I was just wondering where the Blackpool show will take place.
Thanks Dan

Good question, Dan... I was going to get to that later!
The Blackpool Show will be held in the Collegiate High School, Blackpool Old Road, Blackpool FY3 7LS.
These  are the directions given in SRGC show schedule for 2006:" Make for M6 and turn off at Junction 33 onto the A6 and head south. Turn onto the A586 signposted Blackpool. After lights at A585/A586 Jn, continue on A586 through three more sets of lights; at next set of lights turn right onto Blackpool Old Road." Sadly, there is no clue as to where we might be when urged to "make for the M6" so I am little the wiser!
I suggest you enter the postcode into www.multimap.co.uk and see what that tells you! Sorry not to be more help!
Regular forum Star John Forrest lives nearby and may come to our rescue with better directions!

Those instructons will certainly get you there and the only thing I can add is that after the last instruction turn right into the first large school on the right. As far as the M6 reference, it depends where you are coming from. Where do you live Dan? If you are coming from the south it would make no sense to use JNC 33 (in terms of mileage) except that the directions are simpler. If you want the southern instructions let me know but better still ask santa for a SAT NAV  ;D. I got one for my 60th birthday and have all the show venues stored. Now I can chat away to my companion (usually Lionel Clarkson) whilst a lovely lady tells me where to go.(I have a lady at home who also tells me where to go from time to time  :o).

Not worth bothering with the car from there.  ;) Don't forget to introduce yourself at the show. I'm usually on the computer inputting the results.

As we approach the first Scottish event of the year, at Dunblane, we realise that it is only a short hop to our first competitive show of the season. This will, of course, be the Blackpool Show, to be held on Saturday 17th March 2007, in the Collegiate High School, Blackpool Old Road, Blackpool FY3 7LS.
This great show is one held jointly with the AGS, and this year, being and "odd year" the show will be held under SRGC rules and a Forrest Medal will be awarded.
We understand that there has been a bit of a mix-up in the AGS show schedule printing, so anyone wishing to exhibit is advised to work off the SRGC show schedule, to keep to the right track for class numbering etc.
Members of both SRGC and AGS are eligible for all prizes, medals and other awards. Points count towards seasonal aggregates and merit medals according to membership.
The show will be open for visitors from 12 noon to 4.00pm.
The Show Secretary is Lionel Clarkson, who may be contacted by email at :
LionelClarkson@agsgroups.org

For some of our English forumists and readers, Blackpool may be too far north for you ( though you should try it, you won't get a nosebleed!) so I'll do the decent thing and remind you of the Kent show, happening on the same day: AGS KENT SHOW, Rainham School for Girls, Highfield Road, Rainham, Gillingham, ME8 0BX.   I imagine a few of you will be off there to enjoy yourselves... well, take your cameras and don't forget the "stay-at-homes" !!

Hi everyone, just arrived back from Tenerife in time to help at the Blackpool Show. The light ing conditions were not very good for photography and I had to use a tripod to get these shots.

First your caption competition for the 2 shots taken with a long lens during judging.

Next are some cushion plants, starting with the Forrest Medal winner, Geoff Rollinson's Saxifraga Coolock Gem. Then a rival in Lionel Clarkson's Saxifraga federici augusti ssp grisebachii. The last Sax is Cumulus.

The rest of this posting are Dionysias: Dionysia afghanica ; Dionysia microphylla x freitagii ; Dionysia 'Monika' ;
Cionysia viscidula x freitagii

More to follow...

John
Thanks for bringing the Blackpool Show to those of us unable to get down.
The standard looks to be very high in the cushions.
I hope to be there next year.
Did you enjoy your holiday?
Nice weather, nice food and a few drinks. 8)
I have just been watching the rugby all day, great matches but now I find I have something to stir the soup with.   :'(:'( :'( :'( :'(

Jim Almond, who rasied Saxifraga 'Coolock Gem' must be just as pleased as Geoff Rollinson at the continued success in the medal winning stakes that this superb Sax enjoys. Congratulations to both gentlemen!
Must confess I have a soft spot for the yummy pink flowered S. 'Coolock Kate', myself. It may be a feminine preference!

As the wind gets very stormy here in NE Scotland, I hope that everyone who contributed to the Blackpool Show is now safely home and enjoying a rest!
Only 'til tomorrow, though, then we want more stories and pictures!!

