My first Hep of the year : an unnamed seedling of Hepatica japonica :D
-
It is really nice, it's always so exciting when the first Hepatica begin to bloom. :)
-
Hepatica asahizuru
Hepatica japonica white
Hepatica flora plena red.
Hepatica japonica murasaki
-
Hepatica nobilis blue with blue anthers.
Hepatica transsilvanica Mrs Elison Spence.
Hepatica japonica sakuragari
-
These are lovely Michael, something to look forward to for those who received hepatica seed from the exchange. :D
-
Michael, the weather here is HORRIBLE - just looking at your hepatica photos again make me feel better - I'm just a bit worried about how mine ( all in the garden) are faring right now..... :-\
-
Maggi, they are flowering way too early same as last year and probably won't set much seed. The plants in the cold frame were all starting to flower so I had to bring them into the greenhouse to take some pics, I don't like wet knees. The mild spell in early December brought them, I moved them to a colder spot but it didn't work. Those in the garden produced a couple of flowers but quickly went back to sleep when the cold spell started. The forecast says it will get milder on Saturday, hope they are correct.
-
I love Mrs Elison Spence & the blue anthered flower Michael.
I managed to get some bits of Mrs E S last year.
-
Michael again you make us all jealous. Well me anyway ;)
Angie :)
-
All looking superb, Michael - special mention goes to asahisuru though ! ;)
-
A few Hepatica today. The sun is shining believe it or not.
Hepatica Japonica Kosino maboroshi,
Hepatica japonica Kuukai.
Hepatica purple Nidan Saki
Hepatica nobilis blue.
-
My goodness! That dark blue nobilis is a cracker, Michael - what photogenic flowers these are. We really need photos to bring such diminutive blooms to our attention, don't we?
-
Maggi,it is the first I have got the true colour. My camera sure don't like blue.
-
So cute little jewels ::) Thanks to share them with us Michael ;)
-
I'm repeating myself Michael, but again : super plants ! :o
-
Love the blue nobilis 8)
Angie :)
-
This hepatica japonica "Hakurin" refused to flower last year... :-[
It seems to want to make up for this shortcoming this season... ;D
-
Luc, if only a year's rest could do that much good to us all! Had you given the plant more food to encourage it this year?
-
How lucky we are to be allowed to look at all these cute Hepatica flowers... :D Thank you all ;)
-
Luc, if only a year's rest could do that much good to us all! Had you given the plant more food to encourage it this year?
That would be a good thing, now wouldn't it, Maggi ?? ;D
Actually, it had been repotted the year before, with no flowering as a result - now after an other year it seems to have reestablished... :D
-
That's a wonderful potful Luc... I'm drooling here.....
-
Actually, it had been repotted the year before, with no flowering as a result - now after an other year it seems to have reestablished... :D
That's interesting- I always puzzle in such circumstances if it is the disturbance that has caused the lack of flower, or if it took a year for the nutrient level to drop sufficiently to encourage more flowers...... :-\
-
I share your indecision on that one, Maggi...
-
Wow Luc, thats are really lovely plant.
Angie :)
-
I have been admiring all Hepaticas. They are just lovely!!
Luc, your Hakurin is something else with so many flowers! In addition, look at all the buds waiting for their turn.
I bought a dozen plants including one Hakurin in December in Japan and brought them back to the US. The plants were without soil for about 4 days since I had the plants and soil inspected 2 days prior to my departure date. I repotted them as soon as I got back in the US. I just checked to see how they are doing and found the Hakurin alive and well with 7 buds growing. It was just a very short break, may be they did not notice or the timing was not bad.

