Paeonia brownii
« on: August 29, 2018, 12:24:13 AM »
On a friend request I was trying to source Paeonia californica seeds, couldn't find any but I came upon the occasion to procure Paeonia brownii seeds instead.
They are similar in look, with P. brownii growing at higher altitude (so it's more hardy).

I'm facing the decision if to bring in just few seeds or a slightly larger quantity (due to the US to CAD exchange). So I am posting this here and hope to see if more people would be interested in such seeds. It is a very beautiful peony but it needs a dry resting period so not easy to grow in some climates (without a greenhouse).
Please see the link below, you can also google for it.

Those interested please pm or email; I have to decide fast so don't wait too long. Thanks.

Gabriela  finds this peony does need cold treatment to germinate : http://botanicallyinclined.org/paeonia-brownii-germination/?fbclid=IwAR28_pAKOt2FWbAkrlCW_lWudS9y1js7vMIm4IIhvIeMZUJURnBkNYDaApY

"....  regarding Paeonia brownii germination.
Seeds arrived at a very busy time last fall (not that this should be an excuse), and after a quick search I wrongly assumed they require a warm cycle for root protruding followed by a cold one for shoot growing, like many other peony species.

I also followed this line of thought and kept my seeds in moist storage at room temperature starting mid-October. By January I felt something was not right and at the beginning of February I put the Ziploc bag containing the seeds in the fridge. One month later few of them already show cracked teguments! "

You are quick in gathering info Maggi! :)

As I said, no excuse, there were good sources mentioning the requirement for cold/moist period. And even thinking about its habitat, the moist/warm didn't make much sense.
All is well when it ends well.
