How can I possibly write to or even email all the wonderful friends I have made on this fabulous Forum? There are not enough hours in the day. So I'm taking an easy way out and sending to everyone here, posters and lurkers, a warm wish for the very merriest of Christmases (recent northern weather permitting) and the happiest and healthiest New Year possible.
Merry Christmas everyone, and a happy New Year. :-* :D

SCOTTISH CHRISTMAS FAIRY
I am a little fairy
On tap o' the Christmas Tree
It's no' a job I fancy
Well how would ye like tae be me
Aw tarted up wi' tinsel
It's enough to mak ye boak
An a couple o' jaggy branches
Rammed up the back o' your frock
An' these wee lights aw roon me
I canna get my sleep
An' there's the yearly visit
Fae Santa - Big fat creep!
On Christmas Day I'm stuck up here
While you're a' wirin' in
An' naebody says 'Hey you up there
Could you go a slug o' gin?
It's nae joke bein' a fairy
The job's beyond belief
Ye've got tae go aw roon' the wean's beds
An' lift their rotten teeth
But o' aw' the joabs a fairy gets
An' I've mentioned only some
The very worst is sitting up a tree
Wi' pine needles up yir bum
When aw' the fairies meet again
By the light o' the silvery moon
Ye can tell the Christmas fairies
They're the wans that canna sit doon
The Christmas tree's a bonny sight
As the firelight softly flickers
But think o' me I'm stuck up here
Wi' needles in my knickers
So soon as Christmas time's right by
An' I stop bein' sae full o' cheer
I'll get awa back tae Fairyland
An' I'll see yous a' next year.
-

Happy Christmas everyone! Very best wishes for a festive season from Robin :)
robin-long time no hear! hope you're having a good holiday :)
to everyone--hope you are having a nice midwinter day whether that means eating and being merry, celebrating with loved ones, or taking time for solitary reflection--all time honoured winter activities!
(midsummer for you downsouth! so you scarcely need well wishes...lol-just stay cool, and keep brightening our days with your flowers :) )

Happy holidays to all, and thanks for making this forum such an interesting and informative place to hang out!

Happy holidays to all, and thanks for making this forum such an interesting and informative place to hang out!
great shot, lori--i've never been farther in/higher than kootenay plains (a low snowfall area) in winter, and that only a couple of times..
-
Hi Robin,
Good to hear from you. Hope you are enjoying the holidays and looking forward to your permanent return to the forum. Paddy
-
Hi Cohan & Paddy,
Yes, I'm back in Switzerland and have really missed contributing to the Forum but everyone has been much in my mind and I'll post some photos from the UK trip after the Christmas celebrations. We have a full house in the chalet with lots of young to keep us up to scratch and awake into the wee small hours!!!! 8) Snowing today but my alpine rockery plants still look happy poking through - soon they will be blanketed in white. Happy, happy days to you and looking forward to reading your posts whilst other are skiing! Aye Robin
-
A very Merry Christmas to all the friends in the Forum
Roberto
-
Belated Happy Christmas to all of you!
Grandson enjoying the snow yesterday.
-
Thanks to everyone for their greetings and especially the lovely cards, pictures and flowers/foliage shared. A white Christmas almost seems to be the height of achievment but perhaps there's a bit too much white in the northern hemisphere this year. I believe there were 2 in New Zealand in the whole of the 20th century. My mother remembered one from about 1919 or thereabouts. I hate to tell you this but Dunedin had the country's highest temperature yesterday, 32C. I daresay Australia was hotter.
-
great shot, lori--i've never been farther in/higher than kootenay plains (a low snowfall area) in winter, and that only a couple of times..
Cohan, I must admit I have not been up there in winter either, LOL! I borrowed the pic from one of Stuart's back-country ski trips to show how magnificent it all looks in this season. I've only been in the relative lowlands for a bit of cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing. There just aren't enough hand- and foot-warmers in the world...
Lesley... amazing to hear about the other side of the world - what a contrast!
-
Lesley,
We actually had rain and 23oC here yesterday, a blessed relief after the 35 and 36 the 2 days before.
I recall growing up that we had a frost one year in Christmas week, which is almost unbelievable compared to the last few years. :o Given we had just under 20oC as our minimum the other night, the thought of a frost is quite weird!! ;D
-
paul, congrats on the rain! amazing that historically you could have had temps so much lower!
lesley, its always fascinating to know the conditions are so different somewhere else at the same time, but its actually harder to believe that conditions here will be so opposite in 6 months--incredible that we can have these conditions of pure white and everything 100% frozen above and below ground, and then be totally green and growing and even warm!
while i can cope fine with the winter here (and having moved back knowing what its like, i vowed not to fret!) were i somewhere warmer, i would not have the slightest twinge of regret at missing a white christmas!
that said, i know the native woodland plants really appreciate the snow..
lori--i think pictures of the back country in winter are the perfect way to see it! i am not interested in skiing off the horizontal, so i was never moved to visit anywhere in winter that would increase the amount of snow i have to deal with! ;)
-
All the best for a wonderful Christmas and a great Year 2010,
let´s allways make the best from everything we get!

