Post by: Carol Shaw on March 18, 2009, 01:43:07 PM
Just a reminder that this is happening on Saturday... I know Sandy Leven would love to see the benches groaning with plants :)

Well we've put our entries in, when I spoke to Jean last night she said I was the third person to call her. For Sandy's sake I hope a good few more folk have phoned by now! There is nothing a Show Secretary dreads more than empty benches... overflowing ones they can cope with even if it does mean juggling things around  :)

I've heard from a very tired Jean Wyllie that the Dunblane show was lovely.... the benches were groaning with the weight of the plants  8)
Secret Squirrel  (Cyril Lafong) won the Forrest Medal but Jean was so busy all day with the catering that she did not get a chance to find out which plant he won it with  :P
I suspect most of those helping with the catering might be in the same sad position .... I know it is something we  work at consciously here in Aberdeen to make sure that those kind folk working their tails off in the kitchen get a decent chance to see the show.

I believe the Wyllie daughters were helping out, too, and the grand children ..... given that only one Wyllie Girl is still a member of SRGC, that's pretty good of them, I reckon. I know there are a good gang of kind helpers there, but more hands always make lighter work.
Unless you are directly involved in the running of a show it is hard to comprehend the actual level of work needed to make the day go well. My hat is off to those like the Stirling Group who have more than one show a year..... I can only feel faint at the though of the likes of David Hoare in England who has £ on his plate!!  :o

I hope that some of those with cameras will have some pix for us in the next few days  ???

Another caller told me AD had his camera but then his computer is not letting him log on!!  ;)

Well said Maggi!  Our Hexham Show, next weekend, is at the sports hall, and they have their own catering staff so on one has to do that duty.  The autumn show, however, is in Ponteland and a small, but it has to be said, happy group of volunteers run the kitchen and even do soup!  Its a lot of work that's for sure and time for these people to take a bow for all they do to make the shows go so well.  Wish I could have gone to Dunblane, but not possible, so I do hope someone took some photos for us.

Jean, daughters and 4 grandchildren worked there fingers to the bone producing food for all the folk at the Show plus an extremely yummy judges lunch, no David & I weren't judging but we had done all the adding up of points etc. and the Seedy wifie decided we should eat too!

I have not seen the benches at Stirling so full in many a year and the number of times that plants were moved before judging began reminded me of Julia's first year as show secretary of the Perth Show when some plants were moved four times!

David and I had a wonderful day, did not get one photo but there were plenty of keen photographers there so I'm sure there will be pix soon.

More news in from Dunblane...... Cyril pretty much won everything!!  Thing is, he is such a nice chap and his plants so good, nobody grudges his level of success!
Forrest Medal plant was a pot of Tecophilaea cycanocrocus var. leichtlinii, I think.
Jim Sutherland  ( of Ardfearn Nursery by Inverness) got a Certificate of merit with a fine pan of the New Zealander, Ranunculus crithmifolius ... no more word as yet about other Certificate of Merit winners...... ???

Mostly Squirrel - damned if I can remember the one other person who got!

RGBE got a Gold Medal for their display of plants as did Sandy Leven for his Srping flowering bulbs. In both cases they were superb exhibits.

Come on you lot with the cameras get the pix posted!

Please can I second the motion for folks to post pics from the Stirling at Dunblane show!
There are many compensations to changing climate when it comes to growing bulbs/alpines etc, but one of the biggest misses is Spring time when one can spend a happy couple of months doing the SRGC / AGS shows. The pleasure of seeing such well grown plants and the excitement of finding something you always wanted fron the members stand or a nursery stand! Ahhhh when I am rich (  ::) )I shall back to the uk for a month and do the circuit...happy dreams.....

Whilst Cyril may have taken most of the silverware, the exhibitor with most points in Section 1 was Watt Russell and Stan da Prato was a very, and I mean very, close second.
If we don't get any pictures soon I can start naming and shaming forumusts who were there with cameras!!!!! ;)

Well, Maggi, I'm sure the food is great, but of course one has to be a judge to make such adjudications..... His butcher's shop is well known in these parts!  Mind you, I got a very, very nice steak pie at the butchers in Dunblane the other week!

Just uploaded 'Google Chrome' and that has solved the problem. Apparently I have been linked into a cache in my computer that links to a time when the website was down for maintenance, that what it's got to do with Apaches I don't know! ::) Will load up some pics.

That was my point, Christine.... there is often a great deal of work being done behind the scenes at a show that may go quite un-noticed but play a huge part in the success of the event ..... I was  taking the example of the Newton Family and Friends catering for the Judges at Hexham as a grand example of wonderful meals being provided without proper kitchen facilities in  very trying circumstances...... all part of show work but rarely seen.

It is lucky that Alan can provide great meat , but  it needs cooking and even the best butcher's shop doesn't sell salads and desserts! ;D ;D

I'm one of the guilty parties who took photos and haven't yet posted them  - but I've just arrived home in the last hour. I'll plead forgiveness with a good excuse - we stayed overnight in Edinburgh to see our duaghter and also celebrate our 28th weding anniversary. The photos will follow later tonight when I've down loaded them, didn't take many only about 80.

