Soil Association, and what used to be called
The Henry Doubleday Research Association (but now goes by the name of Garden Organic)
Try: http://www.soilassociation.org/web/sa/saweb.nsf/home/index.html  (under information centre, then library)
and  http://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/

I am ashamed to say that I was left in charge of a neighbour's vermicomposting system for a few weeks and  in spite of following his instructions for the care of the wormery as best I could, I succeeded in murdering them all. SO embarrassing....... The enclosed type of wormery seems  to be a very fragile co-system!  Easier to have an open compost heap, where the brambling worms can work their magic on "ordinary" green waste, as far as I'm concerned  :-[ :-X