Gosh, consider that probably your largest enemy is alcohol, but in the Bible is written:
"You are to love also your enemies".
I think this will do Hans?
Did you ever use LEO.org.?? The best word translator!
-
I'll drink to that Luit.

Many thanks Luit !!!
Maybe would it's be better :
Human child, consider that probably your largest enemy is alcohol, but in the Bible is written:

No - I have never heard LEO.org .....
I use partly Google translater and sometimes my Bookman ( Franklin ) .....but the best translator is still Maggi - do you know she understand near all my german ?

Wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year with many flowers!

My post was in the spirit of the pluralism of the forum - a collection of people from diverse cultures and languages who all come together and share a common interest.
So, in translation: "Christmas blessings on all my friends in the SRGC and also a prosperous and healthy New Year. A special thanks to those people who were so kind to send plants during the past year, especially snowdrop friends.
And, now, it's time for a drink. All the best for the moment."
Anois, tá sé in am óil arís. Slán tamaill! - Now, it's time for another drink. Bye for now!
Paddy

Thanks, Paddy! Those BBC Alba programmes do have some uses .... even for the Irish Gaelic one can learn something from the subtitles! ;)
-
Maggi, there is quite an amount in common between Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic; enough that I could follow a conversation and make myself understood. It is somewhat like the various dialects of Irish here in Ireland; they are different but similar at the same time.
Here is an apposite poem for this season where alcohol may be taken a little more liberally than other times of the year. It is a poem I have always liked and include a translation which will give the gist of the poet's thoughts.
An Bonnán Buí
le Cathal Buí Mac Giolla Ghunna
A bhonnán bhuí, is é mo léan do luí,
Is do chnámha sínte tar éis do ghrinn,
Is chan easba bidh ach díobháil dí
a d'fhág i do luí thú ar chúl do chinn.
Is measa liom féin ná scrios na Traoi
Tú bheith i do luí ar leaca lom',
Is nach ndearna tú díth ná dolaidh sa tír,
Is nárbh fhearra leat fíon ná uisce poll.
A bhonnáin álainn, is é mo mhíle crá thú,
Do chúl ar lár amuigh romham sa tslí,
Is gurbh iomaí lá a chluininn do ghrág
Ar an láib is tú ag ól na dí.
Is é an ní a deir cách le do dheartháir Cáthal,
Go bhfaighidh sé bás mar siúd, más fíor,
Ach ní hamhlaidh atá, siúd an préachán breá
Chuaigh in éag ar ball le díth na dí.
A bhonnáin óig, is é mo mhíle brón
Thú bheith sínte fuar i measc na dtom,
Is na luchaí móra ag triall chun do thórraimh,
Ag déanamh spóirt agus pléisiúir ann;
Is dá gcuirfeá scéala in am faoi mo dhéinse
Go raibh tú i ngéibhinn, nó i mbroid fá dheoch,
Do bhrisfinn béim duit ar an loch úd Bhéasaigh
A fhliuchfadh do bhéal is do chorp isteach.
Ní hiad bhur n-éanlaith atá mé ag éagnach,
An lon, an smaolach, nó an chorr ghlas,
Ach mo bhonnán buí, bhí lán de chroí,
Is gur chosúil liom féin é ina ghné is ina dhath.
Bhíodh sé go síoraí ag ól na dí,
Is deir na daoine go mbímse mar sin seal;
Níl aon deor dá bhfaighinn nach ligfinn síos,
Ar eagla go bhfaighinnse bás den tart.
Is é a d'iarr mo stór orm ligint den ól,
Nó nach mbeinnse beo ach seal beag gearr;
Ach dúirt mé léithi go dtug sí an bhréag,
Is gurbh fhaide mo shaolsa an deoch úd a fháil.
Nach bhfaiceann sibh éan an phíobáin réidh
A chuaigh in éag den tart ar ball;
Is a chomharsain chléibh, fliuchaíg bhur mbéal
Óir chan fhaigheann sibh braon i ndiaidh bhur mbáis.
THE YELLOW BITTERN
By Thomas S. McDonagh (1878-1916)
(Translated from An Bonnán Buí in the Irish
of Cathal Buí Mac Giolla Ghunna)
The yellow bittern that never broke out
In a drinking bout, might as well have drunk;
His bones are thrown on a naked stone
Where he lived alone like a hermit monk.
O yellow bittern! I pity your lot,
Though they say that a sot like myself is curst --
I was sober a while, but I'll drink and be wise
For I fear I should die in the end of thirst.
It's not for the common birds that I'd mourn,
The black-bird, the corn-crake, or the crane,
But for the bittern that's shy and apart
And drinks in the marsh from the lone bog-drain.
Oh! if I had known you were near your death,
While my breath held out I'd have run to you,
Till a splash from the Lake of the Son of the Bird
Your soul would have stirred and waked anew.
My darling told me to drink no more
Or my life would be o'er in a little short while;
But I told her 'tis drink gives me health and strength
And will lengthen my road by many a mile.
You see how the bird of the long smooth neck
Could get his death from the thirst at last --
Come, son of my soul, and drain your cup,
You'll get no sup when your life is past.
In a wintering island by Constantine's halls
A bittern calls from a wineless place,
And tells me that hither he cannot come
Till the summer is here and the sunny days.
When he crosses the stream there and wings o'er the sea
Then a fear comes to me he may fail in his flight --
Well, the milk and the ale are drunk every drop,
And a dram won't stop our thirst this night.