I do not know wether I should start a new thread. I have forgotten where the original question was.
Anyway.
I have at last met my Japanese Hepatica friend in Kyoto and asked why they prune the roots.
He said that if you prune the roots at transplanting they are induced to form a large number of secondary roots which soon are more efficient han the pieces that were cut off. It is a little like pruning topiary shrubs.
Göte
-
WOW Luc, that's a cracker.
-
Hepatica japonica white with a hint of pink.
Hepatica nobilis snow storm
Hepatica japonica Akafuku
Hepatica japonica To-sen.
-
Lovely Michael
-
Michael they are charming - can you tell me ( I know it's tough at this time of year when there is not much strong sunlight ;)) .... but do the pink ones like Hepatica japonica white with a hint of pink and
Hepatica nobilis snow storm fade as the flowers age?
-
They do Maggi, but not very much here, as like yourselves we don' get a lot of sunshine. Those in the shade house don't fade much as they don't get any sunshine at all, but they don't flower as well without sun.
-
Hepatica pubescens.
Hepatica Japonica Asahizuru.
Hepaatica Japonica Lavender.
Hepatica Japonica Three step double.
-
Hepatica Japonica pink
Hepatica Japonica Purple
Sorry these are a little out of focus. :-[
-
Very beautiful plants Michael, I can see that spring is closer where you live than here. It is still only a few of our Hepatica in the greenhouses that have floweres.
-
Gorgeous - especially the pubescens.
-
My first Hepatica to flower in my garden this year was H.nobilis flora plena 'Peter Petersen' - already January 7th. Too early because since we had frost and snow, and most of the flowers are now destroyed, but there will come more.
-
Very nice, Gunhild... :o
Out here, I have Hepatica japonica 'Jaiboser' in flower ! :D
(including greenfly... >:()
-
here 2 pics from a plant from seed, the first a week ago, the other the same flower today
-
What a lovely seedling Chris, you must be very pleased with it.
-
yes I was verry pleased, there are waiting onother 15 young plants,
here some others who flower now
-
Another smashing series, Chris ! "Ginrin" is my favourite here ! :D
You must be terribly excited to see what the other 15 seedlings will look like !
-
They are beautiful Chris.
-
Absolutely beautiful your Hepatica , I love
Christian
-
Michael and Chris Beautiful plants/flowers. It's still early here in Denmark and only a few Hepatica have flowers. Hepatica nobilis 'Ydun' is one of my own double nobilis cross.
H. japonica Semidouble Green
Hepatica henryi Pink form
Hepatica nobilis 'Ydun'
Hepatica transsilvanica 'Schwanensee'
-
Very nice Karl, looks like spring is on the way.
-
Hello Michael ,
I seen your pictures on the site Google , this pictures is very beautiful for all variety , I love the Calceolaria orange ! ...... and all !
Christian
-
Michael and Chris Beautiful plants/flowers. It's still early here in Denmark and only a few Hepatica have flowers. Hepatica nobilis 'Ydun' is one of my own double nobilis cross.
Hepatica nobilis 'Ydun'
I've never heard of this clone, where was it found ?
Will soon show some new H. nobilis, for flowering it need some further days.....
-
Gerhard; Hepatica nobilis "Ydun" is a cross as I made in 2010 and I made a few other double forms from seeds, all nobilis. You can see a picture as I posted last year to the forum; http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=8461.165 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=8461.165)
One of them is pink and I gave it my yongest dauthers name "Cecilie" The first blue got my oldest dauthers name "Camilla" some of them I gave mythological gods name, one of them is Hepatica nobilis "Ydun" You can also see some of them on my homepage: http://kalle-k.dk/Mine%20egne%20Hepatica%20krydsninger-My%20own%20Hepatica%20cross.htm (http://kalle-k.dk/Mine%20egne%20Hepatica%20krydsninger-My%20own%20Hepatica%20cross.htm)

@Karl
I have seen filled ( with a few pollen )flowers from a German grower in Potsdam. Probably he has reached them in F2 :
A multipetaloid form crossed with pollen of a filled form with rests of pollen. The cross looks like a usual form, but carries the genes. This result crossed again with a fertile filled form should give a small percentage of filled plants !
Is it a mysterie to hear about your experiance to get filled results ( in F1 or F2 ) ?
congratulation for your great work !
-
I really like Chris's 'Ginrin' too Luc.
How many years has it taken for them to bloom Chris?
-
Yesterday there was a beautiful sunshine and several Hepatica open the flowers in the greenhouse.
-
And some more. It is still early, I think if we got sun there will come several in the next 14 days.
-
I just hate opening up this thread. So much flowers that I would love to have.
There hasn't been one plant shown on here that I wouldn't mind having.
Thanks for sharing these stunning little flowers. They are just little gems.
Angie :)
-
Karl, can you tell something more about Hepatica euroasatica? Is this a hybrid?
-
Absolutely beautiful plants Karl, I could really get hooked.
-
Wow :o - impressive fireworks, Karl ! Fantastic !
I have just two to add : :D
1 & 2 : Hep. japonica "Hana-no-Nami
3 : first flowering opening on the glistening Hepatica x "Millstream Merlin"
-
You're not helping me Luc ;D
-
I wouldn't know why I would, David... :P ::) ;)
-
Marlene Ahlburg made some very beautiful crossings between H.pubescens 'Tenjinbai' and H. transsilvanica. They are called x euroasiatica. Karl shows, after my oppinion, the best of them, but another (same cros) is 'Röttgebütteler Röschen'. They are infertile.
Last year I visit Marlen Ahlburg. I was very happy for this meeting and we had a very interesting, and for me, very instructive talk.
-
You are right Gerhard it is the way to make filled flowers from seed. These two nobilis are F2 plants made from seeds.
-
Sorry the attachment failed - here is number two
-
Spectacular photos in this thread- and most interesting information about breeding works.
-
Hello Gunhild Poulsen ,
These beautiful little flowers with rich colors ,
Do you have plants for sale ?
Christian
-
Yes the colour is true Christian. I have some surplus plants, but the two nobilis F2 are not big enough to divide yet.
-
Very nice Gunhild, hope soon we can produce two-color Hepatica nobilis :)
-
Yes Kalle that's my wish too
-
Absolutely stunning Gunhild! 8)
-
I've just looked at the previous page WOW, WOW WOW 8)
Like you Angie, I love & want to grow them all too. ;D
-
Stunning shots Gunhild. You own a really nice collection.
-
Like you Angie, I love & want to grow them all too. ;D
Ok I am going to give in and buy a couple. Where I start I am not sure and can I grow them well ::)we will just have to wait and see. I know that some of these Hepaticas are very expensive so I think I better start with something that won't break the bank.
I also will need to find space in the greenhouse.
Angie :)
-
beautiful plants, here 3 pics from the same plant, H.jap.'Sandan-Siro' so you can see the evolution of the flower
-
BEAUTIFUL green on white !
-
Thanks Yann and Mavers - and to Angie, yes you should have some Hepatica, you will not regret - they are the most exciting plants because you can make amazing flowers from seed, single as weill as filled. One almost cant' wait to see the result of ones crossing - one more reason to long for spring.
-