Nice to see some of the plants for the 'first' time! With all that was going on I realise I never actually walked round the whole show hall to admire... and study :(

Ok, finally I have some photographs processed. I must begin by saying thanks to Sandy, Jean and the team for putting on a marvellous show, with a wonderful atmosphere - it was good to meet up with people from north of the border again. The light in the show hall was very good, especially in late afternoon with the sun streaming through the windows - I wonder if Sandy could arrange the same weather for next year's show  ::). It was excellent for photography, although the sprung floor presented  it's own challenges when using a tripod!

1 I'll begin with putting the finishing touches to the show hall, note the frantic activity evident in the blurred figures!
2 Trillium rivale 'Purple Heart' - Cyril Lafong (there's a lot of photos of Cyril's plants, they were very good!)
3. Primula 'Broadwell Milkmaid' - Cyril again
4. Ranunculs calandriniodes - Peter Semple
5. Three tecophileas (cyanocrocus, 'Storm Cloud' and leichtlinii) - Cyril L
6. Sandy Leven put on a display of dwarf bulbs - show secretaries shouldn't have time to do such things! I hope no one expects the same from me next week at Hexham.

More to follow later.....

More magnificence! 8) Almost impossible to choose a couple of favourites but the Ranunculus calandrinioides is a very fine plant with well overlapping petals. Many tend to be thin-looking. And I do like the little hybrid narcussus in Anthony's first batch. What a great parent N. cyclamineus is.

7 Iris winogradowii from Ian Christie (the flowers were actualy leaning a bit, need to turn the pot next time Ian!)
8 Narcissus 'Xit' - Anthony Darby
9 Cyril Lafong showed this hybrid seedling raised from Corydalis aitchisonii, I believe the pollen parent is uncertain. The plant is surrounded by a sea of other Corydalis
10 Corydalis solida 'George Baker' - an old favouraite with deep colouring shown by Bob Meaden
11 Corydalis henrickii - Mike Hopkins
12 Corydalis solida - an unnamed form from Cyril in a very delicate pink
Title: Re: Stirling Show in Dunblane 2009
Post by: Peter Maguire on March 22, 2009, 09:47:45 PM
13 Tom Green from our local group in North East England had a superb range of Primulas - here's Primula 'Pink Aire'
14 It was part of a three pan primula entry
15 One of several Muscari on the benches, I liked the delicate blue of this Muscari chalusicum from Cathy and Barry Caudwell
16 Part of Cyril's small 6-pan entry was this Narcissus atlanticus. Unfortunately he came a rare second in this class, beaten by a cheeky border raider  ::)
17 Saxifraga x concinna from the same group
18 Fritillaria aurea, again from Cyril's 6-pan group

It's interesting to see the number of views of the pictures going up as I'm posting. Rest assured, I'm going as fast as I can!
Title: Re: Stirling Show in Dunblane 2009

19 Fritillaria armena, again Cyril's small 6-pan
20 Two of Tom Green's Primula allionii hybrids - Aire Mist in the foreground, Clarence Elliott behind
21 The main area of Primulas
22 Primula marginata 'Miss Fell' - Sam Sutherland
23 Three primulacaeae - John Lee
24 Dionysia aretiodes 'Alan Furness' - a compact, floriferous form shown by Bill Robinson

25 Two cushions in flower - Dionysia aretioides from Cyril, and Saxifraga 'Your Smile' from Tom Green
26 Bob Meaden exhibited this orchid as Pterostylis pedunculata, but I wondered whether the hoods of the flowers should show more of a purple colour for this species
27 Saxifraga 'Coolock Gem' from Cyril, just to show fine saxes can be grown north of the border
28 Rhododendron 'Snow Lady' from Stan da Prato - how these large rhododendrons are transported to the show intact always amazes me
29 There were several Shotia uniflora on display, most of them from Jean Wyllie in various classes. This the best of hers, which I have been promised will be entered at Hexham next week.
30 This Iris graeberiana from Roma Fiddes was silhoutted against the late afternoon sunlight just before finishing time.

31 The RBG Edinburgh staged a fine display, here are some of their plants:
32 Bellevalia pycnantha (you either love this colour or hate it - I thought it was fabulous, but then I'm just weird  ;D )
33 Cordalis integra
34 Another Dionysia aretioides
35 Iris aucheri 'Shooting Star'
36 Narcissus x munozii-garmandiae

I took two pics standing by my car - the first showing people taking plants back to their cars, the second was the view behind with the signal off ready for the train from Dunblane to Edinburgh.

The final batch - I thought that I'd include a few 'people' photos so you can spot the exhibitors/forumists-

37 The show hall late in the afternoon - Susan McBeath in foreground
38 David Shaw, Sandy Leven (a remarkably refreshed loooking show secretary, perhaps he realises it's nearly all over for another year) and Evelynn Stevens
39 Ian Christie and Margaret Taylor
40 Bob Meaden and ?
41 Anthony Darby hiding behind Fritillaria eduardii and F. raddeana (Jean Wyllie's plants)
42 Lastly a close up of the Ranunculus calndrinioides that Lesley liked so much

Well that's it, I'm off to bed. I hope the wait for the photos was worthwhile Maggi.
Apologies for some slightly 'soft' photos, the sprung floor was a real challenge to overcome, you should see what ended up in the recycle bin of the computer.

I was lucky with that one because I was just packing away the camera near the end of the show to go and get a cup of tea when I turned round and saw it backlit against the dark background. It would have been a crime not to take the photo.