I was thinking of sending a message in Portuguese ... unlike Gaelic, Portuguese may look quite innocuous and understandable in the written form, but the spoken form is quite another story ... :D
Anyway, I raise my feindlich glass of liquid raisins (Moscatel Reserva) to you all!
Chloë
(working over the weekend :( )

Easy for you to say, Chloë....... in fact I find the written version very confusing also!
As for the Irish or Scottish Gaelic; what really frustrates me is my inability to "hear" what I am reading.... true of the likes of Portuguese as well, but I feel more guilty about the ignorance of Gaelic, it being closer to home :-\
working over the weekend
yes, me too.
-
lovely poem, paddy,
a good reminder that sadness, solitude, loss (and the efforts to avoid and forget them!) are every bit as much a part of midwinter as celebration!
thanks for the translation, as i'd get not a word out of gaelic!
portuguese in writing i'd get more of, and some spoken were it brasilian pronunciation ;)

By george, that sounds like a lot more fun than hiking into Edinburgh for the "Bash" there, though the numbers involved may by similar ! ( Well, we're always told that that's how many are out and about at these events, can't say I believe it myslef!!)
Since it is now officially the New year on the other side of the world, I think I'll take that as an excuse to make hot toddy in celebration .... my old year cold needs all the help it can get!
-
I hope your cold is improving, Maggi. Can the virus be transmitted through the Forum? I had a cold start yesterday and am feeling quite miserable today.

Happy New Year to you all.

Yes folks, it is already NY'sD here and I'm listening to a nice programme of classical music put on each NY'sD from 8am to 8pm, called "Settling the Score." It is a line-up of Concert Programme's listeners' favourites through the year. Three choices can be sent in and the whole lot collated to choose the top 50. Mine for this year were Schubert's String Quintet, Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and Beethoven's 32nd Piano Sonata. Of course one doesn't know what will come up until the last one is played. I'll have to take a radio out to the garden with me so as not to miss any.

Gisborne, where Gwen's daughter reports from, is just about the furthest east point in NZ so, given a sunny day, is the first place to see the sun in the new year, hence the big crowd, rapidly attaining, in local terms, something of the summer/winter solstice status of Stonehenge. Of course there are a few small South Pacific islands which are further east and on our side of the International Date Line, but we choose to ignore those. :)

Many thanks Cohan,
We have never been there in winter but I'm certain that that lovely Potentilla nitida rubra will be very cosy under a considerable layer at this moment.
