Oncos in flower in southern hemisphere
« on: September 02, 2008, 10:12:18 AM »
Thought I would show a few of the aril hybrids which are flowering at the moment.
On Thursday I select a few flowering stems to stage an exhibit at the Royal Adelaide Show with a short note about arils.

Given the transient nature of most Iris blooms, Pat, it must be very tricky to get good show blooms .....wishing you the best of luck! :D

I picked a couple of blooms just opening last Tuesday and took them to Adelaide, showed them at the Iris meeting then brought them home again and they lasted till Saturday so I am timing the arrangement to last from Thursday to when I take more in on Tuesday to replace them - just means it will be that many blooms that will not be setting seed this year!!

That's an impressive length of time for the blooms to last, Pat....makes your task easier than I suspected 8)

It doesn't pay to read old magazines sometimes; I found an advert for someone selling iris including named Aril hybrids like "Beirut" for $2.50! Back in 1980 that might've seemed expensive!

I picked 12 aril species hybrid stems and took them to the Adelaide Royal Show today with the thought that I would take a photo of the display but, guess what, yes - this dumb bunny forgot! I will try to remember on Tuesday when I replace the blooms with others to at least get a record of the display. Wonder if there will be any nibbles resulting from this?
Fermi Beirut is an arilbred as opposed to aril species hybrids.

Well, I suppose that's not too bad then! But even Arilbreds seem to be hard to find.

Pat,

Every one of them is a stunner.  Remembering just how nice the arilbreds are, but without that wonderful delicacy that the species have.  Beautiful!!
Cheers.

Thought I would show you a few of the aril species hybrids flowering at the moment. Any starting with PT are my crosses with the year and the number.
Note the extra bit of growth on the lip of the first cross.

A moody photo taken on the side of the stove this evening of the irises that I will be taking to Adelaide to replace the others at the Royal Show.

Here are two photos taken at the Royal Show of the aril species hybrids - they certainly opened up over night and in the car on the way down. There was one flower still ok but the rest were pretty far gone of the ones I took down last Thursday.
Have kept the stems which felt as though they were developing seed pods and will see what comes from keeping them in oasis for a while.
And yes I made myself known to the person reading the sign below the irises.

I will post the aril beds that are flowering. I don't know how to put words between photos so I can't explain which one will have some Crocus sp, Calochortus, Junos and Iris subbiflora x I. revoluta as well as some aril crosses. There are still some patches that have not started flowering yet.