Jims daughters are Gemma and Kate (and you couldn't wish to meet 2 nicer girls) so I guess both Saxes are feminine!  I couldn't pick a favourite, they are both grand.  Not sure about you in pink though :-\

I have lots of pics from the AGS Kent show.  Not sure where to post them .... could go in 'events' but I'm inclined to put the Frits, Narcissus and Hepatica in the relevant threads.  What do you think?

Here are a couple of tasters.  Bob and Rannveig Wallis' assembled troops (I did manage to sneak one class off them - YES!) They took the Farrer with Erythronium multiscapoideum ... one for the BD.   And a general bench view.  More later.

Tony, I didn't know that Jim had these two daughters, I have not had the pleasure of meeting them but their namesakes are certainly charming!

Don't be silly, you must have heard of, if not seen, pink elephants?

I think you are probably correct to put them in their individual pages. I'm thinking about a page for "At the Shows" for pictures of the general scene, people and so on... how does that idea appeal? I hoped it would encourage more of the candid shots that everyone seems to enjoy so much... like those posted by JoF of the Judges etc.

I must say the weather could have turned nasty whilst I was away and been nice when I returned but I guess that only happens in Camelot.

Here are a few more pics from the show.

First some daffs a la Jean Wyllie and another. ( I must be a real plantophile, I always forget to look at the exhibitor's name) I know Jean's because she was with me when I took them.

I will post these Hepaticas here too. By the way, I nearly came over all faint when I saw a £200+ price tag on a single plant on one of the nurseries.
I like the doubles but I think I would have walked off with the Millstream Merlin given the choice.

Narcissus 'Betty Mae'
Narcissus'Twin Stars'
Narcissus 'Gypsy Queen'

Hepatica nobilis var. japonica 'Junisen'
Hepatica nobilis var. japonica 'Koetsu'
Hepatica 'Millstream Merlin'

More great pix, JoF, what would we do without you? So glad you came back from Tenerife in time ;)

The Wyllie Wifie's pot of Narcissus 'Twin Stars' is looking good, isn't it? Such a pretty thing. And N. 'Betty Mae' is proving a good doer, too.

Yummy hepaticas, but I think I draw the line at £200 . The seller should have had a seat nearby for those of a nervous disposition!
I agree that 'Millstream Merlin' is just exquisite.... I will now make lots of you jealous by telling you that we were lucky enough to be given a piece of this plant by a wonderful grower the other year. How's that for a gift, eh? Thanks, Boydie! :-* :-*

I was in contact yesterday with Jim Almond, who has been having some technical difficulties with his website lately, to encourage him to persevere with renewing all his "lost links/pages" etc. I am confident you will echo my words of support to him. Jim's site is this one: Alpines for the Enthusiast, and is a super resource for alpine gardeners, see  http://freespace.virgin.net/almond.jim/

However, I'm digressing again, The point was, I was congratulating Jim on Geoff Rollinson's continued success with the Saxifraga 'Coolock Gem' which was raised by Jim. Geoff has won several medals with this excellent plant, which he grows to perfection but the fact is, the plant is a "Good 'un" to start with, and every little helps, even if you are GR! We all know Geoff could put roots on a walking stick, but it wouldn't win Medals without that neat form and all those flowers!
Jim has kindly given me a photo of the winning plant, to compliment JoF's pic; I'm tempted to caption it "and here's one I made earlier"

Thanks a lot John - and how on earth do you go about to preserve the true "blue" on your pix - it hardly ever works with me  :'(

Millstream Merlin is a super plant, it really is a wonderful shade of blue.  It's very hard to come by (hint, hint, if anyone has a spare or would do a swap for a japonica!).  Not sure about the rendition of colour of H Koetsu - compare my picture of Hepatica Koetsu
http://www.srgc.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=49.144
with John's on this thread.  Mine was taken in natural light, though rather shady conditions of my greenhouse.  John's was taken in the artificial light of the show hall - not sure whether with flash or not?   John's picture definitely favours the true blue end of the spectrum and my picture goes towards the bluey-purple - hard to judge which is more accurate.
I'll need to take another look when I'm next at home in daylight   :-\

the retrospective ones can be a 'surprise'!"

