Hello
Does anyone know of the exact dates for the spring shows in Prague this year?
Also the cheapest means of sleeping a couple of nights in Prague, for two hitchhikers?
Razvan

hi Razvan,
I know the conference is visiting in the show on the 5th May. It runs for 3 weeks. Here is what I found on the website. It will be my first time in prague so I don't know anything about cheap accomodation.
SHOWS
Including plant sale in the traditional show church garden on Karlovonamesti - Moran, Prague 1, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (dates are also shown on the RGC Calendar under "Vystavy")
Early Spring Show: 27 March – 1 April, 2006 (Karel Lang and Jiří Novák)
Main Spring Show: 3 - 20 May, 2006 (Vojtech Holubec, Martin Hajman)
Autumn Show: 11 - 23 September, 2006

Hello Susan
I also found those dates on the website, but they are for 2006 and I was wondering if they would be the same considering the early season this year.
Razvan
-
prehaps these are this years dates. Don't speak czech but they look as if they could be.
V roce 2007 pro Vás připravujeme výstavy v termínech:
Předjarní výstava - Klubové dny - od 2.4. 2007 do 7.4. 2007 (Pozor změna termínu!)
XXXVIII. Májová výstava - od 2.5. 2007 do 19.5. 2007
Podzimní výstava - od 10.9. 2007 do 22.9. 2007
-
Razvan,
Here is 2007 spring Czech exhibitions schedule:
http://www.skalnicky.cz/vystavy.php
Prague:
2.4. - 7.4.2007
2.5. - 19.5.2007
Rooms are very cheap there. Note two weeks around May,1 there are a lot of tourists in Czech and hotels are slightly more expensive.
-
and cheaper outside the city centre. I was 10 minutes walk from the show in September 2005. I'll look for the map later and tell you roughly where I stayed
-
Thanks Olga
Great site, whish I could speak the Czech language. Have to see if there is some website to translate it into English.
Razvan
-
They have English mirror at
http://www.backyardgardener.com/cz.html
But it is poor. Fresh information is only at the Czech version.
Mark is absolutely right. Prague is not big and staying at the outskirts is convenient. *** costs $15-25 for person for double room. If you are going to visit Pruhonice you can stay there.
-
Razvan, the best is, if you ask on the train station (czech. "Hlavni Nadrazi"). There are a lot of "accomodation agency". If you want privat lodging, morning, when to the city go international trains there are a lot of people, that offer their accomodation (czech. "Ubytovanie").
Or http://www.ubytovanie-praha.sk/ (http://www.ubytovanie-praha.sk/)
http://www.limba.com/sk/cesko/ubytovanie/chaty-a-byty-hotely-privaty-kupele/praha (http://www.limba.com/sk/cesko/ubytovanie/chaty-a-byty-hotely-privaty-kupele/praha)
When want you visit the exhibition?
-
Thanks for the links.
I am thinking of going at the end of April - beginning of May, as on my way from Romania to Praga I would be able to attend three shows: at Bratislava, Brno and Prague (on 29, 30 April and 2 May). And on my way back maybe go the Belvedere Alpine Garden in Vienna.
Have to see though, how things work out.

Now that is interesting. We have have 7 Slovaks at work and I've asked them all, when at home, to find out if there is a alpine/rock garden club. They have all come back to say no. Now you say you will attend a show in Bratislava. Is there a group in Slovakia?
-
Well I've sort of translated Olga's link http://www.skalnicky.cz/vystavy.php (http://www.skalnicky.cz/vystavy.php)using a website translator, and from that vague translation, I understand that there are shows on 28.4. - 8.5.2007 in BRNO and on 28.4. - 1.5.2007 in BRATISLAVA [and several smaller towns]. I'm not sure if the shows deal excusively with alpine plants, but any plant show would be interesting. Well now, if someone could translate that page, there would be some interesting information.
-
oops I copied a link already shown
-
I have emailed them to find out if they could put together an English version of the web site
-
I will go to the spring exhibition in Praha on April 2nd and visit some very interesting gardens in the Czech Republic. Anybody will I meet there? Nobody?

