I thought that ants were everywhere too - but we've been here for a very long time and there are no ants.  So, yes, it is possible. We've got all sorts of other critters crawling about the place, half of which I have no idea the name of,  but no ants.

What no ants?  We can send back a few.   About 4 years ago the European fire ant made its debut here in the south end of the city.  They are positively ferocious aggressors.  A month ago I got about 20-30 stings on the lower leg which put me off my feet for several hours with a twitching leg afire.  Last Monday they were just under the rim of the compost cart and I got 8 bites on the hand.  Are they as aggressive in Europe?

One colony well 160km north of here was said to be one & 1/4 acres.