I do have some H.nobilis in my garden and really love to see the flowers. Last year the were flattened with the snow but two days after they had there flowers standing up and smiling. Such a happy sight.
I have been looking to see where I can fit some more staging in my greenhouse.
Not very good with seeds but if I get one or two plants from my tray I am happy.
Isn't plants a lovely addiction ;D
Angie :)
-
Angie, I re-organised my greenhouse last year and managed to squeeze in two sections of compact staging that gave me more room for more plants in the same amount of space.

Angie, Hepatica might be better in a frame outside,if we get a good summer they wouldn't like the heat in the greenhouse. you would have to shade very heavily. I only bring them into the greenhouse at flowering time.
-
A few from the Greenhouse.
Hepatica Jap Shiun
Hepatica Jap Toki
Hepatica Jap three step double.
Hepatica Jap Deep pink ( sorry about the focus)
Hepatica Jap Kuukai

A few more.
Hepatica Americana
HepaticaPink Nidan-Saki
Hepatica Haruno Awayuko
Hepatica nobilis blue
Hepatica Jap Asahizuru
Sorry the pics are not the best quality,it just wasn't my day,

Summer if only.
Michael I didn't think some of these Hepaticas could take the cold.
Don't apologise for the pictures, they are absolute wonderful.
David I spoke to my hubby about more staging and he said I would need to thin down. I thought he was meaning my plan collection but he was meaning me. B.....y cheek.
Angie :)
-
Just three today.
Hepatica japonica Anjyu
Hepatica Japonica Yousei Zaki
Hepatica nobilis Prickle
-
Of all the addictions to have Angie, plants are probably the healthiest & the best ;D
I am plant mad too :P
I have grown hepatica in the garden & have tried some of the cheaper japs. I find them more challenging than the others so starting cheap & working your way up is a good idea.
Some seedlings are coming along from crosses I've tried, a couple of years from flowering still.
Mike
-
thank you for sharing pictures of your lovely plants Michael
-
Really beautiful Michael.
-
nobilis Prickle is amazing, nature can produce gorgeous things

Breathtaking series, Gerhard !!

A fine selection!
Do you promise that spring is coming next week, Gerhard?
8) Since I was probably leaning too far out the window. After 50cm snow this week at least to 10 ° C are told at the weekend ahead. The liability for this prediction lies at the pretty women of the weather forecast ::)
Many thanks for your comments, more coming soon
-
and the end for today, please enjoy ! :)
I did! :)
-
wow, stunning plants everyone!
-
So many wonderful flowers :o
From my small stock.
Both are Hepatica nobilis var. japonica f. magna.
-
Amazing Tatsuo, are they this varied in the wild? Have you seen them in the wild? Could you share some pictures?
-
The blue with white centre one is a seedling by self pollination from a wild collected plant named 'SHI-EN (紫艶)' almost same as its flower shape and colour. Another is also a seedling from unknown parentage.
My place is not wild habitat area of H. japonica and I have no pics of wild plants, sorry Mark...
-
Hepatica nobilis 'Ydun' One of my own cross.
Hepatica japonica 'Momsango'
Hepatica 'Hakaku-Hime'
Hepatica japonica One of my own seedplants.
-
`Monsago` extraordinary colouration !!! :o
Here are a few picts taken today, all are H. nobilis
Birgit has been found by my wife, near the border to Slovenia, Bergfexing has been found in the north of Austria, near the border to Czech. Rep.
Both are similar, different colour. Many other similar clones occure, situable for breeding projects...
-
:D a few H. japonica
-
Hopefully you enjoy it !
-
Crazy colour is realy just that- I've seen a similar shade mixed with some white but that clear solid tone is very beautiful. Perfect!
Mind you, with Hepaticas, I have even learned to like the doubles.

