Iris not goniocarpa ?? (Limniris or Lophiris?? possibly)
« on: March 31, 2017, 02:44:46 PM »
I posted this flowering Iris yesterday as Iris goniocarpa. But luc Gilgemyn pointed out to me that it most probably is not and I agree, it is crested instead of bearded.

I bought it as "Iris goniocarpa 07BW00143". No idea about the collection-number. Anyway, I don't really know what it could be... it stays green in winter and doesn't get bigger than 15 cm.

I was so busy envying the  large number of flowers when you first posted it I never noticed what you'd called it!

It's a bit floriferous, indeed  ;)

Someone told me in a PM that it might be something from the chinensis series (Limniris), he thought it might be Iris odaesanensis, but (although I agree with the section) I'm not certain about Iris odaesanensis....I don't think the flower is white enough and the dark circle around the yellow spot doesn't seem dark enough. Pale blue flowers (2.5 cm diameter).

Interesting discussion as I have a seemingly identical plant, also labelled goniocarpa, that came from the Wallises 'Buried Treasure' list a few years ago. It is a lovely and very floriferous plant whatever the name seems to be. I must apologise to Alan Oatway as I recently gave him a division thinking it was goniocarpa.....

I think maybe I. henryi . Mine is a few days from flowering.
I'll get pics then but check out the SIGNA site species database.

Not that I recall, though I may find the list and look.

Two weeks ago we had a lecture on Iris by Jim Almond and he showed a picture of I henryi that looked very much like this, so Arilnut could well be correct.

I'd say you're spot on, John! Thanks! Looking forward to seeing your pics of this plant!
