Title: Ad Hoc plants
Post by: WimB on June 05, 2008, 10:56:31 AM
I saw some people asking about nurseries and I remembered:

I've been trying to place an order by e-mail to ad hoc plants in Lancashire a couple of times this year but I never got an answer; does anyone know if it's still in business?

Thanks

Wim

Can you buy elsewhere? What do you need?

Wim I don't know about Andrew's online activities but we see him regularly at AGS Shows. Unfortunately he has lost the land which he used to have for his plants and the last time I spoke to him he hadn't found another site. He has been unloading all his plants through the season. Sorry I can't help any more.

Use some caution when ordering, I bought and paid for plants from him off eBay last May, but he has yet to mail them, and once the 30-day PayPal refund period expired he stopped responding to emails all together... Also see The Garden Watchdog (http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/5723/) and P.C. Nijssen (http://www.pc-nijssen.com/frameset_warning.php).

In his defence the plants are very nice, if you get them.

Good communication has never been his strong point (one of the penalties of being a 'one man show' I suppose) but I have had plants from him on a few occasions and they have always been good quality and well packed.

Mark, how do you work out that the EBay link is actually Andrew??

Alpinesilverdog is his Ebay name. You will remember I was the first to comment about his nursery and go with what PC Nijssen say.

Wim you now have your answer. Can the forum members supply what you are looking for?

BUT we should slag him because bad word always travells faster than good.

To be fair I could actually see myself ordering again if he'd just respond to emails, the plants are very nice and so is the selection. Ordering the first time around went like a charm, the second time not so much. It shouldn't be a problem as long as you pay thru PayPal and keep in mind the 30-day refund window.

In defence of Andrew im sure he will get back. We have bought off him at his nursey, at shows and mail order, and have had no problem at all.

It's a shame he stopped and he doesn't seem to be very reliable. He had a nice selction of plants;

I had ordered the following plants, so if anybody knows where I can get them I would really appreciate it:

Anemonella thalictroides "Betty Blake"
Celmisia argentea
Dianthus brevicaulis
Epilobium crassum
Fritillaria glauca
Hepatica yamatutai
Iris schachtii
Morisia monanthos 'Fred Hemmingway'

I can send you, I think, Hepatica yamatutai and a piece of Iris schachtii yellow form

Wim, you may not have heard of the Royal Horticulural Society(RHS) Plant Finder, you will find it here

http://www.rhs.org.uk/rhsplantfinder/plantfinder.asp

I looked for Morisia monanthos 'Fred Hemmingway' and it is listed at 9 UK nurseries, 7 of which have mail order available, I did not search for other plants on your list. If a plant is listed in the Pant Finder it does not always mean that a nursery will have it in stock and it is always best to contact them before ordering. I hope this helps, and if you have any difficulty please let me know and I will do the searches on your other plants for you.

Hello David,

thanks for the info but I knew the site: you have one for Belgium and the Netherlands too at:

http://www.kwekerijen.net/

But even there it is not possible to find them all... and ordering just one plant by mail order is very expensive.
But I saw in the RHS plantfinder that Edrom sells Anemonella thalictroïdes "Betty Blake" and since I'm going to order from them anyhow in fall I'll put it on the list.
Also I've ordered some seed of Epilobium crassum at B&T seeds today.
So it would seem I'm only still looking for these four:

Celmisia argentea
Dianthus brevicaulis
Fritillaria glauca
Morisia monanthos 'Fred Hemmingway'

Thanks

Wim

Dear friends
I have tried twice to buy plants from Ad Hoc Plants but never had a reply to my e-mails. His internet site is appealing and for a foreign customer the cost of delivery and the range of plants "available" are very interesting. I was looking for epimediums and daphnes which are rarely offered by mail order nurseries or are charged with high delivery costs.
When I read your messages I understood that to get in contact with this nursery is rather difficult.

I can thoroughly recommend Long Acre Plants.  They supply plants for shade.  The plants were excellent and I have never seen better packaging.

Their website is http://www.plantsforshade.co.uk

I can third that recommendation, great plants and friendly service - and they do ship within the EU, I ordered from them last autumn.

That's a bit confusing but maybe they don't ship plants in spring.

Not to the mainland (EU) They write in their catalogue:

We’ve stopped shipping to mainland EU, just too many problems with plants not arriving in good order.

We’ve stopped shipping to mainland EU, just too many problems with plants not arriving in good order.

That's too bad, the plants I received via Denmark last August were in excellent shape. It must be a recent change, they still list the shipping charges to mainland Europe on their other web page (http://www.longacreplants.co.uk/mailorder.htm):

To all European destinations including Eire and the Channel Islands we will have to quote on each order. As a working estimate it is likely to be around 25% of the order value to most EU countries. Bare rooted bulbs can sometimes be sent by post for less. Contact by email for details seems to work best.

You could try Kevock Garden or Edrom instead, as far as I know they still offer mailorder within the EU. Also, dereuvenkamp.nl has both the Celmisia and the Dianthus.

Thanks everyone  :) ,

I found the Morisia monanthos at the nursery of Cathy Portier (Bruges). I'm going to order the Celmisia and the Dianthus at nursery "De Reuvenkamp". And I'm sure I'll find the Fritillaria glauca somewhere too.

Missed this topic in June otherwise i would have replied sooner. Andrew Lovell (Adhoc owner) told me at the Southport Show in May that he was emigrating to South Africa with his girlfriend this summer.

Most people - white ones anyway - are emigrating FROM South Africa. Droves of them here.

I have friends, Lesley, who left and came back 'home' in the 80's but last year emigrated back there.  They missed it too much!
