OK, my first aril of the season, regelia-SDB hybrid 'Vera-Ruby, from Lawrence Ransom.  Very robust, smaller bloom, like a table iris, 2 per scape.  It has a wonderfull fragrance, somewhat similar to Lily of the Valley.  here are two different fotos, one with a dark T-Shirt background, the other in full light.

here are a few shots of a sister to 'Vera-Ruby', the somewhat pinker 'Vera-Beatrice'.  Just for fun, I've made a few close-ups to see some of the subtle colour and patterning.  They were mis-labeled, therefore, change the name should you have saved them to your files, before I edited them.

The dwarf regelia hybrid Vera-Anne, another of the Vera sisters from Ransom.
A smaller and delicate flower on a robust 14" or so plant.

Pity that the Vera irises are not in Oz. They are all lovely. Agree Jamie that Maggi seems to find some great emoticons.

Pat,

yeah, the emoticons thing is just plain old unfair. :-X :P

Lawrence has told me all the Vera girls are non-fertile, but I may have some pods with the pollen on SDBs.  They are over a week now and growing, so, just maybe.  I couldn't get any pods to take on them, but the pollen may be partially good with the right mate.  His 'Benazir', also listed as infertile, took a pod with 'Afrosiab' last year, but I lost the seed to mice! (here is where I need a special emoticon! :'( )

In Vera-Anne, where does the yellow come from Jamie?
Title: Re: Regelia 2010
Post by: Regelian on May 12, 2010, 11:18:26 PM
Lesley,
it is a cross of 'Vera' with an SDB, but this pollen parent is uncertain, either 'Third Charm' or 'Triplicate'.  Certainly the yellow comes from this side of the heritage.

and Iris korolkowii, every year the neck of some of the buds wilts, what causes this?
Title: Re: Regelia 2010
Post by: Regelian on May 17, 2010, 09:52:05 AM
Peter,

beautiful flowers.  I've not experienced this wilting with arils, but in other plants I've attributed it to Fusarium.  There are quite a few pathogens that can cause this collape of the vascular system.  I've never found a cure, but it rarely is life threatening.

The white hoogiana is a beauty Jamie. Very elegant and pristine.

From the shape of the flower I would suggest the red iris could be one of the taller spuria hybrids which are around nowadays in many colours and shades. It would help if we could see the leaves Chris. How tall is it in bloom?

Thank you, Oleg, we are lucky to have a wonfderful Team to make the Show run smoothly.

You are quite right when you say that your Spring is looking very much like summer! So many flowers so quickly.... the garden must be a real delight for you at the moment.

The dry conditions don't fit with Iris fulva but the height doesn't fit with the modern spuria hybrid. Maybe a new pic when it is in flower this year, and the whole plant please, foliage and flowers.

Thanks Chris.

'Dunshanbe' is a wonderful parent!  Nice shot of it in bud.  The name of the city has an 'n' in the registered name, perhaps the relic of a translation, as I've seen the city spellt different ways on different maps.

Here is 'Eastern Blush', a cross of 'Vera' x 'Faux Pas', a tall bearded.

The deep-coloured spathe is a great support for the flower colour. While that purple is not my favourite, I do like this very much and it has a wonderful stature or "presence." :)

Lesley,  you hit the nail on the head, it has presence.  The colouring is a bit strange at first and, as the genes of arils and beardeds mix in unexpected ways, one often sees strange blends that, when scrutinized, don't look like they should work together, but somehow do.  Mother nature just keeps on trying.  Mind you, I'm sure there were a few truly ugly siblings! ::)

By the way, the word means Monday in Persian,Tajick and Dari. Literary - "the second day", the first day of the week was Sunday there and Monday used to be a market day. So, you see, it was a market town centuries back.

Oleg,

now that is interesting.  I love knowing from where names and words come from, as well as their meanings.

Thanks for sharing this,

Well my sister has a truly ugly sibling and both are reasonably happy. :) Anyway, those odd colourings are what I love about the whole aril section. In what other flowers do we consistently see greens, greys, browns, blacks and those odd oyster colours that make arils so classy?
