Early Bulb Day at Dunblane 2013
« on: February 16, 2013, 06:47:35 PM »
Some pictures of the event - besides the talks and plants of which more will no doubt be posted shortly, Glassford Sprunt was presented  with a Certificate  of Merit by Pam Whittle, President of the Caley (Royal Caledonian HS) in recognition of  his many years service to the SRGC.

Another good early bulb event under the blush-pink ceiling of Dunblane's marvellous Victoria Hall....

...many pictures of Colchicums by Chris Brickell, an entertaining and informative talk from John Amand on Arisaemas and Cypripediums and a truly splendid, illustrated lecture given by Margaret Thorne on The SRGC tour to Turkey 2012.

...the small non-competitive show had, as usual, tears of Snowdrops, a smattering of Crocuses, regiments of Iris and mirrors of Narcissus (or whatever is their collective noun - I just make these up!).

I saw photographer Liz Cole framing many a plant shot, I hope we see them in the magazine.

Next up Stirling show at Kincardine.

Yemen, what a country ... Haraz mountains, Socotra, Sana'a, Hadramaut, the empty quarter.... a country of stunning, mind altering beauty...and the friendliest of people.

For me the highlight of the Day was the presentation by the charming President of the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society, Pam Whittle,  of a Certificate of Merit  to Glassford Sprunt.

President Pam Whittle of  "the Caley", as the RCHS is known, read the citation for the award which described some of Glassford's many contributions to  the gardening community  and presented Glassford with his certificate.

The certificate reads : ...."in recognition of your highly regarded and significant contribution to horticulture and gardening in Scotland "

It was so nice to see Glassford honoured in this way at an SRGC event - it was good of the Caley to arrange this and I hope it brought the attention of many members to the Caley.

An event as busy as the Early Bulb Day,  like any Show,  generates a lot of work by a lot of people ....

Those in the "catering department" were on the go all day yesterday- from the early morning start with bacon rolls through vast quantities of soup to the last cups of  tea and cake in the afternoon.

In the kitchen
Escaping for a brief rest through in the Tearoom
Feeding the hungry

I'm afraid my photos of the plant display are pretty awful- but if I post them you'll realise how grateful you are for Stan's photos!

A  short digression here..... Stan is  very well known in the SRGC but he is also much involved with "the Caley" and indeed, is the Editor or their super journal, so that's another reason to check out the RCHS and their website. http://www.rchs.co.uk/

http://www.rchs.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/September-2012-Preview.pdf  another of the Caley's newsletters etc.
