Just back from a well attended show at Edinburgh.  No surprises as to who won the Forrest medal - Mr. Lafong .  The value of his Pleione exhibit would probably pay off the national debt!
The pictures will give an idea of what the event is like for those who cannot attend.

I must say I am always jealous of the opportunities you have for plant purchases. We simply don't see this selection here in Ireland and getting plants is always a challenge.

Is the green colour of the table coverings a bit strong? It seems to be too dominant for the flowers.

Paddy

As an Irishman you will be an expert on green !  It is probably more accentuated in the pictures.  Some more

Lots of photos from Edinburgh for you.... both Ian and I were snapping away..... but too much to do here tonight to catch up on 30 hours away before work  at the BBC tomorrow ( how does it pile up so??)
Ian will be watching Malaysian Grand Prix, so you'll likely not get much sense out of him! ::)

Great pix, Tom..... well, some of them, at least!  :P
I have to tell you folks that Tom said the "untitled group" picture was of a witches coven ....... we wouldn't have minded but Sandy Leven had not 2 minutes before said the same thing! Tom and Cindy went off looking happy enough so I don't think they were too worried about any curses from our cauldrons!

 Paddy, the wee dug is our westie, Lily .... she's ten years old. She will be very tickled that you thought she might be a youngster!   Jean Wyllie will be less impressed that I took my wee dug to be "the most important one" rather than her!! ;D ;)

Thanks to all for the super pictures, we came home completely Christmas crackered. I must thank Ian and Carol Bainbridge not only did they and the team organise this super show but they fed a multitude of people afterwards. I would also thank John Mitchell and Elspeth RBGE i have never seen the skills at buttering rolls so well performed thanks to everyone else who worked so hard in the kitchen, cheers Ian the Christie kind.

"A drum, a drum, MacBeath doth come"

 so he did.............

Ron McBeath that is  ;D

So he did - along with a lot of other enthusiastic folk and we had a fantastic day' perhaps we could charge folk to come and enjoy the fun - oops we DO charge folk to come and enjoy the fun! One elderly lady appeared with her shopping trolley  and used a walking stick to get around the plants sales room to make her purchases... another I observed had one of those motorised zimmers... which I for one avoided getting in the way of!
It was a fab. day - oh and the 'coven' was quorate so our decisions are binding :) [Maggi what were our decisions  ??? ::) ??? - for a start there was no walnut and coffee cake that is a hanging offense in my book!]

Definite curses flying around for the lack of coffee walnut cake... though it must be said everyone seemed to cope pretty well with the umpteen others on offer! Carrot, Lemon Drizzle,  chocolate, apple cake.... any number of speciality gluten free and/or dairy free goodies.... all sorts of other yummies, great freshly made filled rolls .... the egg mayo  rolls were scrumptious ..... ::) 8)

Not too sure we managed many  spells errrr, decisions.... free eye tests for judges, I think...... ::)

I know that the shows are about plants.... but I cannot help feeling that the Teas are the backbone of the operation.... therefore that makes the kitchen the engine room.....
[attach=1]
Mary, Kathleen, Eileen  and Elspeth
Mary Pryde is a great cook, by the way, as well as a keen member and wife of Ian Pryde, who was busy stewarding in the show hall ,many of you will know that Ian is is charge of SRGC Seed Packeting.
Elspeth works at the RBGE and was responsible, with John Mitchell for the Botanic Gardens' display in the show hall as well as working all day in the kitchen. Her daughter Eloise did sterling service taking the tea money!   Eileen Goodall is the artist whose work I showed earlier. Kathleen is a former Edinburgh Group Treasurer.

[attach=2]
John Mitchell, also from RBGE and serving as a judge shows his culinary talents with some other skilled helpers .... Elspeth is in the background and, to my shame, I forget the name of the other member, who was busy all day.... I'll find out... :-[

[attach=3]
Joint Show Secretary Carole Bainbridge washes her hands... but not of the whole affair  ;D

[attach=4]

Early snackers.... visitor from Tyneside, accompanying Tom Green who was exhibiting very successfully and Susan McBeath

 plus, click the following pix to enlarge..... some of the table decorations for the tea room, done by "Georgie" from the Botanics... bless her!

