I wonder if Anthony D is going? Perhaps I could hitch a ride if he is. I'd love to hear Alan and see his reticulatas. We should be able to get these in NZ if they are available from the Dutch wholesalers. But not a whiff so far. We need some contact addresses.

I believe one of Alan McMurtie's Dutch colleagues is in talks about  exporting some Iris to New Zealand.... I'm sure we'll hear when something concrete is known.

To note: Alan McMurtie's irises grace the cover of February's issue of The Garden (RHS) together with an illustrated three-page review. He's also to be featured in the March issue of The Plantsman. www.rhs.org.uk/theplantsman
Yemen, what a country ... Haraz mountains, Socotra, Sana'a, Hadramaut, the empty quarter.... a country of stunning, mind altering beauty...and the friendliest of people.

A few more iris pictures -some will duplicate Alan's  but they might be useful to give different angles and allow labels  to be read on what was a very fine display by John Amand-I think it had been at the RHS show a few days previously.

Sandy Leven  compered the day in his usual inimitable fashion. The second photo shows him introducing  Alan the Iris expert. Show expert  Cyril Lafong was presented with a gold Forrest Medal by club president David Rankin to recognise his achievement  in  winning 50 Forrest medals achieved at the Kincardine show in 2015. He has added a couple more since!. This  award was then complemented by Pam Whittle as President of the Caley(RCHS) who gave Cyril  their Dr Patrick   Neill Medal awarded every two  years for outstanding contribution to horticulture  in Scotland  by a distinguished botanist or cultivator.   As Maggi has pointed out in the next post the previous recipient  was also an SRGC stalwart, Ian  Christie.

What a great day - and especially so for  Cyril Lafong!  I believe  the Neill Medal is the same award that was given the other year  to Ian Christie-  it is, I thought, given to an outstanding " botanist or cultivator."    Cyril 's record as a cultivator is  easily seen at all SRGC Shows!