Razvan, you are right about shows. I’ve never been in Bratislava but Brno society has very interesting garden. And the more impressive thing – Arboretum and it’s alpine gardens:

I am in Praha on May, 13-20.
-
OK Olga, now Brno is on my want to travel list :)
I especially liked the fourth picture with the vertical concrete slabs, I do believe that Peter Korn is trying to build something like that.
Cheers

Here are more photos from Brno
-
Zdenek Zvolanek's tiny rock face
Josef ?'s out crop. The house was bought because of a small rocky outcrop that was then excavated and a small trough showing great use of crevicing and various rocks
Large rock crevicing made my Ludek Zvolanek ZZ's brother
Tlatla's rockery
Milan's crevicing taking up the whole garden except for a small strip of grass
-
Fab to see these pix, Mark. There are rockeries, and then there are ROCKERIES, ain't there?
-

The best plants for sale there are in Praha, but only in few quantity :(
In Brno it is very tightly between sets of shelves but the show was wonderful. There were a lot of rare plants (only show plants not for sale). On the show there were a lot of mini rock garden with the vertical stone slabs (something for Per).
On the old forum you can find thread with photos from Prague show. If I find more time tomorrow I prepare some photos from Brno.

Hello all Rock Alpines friends,
thanks to Mark Smyth I found your discussion about spring Prague show and as I am the author of www.skalnicky.cz, I would like to confirm the precise dates of all the shows in the Czech republic. The exact dates are available at http://www.skalnicky.cz/vystavy.php . I am sorry that the web site is only in Czech language, unfortunately I don´t speak English and even this letter is translated by my daughter. However, I will try to create an English version of this page (about the Czech and Slovak shows) so that it was readable for foreign friends as well.
Just to explain: the www.skalnicky.cz web site is available to all people interested in rock alpine plants and gardening. They are completely non-commercial and made with enthusiasm and love to alpin plants. I can´t create them all in English version as I don´t have money for a translator, sorry.
Good luck with accomodation!
Best wishes Martin Pilny, Prague

Martin, hello and a very warm welcome to the SRGC forum! Thank you very much for takingthe time and trouble to make contact. Thanks to your daughter too, for her help with the translation of your letter... her English is very good!
I wish you a good season's growing in your gardens and hope your shows are a great success, also the Conference, of course.
Best Wishes,
Maggi

Nice Photos Ewelina it is a pity I have stopped travelling
-
Thanks very much for the Brno pictures Ewelina - tell me, is that Phlox_hiberson the real colour - and is that the real name ?? It's a lovely little plant anyway.
-
Luc,
There is a Phlox douglasii J A Hibberson which is an ice blue/mauve. I think it could be the same as the picture allowing for colour reproduction, although in real life the plant looks even better. How did you manage to read the label, your eyes must be good :)
-

My Nikon deform the colour a little, especially blue. But I think each camera has some defect.
As regrds the name, sometimes I buy from Czech Republic the plants, that don't have correct name, but they are beautiful.
If you want more photos...
-
it is a pity I have stopped travelling
Always you can start, Derek.
-
Beautiful pictures Ewelina
-
Thanks for the explanation Ewelina and Susan !
Main thing is : that phlox is a little stunner !
As to my eyesight, I could brag about it Susan, but honesty forces me to admit I read the name under the thumbnail.... ::)
-
I still haven't got over Mark's pictures of ZZ derived rock gardens-absolutely stunning. I showed them to she who must be obeyed-"No" she said in a very loud voice "Your'e not starting to convert the whole of the garden". Can't understand why not.
-
David next time there is a conference you must attend. I cant wait to see the gardens again. This will be my third tome to look at them
Here is a bigger shot of the one I posted and a shot of the top
-
Harold, with bald head, is thinking "OMG cant she see what she is standing on" while ZZ thinks "please no more questions"
-
I would love it but can't see me getting "time off" ;D

Razvan, probably we meet in Praha. I'm on 2 May too. Perhaps we identify us in crowd, that arrive to the show.
Will sombody be on 2 May in Praha too?
-
not me. As far as I know all from here are arriving on the 3rd
-
Czech gardeners are just like British (incl NZ) gardeners. Getting old, grey or balding and slung about with cameras. :D
-
If everything goes well I will be in Prague 1, 2 and maybe 3 May. Hope to meet too.
-
we will be coming out on the 3rd as well, but prob spending the time looking around the city as we haven't been there before. Maybe we will see you at the airport Mark? Are you staying in the city overnight, if you are, see you for a beer, we are staying in the old town.
-
sorry arriving and heading straight to the hotel due to flight times

Some of them probably are, Lesley, but those in Mark's photo are Irish gardeners, just visiting!
