No, Carol; fairly typical of  GS that such things are promised "later" but never actually materialise  :(

FOR ALL CANNY SCOTS

Scottish Daily Mail has a voucher in today's issue (27 May) giving £4 off the entry price for the show for 2 people. Not a bad return on 40p!

Apparently there are 9 new floral exhibitors in the Floral Hall this year (though I believe, from discussions at the Harrogate Show, that the total number of exhibitors is down).

Nice pictures Ian, looks jolly gloomy in the hall, is this effect from the flash or is it rather dull inside...it reminds me of Harrogate trade area, the hall there is very poor on the lighting front, I don't know how the display plants survive a few days in such conditions...one reason that the alpine show at Harrogate went down from three days to one as three days had a terrible effect on the plants. Good to see that the die hards are working as hard as ever to encourage alpine growing

Plenty going on there then. And a good selection of food by the looks of things. A chocolate stand Maggi? or will you have to take your own?

Some very interesting stuff there but yes, dreadful lighting. For the plants' sake and everyones' I hope it's just an optical illusion.

Hi all, a quick note before I get to work, the lighting is terrible i would say worse but must not swear, the Highland hall where the floral show is we would ususally see it full of cattle and sheep the powers that be do not recognise that we have some of the very best horticulture in Scotland but special consideration for flowers and plants NEVER I am sick trying to tell these people and the whole show is going to move to a new area as the Edinburgh airport is going to expand well someone please tell the high heid yins we want  somewhere suited for flowers, plants, people evrything, more pictures later,  cheers Ian the Christie kind.

Hot News! The awards tables are just this second in from Gardening Scotland:
Wow! Kevock Plants have done it again!! Huge congratulations to Stella and David Rankin and their team for pulling off another Gold Medal, Alf Evans Award for the best alpine exhibit and BEST IN SHOW !!!!  With luck the stand will feature strongly on the BBC TV programme Beechgrove Garden this evening , Friday 29th May at 7.30pm BBC1.  Also on Sky channel 971, I think.

AWARDS
Best Floral Exhibit   Kevock Plants
Best New Floral Exhibitor   Chrysanthemum direct
Best Show Garden:    Var Scotia
Best Floral Art Display   Castle Douglas
Best New Show Garden   Borders College
Alf Evans Award (Best Commercial Alpine Exhibit)   Kevock Plants
Best innovative award   Binny Plants
ECO award   Var Scotica

Though on the awards table their garden is named as "Farming of Yesteryear" - presumably the organisers/judges are not so tough at GS as those at Chelsea etc. in insisting that exhibitors "follow the stated brief"  and thus  "Var Scotica" has this blurb on the GS web site  ::)    :
Quote
Var Scotica

Name of Garden: Neep Hut
Size of Garden: To follow
Description of Garden:  Our "Neep hut" is an old corrugated tin hut on iron wheels which old farmer Duncan used to tow, full of neeps, into whichever field was required to feed the hungry sheep in the hard Strathardle winters. Sometimes it was towed by horse but, more often than not, mainly using his old fergie.
Plan of Garden: To follow

The SRGC did not have a full display this year, just the small decorative beds to adorn the publicity stand, but a Silver medal has been awarded nonethe less, WELL DONE IAN C and THE GANG!

Neil Huntley of Hartside has won a Silver, as did  White Cottage Alpines, and the wholesale nursery Harperley Hall Nursery, exhibiting at GS for the first time with alpine and rock garden plants.

Binny Plants had  ‘An urban New Zealand garden’ with endemic and other non-native plants for their display.

Jacques Amand got a gold for their unusual bulbs.
Gavin and Beryl MacNaughton of Macplants have also won Gold.

The Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society won Gold for their display, a celebration of the bicentenary of ‘The Caley’, showing its close association with Scottish Horticulture over the last 200 years.

Good to see that President Ian was able to meet the Princess Royal and present her with a copy of the new Meconopsis book, Bill Terry's book on blue mecs.; 'Blue Heaven' .

The Princess does not look terribly amused, it must be said  ::), and Jim Jermyn, in the centre of the pix, looks very odd indeed    :-\.....glad to see the Princess looks more cheery as she meets Stella and David Rankin, who are both  smiling so widely they look like they may burst!! Another successive best in show for Kevock; they must be very proud. I'll bet they are "Christmas crackered" now, too!

Thanks for these super photos, Ian....... perhaps it was Ann who was on the other end of the camera for some!!

A very warm sunny day at Ingliston brought out the punters. Must commend the Scottish Rock team for their stand and display which attracted a good deal of attention. Very well done to them all
A few more pics from Gardening Scotland today.

