Title: Iris book reprint
Post by: arillady on June 02, 2011, 10:23:31 AM
Received my copy of the BIS Species Group Winter Bulletin 2010/11 yesterday.
Seems that you can now order a reprint of A Guide to Species Irises again through print on demand on Amazon.
ISBN-10: 052120643X ISBN-13:978-0521206433
A paperback which is a whole lot cheaper than when the first hard cover edition was published.
This book has been my iris bible since I received it in 1997.
Highly recommended.

My order's in! I wonder how long it takes for them to print it? Hopefully before the August 15 deadline for FREE delivery to Australia!

Yes, a note to that effect comes up when you click to view...... but I understood that this is a reprint, not a revision   :-\ ???

Lesley and all,
I believe it is just a reprint but with a new preface - so no it is not updated with the newer species. If you get the BIS Species Group bulletin you will see that there are updates on species.
If you are interested in species I personally recommend the BIS Species Group and SIGNA and of course the ASI for arils.
I have attached a scan of the contents page to tempt those of you who may not be members of the BIS Species Group.
For those juno enthusiasts you will see that there is new information on Junos from Tony Hall.
The next bulletin will be on Iris foetidissima and the unguicularis group

Thanks Pat. I let my BIS sub lapse a few years ago and haven't belonged to the others. Subs aren't so easy for me now.

I know the feeling about subs with different plant groups. I have left a couple lapse - usually determined by the subjects in the publications.

Shoot, I finally caved in and bought the original at a rediculous price last fall, apparently NOT money well spent :P

Investment wise the hardback would be better. Better colour in photos too I think if you go by the cover print shown on a google site side by side.

My thanks too Peter, for the links. I'd better do something abouit them. Being an OAP now, many things have had to be put aside. Seeds, or plants, or subs, or books, or music. One or two maybe but not the lot.

Just received this message from Amazon:
"We have received new release date information related to the order you placed on June 03 2011 (Order# ...).
Please be advised that we have a revised delivery date for the items you ordered on June 03 2011 (Order #...).

The Species Group of the British Iris Society, et al "A Guide to Species Irises: Their Identification and Cultivation"
    Estimated arrival date: February 10 2012 - February 15 2012
You have not yet been charged for this item. We do not debit money from your payment card until just before your items are dispatched"

which is a bit disappointing - especially as the Aussie dollar could be a lot worse against the GBP by then!
cheers

Pat , 'A Guide to Species Irises ' has been my Iris Bible too since 1997 . ,when it was up to date . There was no photo available then of I stocksii etc. -but it does feature photos of some more obscure species taken in the wild like: wendelboi, platytera, drepanophylla. microglossa , carterorum, tianschanica, polysticta, heweri.

It is not as scholarly written and illustrated with beautyful botanical paintings as R. Dykes 'The Genus Iris' 1913 ( which I treasure ) but it is still very good .

How fortunate we are to have such good photos of Iris stocksii in the Forum and in the IRG, heh?!! ;)
