These were intended for a trough which hasn't happened yet but they look pretty in pots as well. Santa brought me Malcolm McGregor's book 'Saxifrages: A Definitive Guide to the 2000Species, Hybrids and Cultivars which fired my enthusiasm and I had to try a few of the easier Porophyllum Hybrids. 'Your Success' and 'Love Me (both x poluanglica); 'Jenkinsae' (x irvingii); 'Gregor Mendel' (x apiculata) and 'Aretiastrum' (x boydii)
-
My first Sax is flowering now outside in a crevice in a trough
-
Lovely things. Could do a major "Moan, Moan..." about availability in NZ at this time. Won't bore you though. HAve one - or several David - for me please.
-
Lesley, a kind chap...... a saxifrage grower of note, has contacted me to tell me of his sympathy for your sax-less situation..... he sends these pix, plus a reminder of the Saxifraga delights to be found in the pages of the Saxifrage Society website and Forum.... www.saxifraga.org is the main page and this link will take you directly to a forum page with super shots of well gown and beautifully presented plants.... http://www.saxifraga.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=107&PN=2 You will recognise many contributors there, I think :)
Here are some shots to ease your distress, Lesley,
with the compliments of David Hoare........

Saxs in David's alpine house
-
THAT'S just, oh, it's, oh....holy cow.
-
Well that's certainly brightened up my day, what an amazing sight :o
-
Maggi and David H, thanks a million and many of them. But as to easing my distress.....I'm not sure. Knowing they are forbidden to me is raising my blood pressure to the nth degree.
Absolutely stunning, superb, happy and glorious. I can see my reflection in the monitor. It's turning green as I type.
What makes me especially angry - after 16 years - is that I imported approx 180 species and hybrids back in 1993, brought them all home with me from various sources in the UK and the Czech Republic, only to have MAF destroy the lot during the inspection process, through sheer bl...y incompetence. Never mind the cost, it was the loss of stock which was and remains, irreparable. Long story and my blood boils every time I think of it, which I'm doing now as a result of seeing these amazing collections.
Don't hesitate to post more pictures though, and I'll look at the given links. Many thanks for those. I'd better join the Sax Society (been meaning to for years) and have access to some seeds.
-
Lovely pics and well nurtured plants.
Here are a couple of mine in the garden now
Sax kathleen Pinsent
Sax Lowndesii x alpigena a minute little plant
Sax your song
-
Great to see some Saxes apearing here and very nice plants too !
That reminds me, I still have some to post in the Harlow AGS show thread - I hope I find the time to do so tonight !
-
Ian, your plants are beautiful, is that a giant bee or are the flowers really, REALLY tiny ???
-
No Helen it's a normal sized bee. The sax may be smaller as they are growing in tufa and will be lean and hungry
-
Impressive!!
What is that plant next to the yellow flowered one with cordate leaves? A cyclamen?
-
Hi Michael
I have a few other plants growing at this end of the alpine house. The yellow plant is Eranthis 'Guinea Gold' and you are right in front is
Cyclamen greacum Album it has a good leaf patern.
Just spent the day getting Saxifrage ready for Loughborough AGS Show on Saturday.
Best Wishes David
-
Welcme to the Forum David, you have an enviable set-up for your Saxes.
-
Well, though there seem to be a fair amount of bad weather and snow around in Scotland, there is nothing on the news, so I assume that England is escaping this bad spell and that there will be no weather barriers to all enjoying a super day out to Loughborough .... have a good day, David, good luck, too!
