Hello,
I would be grateful for your advice as to where to go for Asiatic Primula seed.
Apart from the SRGC and AGS seed exchanges, and The Cluny House list,
are there 'key' places I should be trying?
I am not after any particular species, rather I am aiming for a good range.
Thankyou for your help.
Giles
(any seed donations gratefully received!!!!!)

Giles,
Try some of the czech collectors, not all properly named but a good selection.

Hope all the links work

There's Barnhaven of course, in France.
-
Thankyou, Lesley.
I've tried Barnhaven before (and again this time)
They have a restricted range - but its good quality.
I think I'm going to end up getting the odd packet here and there.
It will 'upset' me if I end up having to buy PLANTS given how short lived they can be!

An obvious source:
http://www.chilternseeds.co.uk/
Slightly less:
http://www.secretseeds.com/acatalog/Primula.html
I'm not qualified to say how good they are.
-
Thankyou David,
There are hundreds of the little beauties to collect, so the more suggestions the better please!

Giles, look on the bright side... if you can buy thrum and pin-eyed plants, then , even if they are short-lived, you will be well equipped to collect and raise seed from them and so assure your continued enjoymant of them 8) ::) :) For the short lived species you will have to constantly renew from seed anyway. :D

Many Forumists will help too, I'm sure. It's a bit late for me now but later in the year (?Christmas) I'll most likely have seed of several such as cockburniana, scotica, yargongensis, flaccida, sikkimensis, vialii, maybe reidii, etc.
-
I'd love it all !!
I'll send you my address
-
If any of you are interested (?), I followed up the earlier Czech sources suggested above, and find that
Mojmir Pavelka at pavelkaalpines.cz replies to emails (always a good start), has alot of primula sp seeds,
and has sent the seeds already, before receiving payment.
If the seeds arrive and grow into what they're meant to be, I'll be a happy man.
Thankyou for your suggestions.

In my search for seed, I found P.maximowiczii from a German seed company - it arrived today.
I have got more than I need, so if any of you would like some ( I've got 3 packets with about 100 seeds in each)
please let me know.
Its ordinary seed company stuff, not wild collected.
Otherwise I'll just stick it in the fridge for the seed exchange this Autumn.

Who are they?
-
Sorry, I wasn't trying to be evasive. It's just that I wasn't too sure about mentioning company names here.
It was from Jelitto. Never ordered anything from them before, but thought it worth a go.
Alot of the primulas they list you can get here from Chiltern Seeds, but they list P.flaccida, P.hirsuta, P.parryi in addition
to the P.maximowiczii (ok so not all are Asian), as well as some under species names which aren't in Richard's book.
I placed an internet order at the weekend, and it arrived this morning. (!)
I was going to sow it, put it the fridge for a while, and then see what happens.........
As I mentioned above I was a bit enthusiastic with the P.max and see that there's quite a bit of seed in each packet
so if you would like some, just say so. I tend to sow stuff as soon as I get it, regardless of season, so thought would
unload my extras asap rather than let it die in the packet.

It was from Jelitto.
Thanks. I'd forgotten about them - 110 different types of primula seed.
-
Do they have an online catalogue? Has someone a link please?
-
http://www.jelitto.com
then follow through:-
English
Products
Perennials
Primula
Botanical species
They sent my seed from Germany, but for you, it may come from their USA office.

Thanks Giles for this link. I can see that the next week or two are going to be very expensive, what with primulas, alpine cacti, Archibald et al. ???
