Title: Glasgow Show at Milngavie, Saturday 7th May 2011
Post by: Maggi Young on May 07, 2011, 06:42:24 PM
Well, Ian and I were not able to go to the Glasgow show today.... :'( :'( :'(
but I hear that Cyril Lafong won the Forrest medal  "with a yellow daphne"   :)

There was a grand display from Elspeth Mackintosh on behalf of the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, too, I'm told.... with a highly covetable Podophyllum "with silky red flowers" ..... now, I'm pleased to hear this news.... but I do hope that someone was there who had a working camera and will furnish pix at some point......... watching this space!! ;)

I'm so envious of the varied nurseries you get at your shows. I came home with money today :o

There is a lot of interest for Kevock or Edrom to come for a change

Stan, thisis a great report..... so many super plants.... only worrying thing is how many of them would normally appear in the Aberdeen show... which isn't for another two weeks  :o Yikes!

John Lee and Bill Robinson the Show Secs  must have been pleased with the turnout... more than I expected after the variously very hot and very wet weather that Scotland has had lately!

Stan,
Is there a chance to let me know something about the origin of the violet in the fourth pic and how it is labelled?
I received the same (or similar) plant from Hermann Fuchs from Hof/Germany some years ago!
It was determinated by an American friend as a Viola affinis hybrid !

It was a good show, although John and Bill were worried that they were going to have a poor showing but a lot of plants turned up on the day.
The Podophylum in the RBGE display was amazing. The leaves and flowers were as Maggi described them earlier.

But Maggi everyone was saying that the plants they had in this show would normally be at the Aberdeen show. Perhaps I shouldn't have told you that :-X

Stan, what a great set of photos to let us feel the flavour of the show. The hall at Milngavie has good light, of course, and this really helps your photos to feel fresh. thanks for all your effort in taking them and posting them... it's a lot of work, I know!  :-* :-* 8)

I can well imagine it, Stan... but, as we've seen, the Glasgow bakers are well beyond par in their efforts... those meringues alone could keep any army marching.  8)

I cannot take credit for running the plant stall entirely on my own, as the photographs seem to indicate.  I think my colleagues had just slipped away for another "infusion of home baking" at that point.   We all needed some sustenance (dare I say some Danish pastries?) after dealing with so many Danish customers!

I can second that about the catering.  We got held up trying to get through Glasgow from the South due to preparations for a road race on Sunday so I had to remember my "rat race" to the Clyde tunnel.  Of course, I was trying to navigate from memories of the 1970's.  Guess what, they had changed the road layouts, built new housing schemes and blocked off roads.  Anyway,we got through the tunnel, through Anniesland cross and got stuck again at Bearsden cross due to a traffic accident. All this meant that we arrived at Milngavie at noon instead of about 1100.  Quick decision required - plants or food?.  No contest, the plants would still be there after lunch.  A quick right turn was made and we were in the catering area first !!  We had first choice of the homity pies and meringues before the mob came in. The large meringues were chosen and appreciated.  The plants were rather good too !

Were there any of our Danish Forumists among the visiting delegation?

I can't really see well enough in the picture to see if there are any I recognise... will get Ian to take a closer look, he knows more of the Danes than I do, anyway.

There were a few at the Nottingham Conference but we didn't manage to get them in a photo there!

Gerd, The violet is in the display of the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, so I will ask Elspeth or John next week,  if someone else hasn't got a note  of it.

Gerd, Elspeth tells me tha Viola is V. aff  sororia.

I have asked her, and she is willing to help, if it is possible to have plant lists of the RBGE displays to put on the Forum with the photos of the displays. So  that is something I'll be working on with Elspeth in due course.

Maggi, Thanks to you and Elspeth!

This confirms my determination more or less because sororia and affinis are
quite close to eachother.

Well spotted Shelagh, Ellie really enjoyed serving customers which made her realise the need to do maths at school and i thoroughly enjoyed her company. She bought lots of plants from the other attending nurseries, arranged for tea and scones to be brought to our sales tables and ordered herself a SRGC fleece. Not bad for a 7 year old.

Not bad at all, Rob! She is likely to be a great member of your Show Team for a long time..... I remember how many sales Cheryl Jermyn used to achieve for Edrom when she was little.....made loads more than her Mum and Dad... had all the gen about how and where to plant things, too. Never underestimate the skills of a junior partner! ;D 8)

Yes! and very quick to take my money, (very pleasantly though) ;)
I got a little back as I saw her leaving the members table with one of the minature Hostas I had for the 50/50 sale.

And the lesson about the need for maths no doubt well learned. When related to taking of money from people, maths seems an excellent idea. ;D I'm always pleased and gratedful I took Latin at school. It makes my present garden/nursery life a lot easier.