-
Great stuff David, glad I have nothing entered in the sax.classes.Good luck for Saturday.
-
Are you off to Loughborough as well, John? Sock it to 'em! ;D
-
Hi David,
I was a silent admirer of your Saxes at Harlow on Saturday... :o
How on earth do you get them to flower so profusely ??? Is there a secret ??? :-\
-
Some saxifrages that are flowering in my garden now:
1) Saxifraga kabschia 'Golem'
2) Saxifraga oppositifolia 'Le Bourg d'Oisans'
-
Thank you all for your kind comments. Luc I'am sure it is all down to the weather, we did not have extream tempertures last summer
which helps, but the main factor is the lovely cold winter we have just been through. They always flower better after a good cold spell around December & January.
Just finished getting ready for tomorrow 10 Large pans & 6 Small Sax's +1 Primula & 1 Small cushion.
If you see a Toyota going up the M1 with its lights up in the sky Don't panic, pehaps I should warn air traffic control.
Will try and put some pictures up on Sunday.
Best of luck tomorrow John hope to see you.
David
-
Good hunting David ! ;D
-
Fantastic saxifrages Wim.
Is this oppositifolia always so floriferous?
Göte
-
Thanks Göte.
I have this oppositifolia since two years and last year it was just as floriferous
-
Beautiful Saxes Wim - Where do you grow your oppositifolia ? I can never keep it going for more than 2 or 3 years :-\
-
Luc, that oppositifolia is placed in a trough in full sun (from morning until 4 PM) though I shade it a bit during the warmest months.
-
This is the correct name:
Saxifraga oppositifolia 'Le Bourg d'Oisans'
Actually it's an introduction of Kees Jan van Zwienen and brought into cultivation by myself.
In my opinion the most easy and free flowering oppositifolia, probably due to the very low location of 1200 meter in the Ecrins in France where it is found.
-
Thanks for the correction Ger.
I think I bought it from you two years ago. It's really a stunner.
-
The yellow plant is Eranthis 'Guinea Gold' and you are right in front is Cyclamen greacum Album it has a good leaf patern.
Thanks David!
The pattern is very nice indeed. Looking forward to see the pictures when it flowers!
-
Sorry Maggie,I haven't visited this thread since the show and hadn't seen your comment to sock it to 'em.I did try but was floored by a sucker punch from David with his saxifragas. Were you to see them in reality you too would be floored, they were awsome.Little did I know that David was planning to put them in the six pan or I might have stayed at home.He must have been laughing up his sleeve as he was travelling north up the M1.However,I don't mind coming second to such an outstanding exhibit and it was great to meet David .I will try harder.
-
Well, John, I do think any show is fortunate to have exhibits such as those from yourself and David to grace the benches ....and good healthy competition is good for us all..... raises standards and delights the viewers.
Quite how long many of us will be able to afford to drive around to the shows is in doubt, I suppose, I'm not sure how far one can travel in a day with a donkey cart full of show plants....so your efforts to support the shows are very much appreciated, win or lose!
-
Nothing as spectacular as these (awesome) monsters I saw on the show benches - but here are two Saxes flowering in the garden right now (much better than last year !) :
1) Saxifraga 'Joseph Capek'
2) Saxifraga burseriana 'Major'
-
Impressive Luc. Could you please take a picture of the leaves of the first one? They seem interesting!
-
Will do Michael - will take a couple of days though ;)
-
Thanks Luc. Please take your time! ;D
-
Another one that is in flower now:
Saxifraga lilacina