Pleased that we down here can breed a few nice plants to make the northerners happy. `Twin Stars' and `Betty Mae' are both NZers. Credit goes to Betty Clark of Ashburton for `Twin Stars.' Not sure about `Betty Mae' though BC IS Betty Mae.
Narcissus 'Betty Mae' was raised by Joan Whillans, near Ashburton in NZ, who named the plant after her good friend, Betty  Mae Clark.   Maggi

The fact that so many of the smaller narcissi have such long-lasting flowers is one of the things I like best about them! They seem so willing to please us with their display. Later flowering N. bulbocodium and assorted jonquils last for ages in the garden and dear N. 'Cedric Morris' just goes on and on in the glass house (those outside get a bit battered by the weather , being so early)
Longevity of flowering is a good trait for a show plant but "good value for money" for a stingy gardener, too!!

In my experience, as an exhibitor: the most apt term would be a "confusion" of judges! :o

In my experience, as a judge, then a "consideration" of judges !!! ;)

Hi Folks

Wow - what a forum and my ears were burning so I had to look in. What's taken you so long you ask - well, by the time I've prised Coolock Gem and Kate off their 'foreign language' webgroups, and done what I have to do and occasionally get round to growing plants it's time for bed!! Fantastic pics from John and if you look back at that first one - even though I'm the nearest, I didn't touch her bum - honest!
Thanks for the inspirational comments and I'm well on the way to a full revival of the show and gallery pages. To avoid getting lost in cyberspace, they are best accessed using the menu from the 'usual' home page http://freespace.virgin.net/almond.jim/
using the link to the show pages and then e.g. 2007 which use a new freespace provider - I just hope it doesn't end in tears again! I will try to keep looking in and make the occasional post..... He says......  Best wishes to you all
  Jim

Thanks for doing them.
May I have a request/proposal that the older ones are also saved so that one can see how the show have been over several Years.
Maybe that is done already but I seem to find only the latest. That much work is worth being seen for more than a year.

Kind regards

Not sure that Callianthemum anemonoides is found on the slag heaps of Wales but the coal is a good background top dressing for the flowers.
A few quids worth in this pot of Tecophilea-cyanocrocus.
I'm rather partial to the orchids and the Ophrys need close scrutiny. Here Ophrys bombyliflora.
I haven't come across this little orchid from the Holy lands, Orchis-gallilea.The individual flowers though tiny are rather beautiful.
Finally a beautiful Pulsatilla  halleri slavica was backlit by the light from the window.

Is it ordinary coal that's used for top dressing at the Callianthemum picture? I were in the believe that it was poisonous for plants! We do have an old heap of it, and if I could use it this way it would be perfect :) I also think that it looks very nice. As a comment I can say that we have tried to get rid of our coal at the local land fill, but they refused to take it because of possible environmental problems :o

Cheers

Another beautiful bunch John, every one a perfect treasure. You are so good at photographing HAIRS.

Per-Ake, without knowing anything about the chemical makeup of coal, and perhaps different types of coal have different chemicals, I have no reason to think coal is poisonous to plants. There is a widely used composty stuff here in NZ traded as "Superdirt" usually and about one third of the content of that is crushed lignite. It isn't very dusty in that even when wet, it doesn't leave one's hands filthy so it must be fine gritty stuff. It's mixed with fine crushed pinebark and a few other less pleasant animal products and though it doesn't SOUND very nice, in fact is a very good growing medium, slightly acid and I use it as the base of all my potting and seed mixes, just adding extra pinebark or grit/sand as required.  Far from being poisonous, it is very good for anything from the cabbage/carrot patch, to high growing alpines and the rarer, more difficult bulbs such as juno irises. It is very free draining too which is a help.

Thanks for your informative reply Lesley! Coal were used in Sweden I believe during WW2, but after that it were quickly overrunned by oil. Most Swedes would probably don't know what it is. I will give it a try in my compost :)

Cheers

We use char coal and that is much purer and has been used for tropical orchids for a looong time. It is said to help against deseases.
We also had had charcoal at the farmacy against diarea. That was of more controlled origen.
The problem with the "stone coal" = the one on the picture is that it contains more than coal and some of those compounds are not ideal for humans. Thay are of no problems to the plants so the city dump is maybe right in neglecting to take it.
Per Åke I think You can sell it to peole that uses wood for heating if You have a lot and can not use everything for composts.
If using it for bbq as we do with charcoal I would wait extra long before putting the food on the grill.

Good luck