Out in the Foyer the Club boards had been set up by Anne and Sandy Leven .... photo of those is last!
 Also in the main foyer were the paontings of Eileen Goodall, shown already,  the Club Book sales, Anne Chambers with her beautiful cards, reproduced from her own paintings.... Anne is an RHS gold medal winner, you know.
Glassford Sprunt had plant labels and Journal Binders....
Anne Leven had the range of Club Clobber for sale ( tasteful garments embroidered with the SRGC logo !!)

This all proved a handy meeting point for associated interest groups.... or witches' coven meeets, as some would have it  ::)

 Thanks, Cliff for your encouragement.... I'm slogging away here!!

Quite so, Cliff!  Actually, this is a good point to say we  are more than delighted to have Mrs Elizabeth Mills, a charming lady more well known as "Liz" as our next  nominated President.
Many will know Liz from her days as the SRGC Secretary and  we are delighted she has accepted the nomination as our President to follow Ian the Christie kind.........no shortage of friendly and capable help to keep the SRGC to the fore, I think!  8) :)

There's  a difference between a friendly club and a "friendly society", Cliff, as I learned last week with the troubles at the Dunfermline Building Society  :o   A lucky escape for my nest-egg!

( for those reading outside the UK, a Friendly Society is another name for a Building Society.... which is a financial institution,( but not a bank) run for the benefit of its Members .... many of these are in trouble now, as are Banks here and abroad  :'(     Sir Fred Goodwin is the disgraced head of a failed Bank. I hope overseas readers can follow our British humour here?  :) )

Now, what about the show hall and exhibits...... I'll post pix in blocks .....
 click on them to enlarge the image.....

First the benches filling up as plants are staged....... you'll see some familair forumist faces..... and in poc 4, Cyril Lafong, our dear "Secret Squirrel", grower extraordinaire, with Jim Paterson.
A digression here..... Cyril will be featured soon in an episode of the BBC TV programme, The Beechgrove Garden".... I'll let you know when I find out when exactly.

Jim Paterson and his wife, Janet, are keen growers from Invergowrie, home of the Taylors and Mr and Mrs Fred Hunt...... they had a fabulous little Arisaema on the bench  which some of us found utterly bewitching, if I may use that expression.... :-\
 The Arisaema was a tiny A. omiense.... seen here alone and with another in its class, A. nepenthoides from Anne and Viv Chambers

And the winner of the Marathon IS.......?
Our wonderful Maggi. Humbly she accepts her trophy then sinks exhausted (though gracefully) into a bed of thick chocolate sauce.

A million thanks Maggi. A marathon indeed. Was there anything there you DIDN'T photograph?  ;D

David & I were trying to decide if there were any plants Maggi hadn't taken a photo of... very few we reckoned! Not every SRGC member present at the show had the photo taken - Maggi I suggest in future years we insist that they all have their photo taken as they arrive, this will save considerable time and allow for more coven conventions erm... meetings!

Frankly if, after this plethora of pix you do not make it to the 2010 show I will be totally amazed!

Fantastic account & photographs of the show on Saturday Maggi. Thanks for the birthday greetings and the spontaneous rendition of the "Happy Bithday" song by all those in the room at 8.30am!! You thoroughly embarrased my daughter Hannah and i hid behind the balloons. Couldnt think of a better place to spend my 50th birthday. Thanks to all.

Ian and I were mindful of the fact that even some of those who attend the show venue might not get much chance to see the show.... folks like Rob, busy on his stall all day, for instance, so we did try to snap as much as we could!

Rob, glad you enjoyed the tuneful ( not!) singing for you in the morning......I beg to differ with you on Hannah's reaction..... she looked pretty chuffed to me to see her Dad so embarassed.  ;D 8)

It was a pleasure to meet her .....( but before everyone starts asking where the pix of the sweet Hannah are, Rob asked that her photo not be taken for the web.)
She's a little sweetie, for sure!

Excellent report. ;D Beautiful plants. 8) Now we just need Sandy to post a pic of his Chillean flame tree. His house looked as if it was on fire when I walked up the hill with Heidi last night!