No spring in sight in southern Germany, but in spite of the nasty weather the Kabschias in
the frame seem to explode. I love these little beauties since the beginning of my rockgardening
hobby, but only a few survive in the open of my hot garden. Therefore I prefer to cultivate them
in the frame in 7x7cm plastic pots with shading during the hot days.
Sax.Joyce Carruthers gave me the bonus of a double flower this year
Sax.x akinfievii, a natural hybrid (dinnikii x juniperifolia) from Central Caucasus
Sax.Louis Armstrong (left) and Sax.Satchmo have the name of this unforgetable and famous star.
-

There was a time when i was growing kabshias. I hope to be able to do it again some time.
One thing I learnt was that a good supply of water at lower levels was very helpful.
I experimented by letting pots stand on a bed of wet sand with capillary connection all the way down to the water table
They would grow very vigorously also in a sunny position. I am today planning to build a small bed - possibly a through - where I can keep the water table at some 15 cm below the surface in the growing season and drain completely during the winter. I am at 59°North so my experience may be atypical but I have noted that plants that in the lowlands grow in shade or semi-shade will grow in fully exposed position in the mountains provided that there is melting snow higher up so that water is abundant.

I think you hit the nail on the head Göte !
I also have experienced that "deep water" can prevent the terrible scorching during Summer.
Very nice collection Rudi - I love the red of Louis Armstrong !

Impressive Luc. Could you please take a picture of the leaves of the first one? They seem interesting!
Hi Michael,
Here's Saxifraga 'Karl Capek' again - picture taken a few days earlier than in the original post so that you can get a better view of the leaves.
Right now, the leaves are invisible - smothered with flowers i ;D
Further down - some more groups of Saxifraga
Next is Saxifraga irvingii 'Gem' growing in Tufa
Last two : S. boydilacina 'Penelope'
-
Luc,
You have a very beautiful collection.

Very nice indeed Luc.

Luc,thank you for your kind comment.
Göte, your advice sounds very interesting, I will try to do so to reduce
my losses. Thank you!

Very nice cumps, my compliments

Saxifraga spathularis, St. Patrick’s Cabbage (Irish Cabáiste an mhadra rua or ‘fox’s cabbage’) belongs to the ‘Atlantic-Mediterranean’ or ‘Lusitanian’ element of the Irish flora. It is locally common in S & W Ireland but also occurs in NW Spain & N Portugal.
Here growing in a typical site on damp acidic rocks, northern slopes of the Derrynasaggart Mountains, NW Cork.

What a lovely thread! Would the last one be Winton Harding's hybrid 'Nancye'? I was browsing my books and it is described favourably in both the new McGregor book and in Winton Harding's own publication (though he very modestly did not not mention there that it was his own product! :))

Just caught up with this thread. Wonderful plants everyone
Here are a couple of mine both tiny. The first Allendale Bonny growing in Tufa and the second S. madrifaria in a small crevice outcrop I put together last year. This plant 18 months old is one of 3 in various spots but is flowering the best of all.

Does anyone know the name of a Saxifrage I got many many years ago (sorry no photo). It is supposed to flower around Christmas time, pure white, the rosettes are quite large and spikey. I got it from Joe Eliiott, it was Sax Marie XXXXX I can't remember what XXXX was and I've never seen it mentioned since.

The Sax Society have a good database,
http://www.saxifraga.org/plants/saxbase/default.asp (http://www.saxifraga.org/plants/saxbase/default.asp)
you can search by part of a term. I put in Marie and got this:
http://www.saxifraga.org/plants/saxbase/searchtaxa.asp?FullName=marie&GenusID=0 (http://www.saxifraga.org/plants/saxbase/searchtaxa.asp?FullName=marie&GenusID=0)

you know, isn't it just one of those things? I remembered! It's Marie Louise and interestingly it's not in the database though I found a reference online to an AGS bulletin which, with luck I have.

Mark, could it be Saxifraga x petraschii 'Maria Luisa' (S. burseriana x S. tombeanensis)? Malcolm McGregor says it flowers mid-winter, he doesn't mention a 'Marie Luise'

Hi Gote,
Saxifragen are in full sun. Early in the morning it is very humid (dew). It is sprayed at evening as needed.

The "Marie Louise" mystery deepens. I found it in the AGS bulletin but with no ifo other than it is white and flowers at Christmas. I thought the description of "Maria Luisa" was it..but look at the picture on the Sax database I'm not sure. My plant has definate 1 inch stems (it's outside and I think it did in a pot too) plus it has often two flowers on a stem. The stems are greenish yellow I think.
In the meantime, I new one bought at the Sax open day "Paul Gaugin" and one from a few years back "Allendale Bounty"

Mark, the only other other information I can find in McGregor is that Maria Louisa has white flowers and grey foliage
-
hi, yes, I found it here http://www.saxifraga.org/plants/saxbase/taxon_image.asp?Image=1073&Taxon=1453 Still doesn't look quite like it. Close but this always has a flower stem and usually two to three flowers per stem.
Also the article by Vic Apsland in the AGS journal does have "Marie Louise". hmmmm

'Maria Luisa' Syn Marie Louise marie Luisa.
Burseriana x marignata A late hybrid by Kellerer.
Very early. May open in December.
There is a complete description and good illustrations in "Horny".