Some lovely plants there again John.
Considering all the attention given to the named doubles, its the range of colours amongst your seedlings that really has that 'wow' factor for me.
-
Anne. Mother plant to number 2 seed plant is Hepatica japonica 'Harukaze'.
It is always very exciting when seedlings begin to bloom, and it is not that hard as long as you have something good to cross with.
We have, for example, some Hepatica nobilis as Severin Schlyter has worked with. and they give really good Hepatica with double flowers and some with special leaves, so even if a Hepatica look quite ordinary may well have some really good genes.
-
Hepatica today
-
What an amazing sight, wish my greenhouse had colour like that in it.
Angie :)
-
Until yesterday it was spring in Denmark, but today blows an icy wind from east. There is no snow to protect our plants and the ground is hard as stone.
In the greenhouse bloom my wife's filled Hepatica nobilis as she has made from seeds.
She spends a lot of time to cross right now, if she does not look at the SRGC Forum and The Nordic Hepatica Forum http://www.hepatica.org/phpBB3/ (http://www.hepatica.org/phpBB3/) ;)

Hepatica nobilis 'Ole'
Told you on FB already, but this is really a wonderful cultivar, Gunhild. Nice dark pink and a beautiful contrast with the stamens!

Hi John
Lovely Hepaticas. I have recently bought my first one, I had no idea there was so much variety
-
Hepatica nobilis 'Ole'
Fine flower - was it named for Ole Sonderhausen?
-

Ah, it's "Ole". I thought it was "Olé", like the Spanish Olé :) ::)

Maybe it is - I was just thinking Denmark.....
-
Maybe it is - I was just thinking Denmark.....
Sounds more plausible in any case!! I don't think there are H. nobilis growing in Spain ;)
-
Gunhild will know the truth, I hope. After all, with naming cultivars, anything seems possible.
-
It is Olé like in Spanish, but I don't think the plant comes from spain, even Hepatica are growing in nature in Spain. Unfortunately I don't know the origin of the name, but I will do som research.
-
It is Olé like in Spanish
Aha! :D ;D
-
Still snowing here spent the day in the glasshouses thankfully some hepaticas are looking good so here is a mixture taken today, cheers Ian the Christie kind
-
A few more hope we get a little sunshine soon, Ian.
-
Even just a little sun has me dashing out to the greenhouse to hopefully catch the hepaticas opening their flowers. It's a good job so many have pretty backs to the flowers!
-
Me too Anne but they need a fair amount of warmth before they respond and I find that it is after lunch before they really respond. We have had some good periods of sunshine here although it is bitterly cold outside and most uncomfortable to be out doors though compared to our friends in the North it must seem like Spring down here in the Midlands. However the cool tempertures have prolonged the flowers on the hepaticas though I fear that many are now past their best so I took the opportunity to have a final session this afternoon and show them here.Hope you enjoy and forgive any repeats.

