Title: SRGC/AGS Show at Ponteland 20th September 2007
Post by: Maggi Young on September 26, 2007, 11:05:41 PM
On Saturday, September 29th, all manner of happy growers and show-ers will be gathering at the Darras Memorial Hall in Ponteland, by Newcastle, to participate in the Alpine plant show. I have it on very good authority that some Southern members are already in the area, disporting themselves in the fresh Northern air before the big event. Sadly, there are two very disappointed noerth Eastern Scottish members who cannot attend... so we will be relying on you folks out there.... yes, that would be YOU....to keep us up to date with all the happenings of the day and provide pix of the super plants which I know will grace the benches.
I hope the day is a roaring success and wish all you exhibitors luck and good judgement! 8)

I'm just about to bunk off work and go home to make a cake for the refreshment stall at the show and have this urge to make a coffee and walnut cake - so if you're dropping into the show you know which one to ask for  ;D  ;D
Then get my plants for the show sorted.
And today I've just helped marshall nearly 3000 of our new students into and out of university induction meetings - gives a whole new meaning the word 'exhausted' so bunking off is allowed!
Do say hello if you're coming to glorious Northumberland

Coffee & Walnut! That will make the 3 hour drive worthwhile. Mind you a little red sticker would help as well, or is that greed?

If you only knew how much we'd like to be there anyway, Sue, you would not be rubbing it in with coffee and walnut cake. :'(

Drive safely, Martin... and best of luck with the red stickers, eh?

Martin I hope you are going to have some competition for the cake and the red stickers.  Don't forget your lunch money the East Lancs contingent are busy cleaning pots as I type.

Hurrrah! News arrived from Ponteland that the Forrest Medal was won by the Wyllie Wifie.. our own Jean Wyllie, with a super Cyclamen hederifolium. Well done, Jean!!

Most points in section I was captured by David Boyd, which proves that you can have great plants even with six cats, one garden and umpteen allotments to care for, as well as the day job! Good for you, David!

[attach=1] to Jean and David and all who contributed to the show. Hope you have all enjoyed your day and now are safely home.

Aha. Sandy Leven said it would do well. I saw this plant on Wednesday at the Stirling Group committee meeting. I also saw how well Jean is doing with shortias. Hundreds of seedlings and yearlings doing well on a diet of pure Swedish peat balls.

Maggi you forgot to mention the flypast by the Red Arrows  to celebrate Jean's success. It is a magnificent plant, I suggested she keep it in the fridge until the Discussion weekend Show next week, but she said it was too full of food! We'll have to hope for a cold week.

Hi, Folks, just discovered about the Red Arrow flypast just now... good of them to recognise Jean's efforts! President Ian has sent some pix so I'll just organise myself and get them posted....watch this pace!

Here we go, Cyclamen hederifolium, a worthy medal winner and the Wyllie wifie herself, looking suitably modest about the whole affair!

Couldn't make Ponteland Show yesterday unfortunately, but heartiest congratulations to Jean and all the other exhibitors and prize winners.  Would only have managed one exhibit if I had made the journey....this gentian was just about opening.

A shame you missed it, Cliff... how did Shelagh and the Gang mange to have lunch without you? Come on, Shelagh, you didn't just have a sandwich did you? And what red tickets did you capture?

Plant pictures will follow but I thought it was important to follow up on lunch. Lunch was OK but the highlight was the 'pudding'. 3 pieces of Sue's coffee and walnut cake Shelagh had purchased before lunch so we'd be sure to get some. Thanks Sue, delicious. Mind you we needed something to help us recover from the heavy debate during judging on Modern Art, education, ecomomics, poltics and Estonian magazines (no punches were thrown)

Quite right, Martin, cake must always come first! By george, it does look good: have I mentioned it's my favourite? She said, drooling..

Off now to try to learn something, anything, about Estonian magazines so I can converse with Shelagh and Brian at the Discussion Weekend without showing my ignorance on this subject!

Got distracted from my Estonian reseaches ( bit of luck that, eh?) by the arrival from Trevor Jones of this photo from Ponteland....
[attachthumb=1]

We have here a charming portrait of, in Trevor's words, the three (not so) wise monkeys, featuring, from left to right, Alan Newton, Brenda Walker and Alastair Walker. Whether their actions are in response to a judging decision or a comment on the Estonian magazine industry, I am unable to say.
I only wish Ian and I could have joined these three, and Trevor and Angie  and the rest of the Troop of monkeys for their get-together after the show !

Trevor made allusion to the wall plaque behind the cheery threesome...something about one very tired MP....

No wonder they're hearing, speaking and seeing no evil. ;D

I feel it is the right time for me to handing over my title of "Cake Maker in Chief." There are many other worthy candidates and I'm happy to relinquish it. Something else is more appropriate now anyway. "Her with the Dirty Fingernails" maybe or "Thoroughly Gone to Seed." I like that one, having counted up over 800 pots of seed at the weekend, some up, some coming, some will probably never come but I live in hope.

Don't worry Maggi we'll bring an Estonian magazine to show you. By the way, after that generous slice of Sue's cake and the Discussion Weekend coming up I will not be getting on the scales any time soon.

Sue, the Orchid was Pterostylis coccinea although I noticed at least one pan with an alternative name. Taxonomists are so called because they like to tax our patience.

On another theme, it's very un 'PC' to take pictures of my bald patch!

Maggi isnt the only one with a passion for coffee cake. Margaret Glynn does an excellent version where the icing is 50/50 butter cream and creme fraiche

Enough of cakes (except to say I persuaded the boss to find a recipe and do me a coffee & walnut cake yesterday. Sorry Diane it won't keep till Loughborough). Like I said, enough of cakes and back to the plants.

Aruncus aethusifolia, stunning colour from Brian & Shelagh
Trochocarpa thymaefolia which merited a Certificate of Merit for Brian Russ
Celmisia semicordata ssp aurigens which won Ian Leslie the best foliage plant trophy
The 'big buns'
6 pan entry which won David Boyd an AGS medal

Some more pictures
Leptospermum nanum Pipit, a tiny offering from Brian & Shelagh
Cyclamen hederifolium Ruby Strain, part of David Boyd's 6 pan and best cyclamen in a small pot
Microcachrys tetragona, best plant in B or C sections, shown by Stan da Prato
Heuchera Hearts of Fire, just to prove Sue G has other skills beside baking
I'll stop at that as the rest would be repetition

Some very nice stuff there. That Aruncus is a most startling colour, how perfect is that? I do like the Trochocarpa... don't have one of those  :'(

Ooh, and more have been posted, how did I miss those... back to the thread...

Well well, I DO have a Trochocarpa NOW! Tim Lever had some for sale at the Discussion Weekend  ;D
I've had a note from Trevor Jones, about the terrestrial orchid shown in the earlier pages, named as Pterostylis coccinia
Here's the note, sent last week when we had just left to go to Glasgow, so only picked up today:

"Hi Ian & Maggie
Just reading the comments on the Ponteland show & there is a picture of Pterostylis coccinia, someone identified it as that & noted the one I had put on was a different name.
Could something be said please, as the new name is Diplodium  for that sp. It was explained to me that Pterostylis curta & the others all flower from the centre of the rosette, but Pterostylis coccinia sends out a runner & flowers away from the rosette, I hope this makes sense & I have explained it properly. Other than that it's those pesky botanists keeping themselves in work!. All the best

Trevor & Angie

I'll just point out that the plant in the photo is not Trevor's one, his was a smaller version in a two pan class with another Diplodium.