1. "Canned" Ian - in work mode. Like those shades, Ian  8) 8) 8)
2-6. Kevock's award winning display - Gold, plus Alf Evans award for best display of alpines/rock garden plants and Best in floral pavilion - well done to Stella, David and crew

MacPlants of Pencaitland Gold medal winning display - in fact Beryl was responsible for design and build for three of the displays - including Macplants, and the Caley's 200th exhibit; (can't remember the third). All were adjacent and made a wonderful set of exhibits: a lot of hard work and the awards well earned!!!
4.  Trollius x cultorum 'Cheddar'

5, 6: display of Meconopsis x sheldonii - a really stunning exhibit of well grown plants entitled: Rodella and the Blue Poppy

Many thanks to everyone who posted photographs; lovely to see reports on these far-away events.

Must say I am very taken by Trollius cultorum 'Alabastar', a plant I have admired for many years but have never seen for sale here at home. I must go on the chase again.

Congratulations to the SRGC members on their success.

When I saw the picture of Trollius Cheddar, I thought of T. Alabaster too.
Would like to know what is the difference, if there is any??

Some super plant pix there, David.
I'm not entirely sure whether Ian is most in "working" mode when he's doing his BBC bit or when he's eating large ice-creams..... (see Ian C's earlier photo) ;)

MacPlants display looks superb and Ian tells me he thought it was the most impressive in the show hall.
I think the third display that Beryl designed was for the Scotland's Garden Scheme?  :-\
Beryl is one of those amazing people; quiet, efficient and capable of achieving practically anything..... not sure if she's ever thought of dabbling in rocket science, but I'm sure it would be a doddle for her!

Luit - if I remember correctly both Alabaster and Cheddar were on display on various exhibits. And I have to agree with you there seems to be little significant difference........ Need to see them side by side perhaps.

Maggie, thanks. Now that you mention it, Beryl's third contribution was the Garden Scheme. I too thought that Macplants was the most naturally impressive planting in the pavilion with some really good subtle changes across the large exhibit. For me, the rock work on the winning alpine display was very unnatural and with Meconopsis PC Abildgard at the highest point just didn't look right - mind you they did have some magnificent plants - Celmisia Eggleston Silver for example.

Hi all we have arrived home and unloaded the plants from the display a huge effort by the Bainbridges, Shaws and Graham Wenham thanks so much and I agree with Ian I thought Beryls stand was just such a natural garden with the plants matching the colours so well. I am away to London in the morning to Kath Drydens funeral so will post later,  cheers Ian the Christie kind.

Luit, I believe the difference is that  'Cheddar' is edible!

No, I don't believe there is any great difference in appearance at all.

Its too hot in the garden so I will take the oportunity to download a few pictures.
The UK launch of Bill Terry's book, was held on the SRGC stand where President Ian presented copies to George Anderson (Cally Soc) and John Mitchell (Mec Group).
Afterwards Ian was able to present a copy to HRH Princess Ann whilst Jim Jermyn looked on.
Best garden in the show - Kevock
One of the most spectacular exhibits was a simple planting of a sea of Meconopsis.
John Amand had his usual forest of Arisaema
I was taken by this garden built by Beryl McNaughton for the Open Gardens Book.
I am sure that Ian Young visited the yellow VW. I would have loved to see Ian there in his shades and the cans on his ears.
It was a very good show but I am glad that our stand was in the hall where it was much cooler than outside.

Nice pix, David.
You must both be tired after your weekend, I know Ian is, even with the ice cream fuel.
We're just not used to all this heat and sunshine, are we? Forecast says it will all change again soon, so I suppose we must enjoy it while we can.  :-X

It was a wonderful show and we all had great fun... have to admit it left me totally wiped but I would not have missed for worlds  ;D Graham was a new addition to the 'team' this year and had so much fun that he turned up for all three days rather than just two of them! I look forward to seeing him on the stand again next year. The Joint Rockers' tried to take over the stand on the Saturday but we managed to defend ourselves  :D We moan and groan, with good reason, about the lighting in the Floral Hall but this year at least I for one was glad we were not in a marquee the heat was beyond a joke out on the show ground and there were regular PA announcements to drink lots of water. Anton & Margaret Edwards did a stint on the stand on the Saturday and enjoyed themselves... if you are coming to the show in 2010 do consider joining our merry band for a couple of hours. This gives those of us there for a three days a chance to escape and wander into a quiet corner  :) And will someone remind me next year to do that!

The Kevock stand was fab as were Beryl's and John Amand's Outside I was impressed with the gardens created by the colleges and wondered if the SRGC shouldn't create a pallet garden just for the heck of it!

Yes, cute display with the VW, wasn't it? Here is a photo with the Beechgrove Garden TV presenters from the Perennial charity's website: http://www.perennial.org.uk/news/plantforplaunch.aspx

I did notice on the TV coverage that sadly no-one had spotted that the logo painted on the VW was wrong.... it proclaimed theat Perennial was the " Gardner's Royal Benevolent Society" .... I'm getting crotchety about such things, even though my own typing is terrible!