Fantastic results Karl ! :o :o

Thank you. It is very exciting every time a flower bloom. :)
-
Can someone give me an easy way to distinguish between H. nobilis and japonica? I've got some unlabelled seed pans.
Also hepaticas at Ashwoods nursery are going to be on Gardeners' World - BBC 2 Friday April 5th 8:30pm.
-
It is not easy, Hepatica nobilis var. nobilis and Hepatica nobilis var. japonica, both are varieties of Hepatica nobilis and therefore they are very similar. It's easiest if you know where the plant comes from; Europe = H. nobilis var. nobilis, Japan; H. nobilis var. japonica. All filled forms I make from seeds come from seedlings whose parents are found in Estonia and on Öland in Sweden and the form/variety 'Cremar' so I know 100% sure it is H. nobilis var. nobilis. I made the parents from seeds as I bought from Severin Schlyter many years ago.
Hepatica nobilis var. japonica is available in three variations; japonica, variegata and magna and in Japan there is also another species; Hepatica pubescens. They are all similar, but different from each other in the form of leaves, the number of chromosomes, the number and the forms of petals and a few other things. Hepatica nobilis var. nobilis is hardier than all plants from Japan and I think there is a slightly difference in the shape of the leaves and flowering time.
-
Recent DNA findings by Ben Zonneveld show that H japonica is not so closely related to H nobilis as previously thought. DNA count for H nobilis is around 33 whereas for H japonica it is around 36. The findings put H japonica as a ssp of H asiatica. H pubescens form is tetraploid with a DNA count of around 70, and that is now put also as a ssp of H asiatica. I have the paper here as pdf, could send it to anyone interested. The paper also separates out the two American species from H nobilis, and puts H americana as the type, and acutiloba now as H americana ssp acuta.
But this doesn't help determination by looks alone! These are my thoughts and others will probably disagree! H nobilis and H (asiatica ssp) japonica have a big overlap in characteristics, but on average, nobilis flowers are bigger and there are less petals on the single flower. The leaves are more rounded on nobilis than japonica. (but there are lots of exceptions) The anthers of nobilis tend to be white, whereas on japonica they are often (but not always) in contrasting colours. Hope that helps a bit, Anne!
-
You don't happen to have a DNA sequencing kit handy, I suppose? Is there an app for that? ;D
I did wonder about the anther colour, but was hoping leaves might be different. Most of the plants I have labelled as nobilis have white anthers. I suppose it's possible the ones that don't may be hybrids. The difference in chromosome number would suggest that nobilis x japonica hybrids would be sterile, which is the caes in the one plant I know to be of that parentage.

Found this seedling in the garden today. Sorry its an attachment, can't quite figure out how to show it as a thumbnail here.

It is a pretty shade - nothing that colour out here as yet..... but they are starting to bloom.

They seed all over in my garden. Some are going over now, but most have been in bloom for a month or more. This one caught my eye....

I'm just catching up on this thread and feel almost intoxicated. So many, many lovely pictures of hepaticas shown here. Thank you all! My poor plants suffer badly this cold spring and haven't really started to flower yet.
I did wonder about the anther colour, but was hoping leaves might be different. Most of the plants I have labelled as nobilis have white anthers. I suppose it's possible the ones that don't may be hybrids.
Most H. nobilis have white anthers but I have many times found plants with coloured anthers, growing in the wild. Sorry Anne, not any help.

Just noticed your new website is up & running Janis.
It looks excellent.......I will enjoy it more this evening when I get home from the office.
I've spent way too much already this year on bulbs for delivery in the autumn............hope I'm not tempted too much when I scroll through your bulb list.

"Hepatica 2014" sounds like an exciting event.
Maybe I should consider switching my annual trip to attend Japanese Hepatica events next spring and instead head to Birmingham for this event?
Could anyone kindly give me the direction to find rules, requirements, practices, etc., for exporting plants from England?

This may be a good start for you , Koko:
Exports to non EU countries are possible but the procedure is more complex, time consuming and expensive.
Export orders have to be inspected by an official of the UK Plant Health Dept. who will, if satisfied, then issue a formal Phytosanitary Certificate which must accompany the plants to the overseas port of entry. Charges will be made for this.
For CITES plants: http://www.defra.gov.uk/ahvla-en/imports-exports/cites/ (http://www.defra.gov.uk/ahvla-en/imports-exports/cites/)
A USA Plant Import Permit will be needed too -

http://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant_health/permits/plants_for_planting.shtml (http://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant_health/permits/plants_for_planting.shtml)
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant_health/permits/faq/plants4planting_faqs.shtml (http://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant_health/permits/faq/plants4planting_faqs.shtml) etc!

Ashwood Lower Lane | Ashwood | Kingswinford | West Midlands | DY6 0AE | UK | Telephone: 01384 401996
"Ashwoods Nursery will deliver to Northern Ireland, European Union countries including Republic of Ireland, and other selected destinations. Some of these countries can now order from our on-line shop and delivery charges are clearly stated inthe ordering process.
Alternatively, if you are unable to use this facility or cannot see the plants or goods you are looking for, please enquire by telephone on 01384 401996 or email mailorder@ashwoodnurseries.com for a quotation"
Their charge for DEFRA inspection and phytocertificate for sending Hellebores mail-order to Japan is Ł40 so I guess their fee to the USA will be similar.

Maggi,
Thank you for the information. This is a very good start for me.
If the process is too involved and costly, I will be more than happy to settle with just being able to attend the show.
I would particularly love to see various European Hepaticas.
