Never thought Nerines would be able to burst a flower pot, but here is what I found when I fetched them from their winter storage. Time to move them to a larger home :-)

A red nerine, probably what we call Nerine fothergilla 'Major' which is considered a form of Nerine sarniensis

Nerine undulata which has been in flower for several months is finally setting seed. It is in an unheated but frost-free greenhouse, but I have so many seedlings that I am going to plant some out in the garden.

that seems late to be in flower over there - it'll be in flower here next month I think.

Here's Nerine fothergilla 'Major' again.
And Nerine rosea.
Both of these are now considered to be forms of Nerine sarniensis.
I won't be changing my labels!
In our garden these are frost hardy - down to -7oC but the foliage of N. sarniensis gets burned off by frost so it and its hybrids rarely flower without protection,

Part1/2 It has been an exceedingly long Nerine season here in coastal Nova Scotia. Temperatures are stilkl summer like and no frost is in the forecast of the next two weeks. N. bowdenii have been out for three weeks and the N. undulatas started the weekend past A few of Sir Peter Smith's last hand-pollinated crosses from the mid 1990s.

I have been surprised recently what good cut flowers Nerines make. Some N. bowdenii I rescued a few years back give me very long lasting displays indoors; and even more if I bother to keep them in water when they go over, seed pods form and can be grown on.

I agree, nerines make long-lasting cut flowers - however, I've also found they smell dreadful!

Strange. neither of my 2 vases do; fresh or after 2 weeks +. Maybe it is the variety. I will check some others tomorrow.

Interesting. I never noticed it before, or even thought to check, but at close range the odour reminds me of ripe trillium fruits :P

Not all of them - some are absolutely delicious!
I recommend Nerine sarniensis ‘Andromeda’ and Nerine sarniensis 'Chocolate Flavour' - which genuinely smells as the label suggests!

I'm glad to hear they're not all stinky- I 've only ever hd enough N. bowdenii to pick and discover indoors that they smell so bad!
