I have to agree with David, we spent nearly as much time in the collection as we did in the rest of the gardens! ;D
-
I'll probably go..I live about 3-4 miles away. I have a few holes in my saxafrage trough I'd like to fill. I think some even got grazed off by snails/slugs.
I may remember the camera, they have covered tufa beds with the saxes in.
-
We are visiting Waterperry on Tuesday 24 March, we thought it would be less crowded than on the Open Day.
-
Will you be able to get in to see the Saxes? That area is out of bounds usually..
-
Mmmmmmmmm. We were last at Waterperry in July and covered the whole of the Garden including the Sax area although at that time of the year there wasn't a lot to see of the Saxes. I'd just assumed that we would be able to do the same again, perhaps I'd better give them a ring and ask? Thanks for letting me know.
-
maybe you can go in and it's simply not signposted..so let me know also please? I go other times of the year and there are other things in that area of interest.
-
From an Email received from Waterperry this morning:-
"The Saxifrge area is laid out so it is an integral part of the garden for any visitor paying the normal garden entry"
Guess that means I should be able to see it on the 24 March.
-
hi, yes I'm just back from there and I asked. I must have missed the way in to that part, so you may need to ask..I think you get to it just as you complete the garden tour.

Here are a random assortment of pictures from the Open Day, to encourage you to make a visit yourself:

Can someone explain to me what the different Sax forms mean
encrusted
porophyllum
-
last few.
-
Mark,
Visit the Saxifrage Society Website http://www.saxifraga.org/default.asp
and click on 'Plants' it gives a guide to the genus. Better still, join The Saxifrage Society!
-
..... and treat yourself to Malcolm McGregor's book 'Saxifrages'
-
Mark,
Encrusted saxifrages are handsome plants forming spreading cushion of lime-encrusted rosettes.
Saxifraga x engleri and S. Southside Seedling are encrusted saxifrages.
The Porphyrion saxifrages or Kabschias form small cushions of quite hard-leaved rosettes with flowers on stems up to only a few centimetres tall.
Saxifraga Your Success, iranica, scardica etc. are Porphyrion saxifrages.
Look on my website!

Lovely pics Giles and far better than mine would have been if I had remembered my spare batteries ;D
-
Further... Porophyllum is a subsection under Saxifraga Section Porphyrion... though the subsection and term have been embraced and discarded and renewed a few times, seemingly! According to McGregor (who differs from Harding's analysis), Subsection Porophyllum includes Kabschia, Engleria and Tetrameridium.
The encrusted or "silver" saxifrages are in Section Legulatae, in which there are 8 species.

Were all those in little square pots for sale? Mmmm? :P
-
The pots were in the propagation area, Lesley, but there were plants for sale too.
I took the photograph simply because pattern looked nice.

Or even grrrrrr!!! Welcome there Teddy 8)
Maybe it's better if you register on the forum yourself so that we don't mistake you for Lesley ;) ;D
